This report conveniently ignores the fact that Lion Electric is expected to soon file for bankruptcy. These buses will never be fixed. And I would be willing to bet that the school district sold off its gasoline powered buses.

'Never" is kind of a strong word here. Bankruptcy doesn't necessarily mean the assets don't get purchased and continued. GM and Chrysler both went bankrupt but both continue to produce and support cars (that's two out of the Big Three).

Proterra left many cities and towns in the dust, including swanky Jackson, Wyoming. Major companies like Ford and Mercedes are totally re-thinking their commitment to electric vehicles after losing tons of cash. I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for little Lion to rise again.

Norway has a ton of electric vehicles doing fine in the cold. The technology can handle it, this sounds more like a manufacturer specific issue, maybe software involved. Lion is a new start up, if they stay in business long enough they can make it work. Oshkosh is struggling to make those electric postal vans, they should have provided close to 3000 by now, but they have only built about 300. Electric vehicles sound simple to make, but lot of companies struggling to learn something new.

They don't work below 40° and draw huge amounts of power from the batteries. Electric vehicles are not at all simple or cheap to build. The batteries have to be replaced at least every 2 years and that costs in the tens of thousands for a small vehicle. Imagine what it costs for a bus!

There saposed to have a heating element in the battery pack if there having brake issues did they get rid of air brakes I understand hydraboost brakes but air is still king cuz even if it has issues it still works like some of the big rig hybrid or full elec company's are just using off the shelf home depo air compressors since a 120 or 240 volt system already exists or is easy to add

It is how most electric buses run in the nordics in the winter. It is a whole lot less emissions than running on diesel. The heater uses a few liters per hour, a diesel bus would use 30 or more if you are going slow enough.

If that varies, then the system can’t properly run everything and it shuts down, just like when your phone locks up. My 2000 AmTran T444E has been in flawless service 24 years and will be retired in 6 months. The engine, transmission, and axle is still all original and it has never needed a tow. 250,000 miles, 16,000 hours...it can be stubborn to start it when below 25°F, but it is so reliable.

No need to retire that bus at all except government bureaucracy. Be sure it's not replace with an EV.

@1940limited state law. Age 20 retire the school bus from a daily route, but we can use them for up to 25 years as a "spare" bus, but our spare buses are actually daily bx they are more reliable than the newer DPF/DEF buses. No rust here, the 25 year rule is more of safety from things like old brake systems, old wiring that could catch on fire, etc..

Is this the program where a district has to destroy their old diesel bus in order to qualify for an EV bus? If so an EV bus not on the road means the district is down a bus.

Maybe you drive 200+ miles a day, but an average person does not. If you have a garage to charge in it can be very convenient. If you rent and park outside, I wouldn't get one yet.

Electrics Do NOT work in any Northern States or Canada !!! Even in south Arizona and Florida they will never recover their initial cost within 15 years . Often started my diesels in a heated Garage while they had block and battery heaters plugged in while working in Alaska several years. Also, Electrics will never recover their initial cost during their service life .

The biggest challenge to batteries is cold weather, so naturally, one of the most northern states is a no brainer for this tech, as in, only someone without a brain would think was good.

Besides Tesla, every EV manufacturer is still experimenting with being in the EV business. As battery technologies evolve, and while consumer demand fluctuates, smaller EV startups and niche outfitters (Like Lion) will come and go.

One reason why school districts are struggling to hire new drivers is because being a school bus driver is one of the most stressful jobs there is. I suspect that nobody wants to look after a bus full of loud and rowdy children.

Really “cool” should never be a consideration for school’s buses transportation. And EV batteries don’t function well in the cold. It’s a very expensive way to be “cool”. And not environmentally friendly. And doesn’t make sense cost wise. And “reliable for their shorter routes” says not reliable on other routes.

There was a newspaper story here about how our Del Norte county, California school district school bus fleet was half broken down in need of parts & whatever. I have been reading stories about how the FED is giving away electric school buses to any school district that asks. What I dont understand is WHY does my county school district HAVE an old worn out broke down bus fleet? when brand new electrics are avail for the asking? In CALIFORNIA no less. My county is real REAL R E A L red. Does our county think electrics are TOO WOKE? If you buy an EV California will install the charge outlet for you. Whats the problem? !

As a school bus driver myself I can tell you it's not an easy job and pays way less than it ought. It's even dangerous when you think about it. Anything can happen out there. Plus you're always guilty until proven innocent if anything does go wrong.

Poor design. You should not lose brakes in the case of engine failure for example (the driver had to crash to a snowbank to stop the vehicle)

You must not have seen solar and wind farms everywhere, generating electricity on the grid. The percentage of electricity generated by solar/wind/water is small but increasing every year. It'd be an even larger percentage if power companies hadn't restarted coal plants to mean the energy needs of crypto scams.
