All these EV truck tests and races makes this the greatest EV truck series to ever be done and recorded to this point in history. And EV trucks should all have their port on the right front to accommodate pull in charging while towing on V3's and other chargers. Even Tesla fails by not placing their own Cybertruck's port there. We know that pull through stalls will take quite a few years to propagate all throughout the country. And of course, all should be 800v with backwards compatibility with 400v chargers. Either by splitting the pack in two, or a proper on-board DC charger that provides at least 200kw charging on them.
@Nebula1701
@Nebula1701 2 ай бұрын
What everyone is missing is the port location is really dependent on charging equipment location in the truck and the shortest cable run into the battery. It becomes a packaging and efficiency issue with longer runs needing thicker wires.

My primary issues with trucks: 1) they don't make me money. They are a necessity to get the crew to jobs. 2) the crews damage (dent) trucks. They also rust quickly. 3) the cost per mile for a truck that has an acceptable body/looks okay, that's what I need. If I get any of these trucks for my company, the Cybertruck is the only one close. @oof_Dad
@oof_Dad 2 ай бұрын
What do you you think you gain from over 250 kw speed? A few minutes from 0-30%, everything over that is below 250 anyway. Holding 250 kw longer/deeper will increase speed more. 800v is better for cost but cells still limit charge curve.
@tazeat
@tazeat 2 ай бұрын
Uh 350kW is 40% more speed over 250kW putting a lot more area under the curve for that part off the charge? The 4WT doesn't taper until like 35%, that's a whole MY LR battery before it even starts to slow. It doesn't go below 250kW until after 60%. Big boy curve. 250kW@400V=625A, which makes some pretty serious heat loss in just the wiring. It just doesn't make a lot of sense for trucks when you need to put in real energy.
@oof_Dad
@oof_Dad 2 ай бұрын
@@tazeat true, the Silverado is on another level with that huge pack. Didn't realize how long it held 350. 250 is fine for the others but that monster pack has a LOT of curve over 250. Should have watched till that part before commenting 😬.
@Paul-cj1wb
@Paul-cj1wb 2 ай бұрын
Yep. Check out the 2025 Taycan curve. It stays over 300kw past 62% and then above 200kw till 76%. It can do that because 800v keeps everything around the pack so much cooler and it's so much easier to cool the cells. Most people can't understand that no matter how much you explain it to them. For example, the Taycan never went past 130F while the 250kw speed of new Model X (400v) with it's tremendous curve all the way to 31% reached 140F by that time. And the new Model X and S are charging monsters. But 800v simply takes it to another level. That's the future of all EVs, but especially for trucks. No trucks going forward can afford to be 400v.

1:08:58 ABB units were the ones installed with the first-gen HUBER + SUHNER cables that had the faulty thermistors. So the reduction to 100 A occurs when that thermistor doesn't have a good temperature rating. It's possible that even if it is buggy, EA might allow the full 500 A when the thermistor is functioning. Of course, EA should have replaced all those cables by now, but it's really hard to tell where they are in their upgrades.

I know some people prefer the regen configurations from other automakers, but most of that seems to stem from personal preferences and a desire for coasting, which is unnecessary if you have proper blended breaking and cruise control.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if these trucks got about 1.3 miles per kw/hr then that would be about 43 mpgE. Compared to gas pickups towing at 12 mpg, that's a lot more efficient. It will be interesting to see how efficient the upcoming trucks will be that use an electric motor and an ice generator.

The thing that's missing is a standard for getting the trailer's energy into the truck. I suppose they could just have the trailer battery drive the trailer wheels and take that load off the truck. But I'm not sure what kind of challenges that would bring, maybe a lot. I think it's already being done by a couple of companies but haven't heard anything about it lately.

The surge brakes on these uhaul trailers might actually hurt range on the electric trucks because the brakes come on any time the tow vehicle slows whether you want it to or not. They work great and they're super smooth for towing but you don't want friction brakes coming on when you're doing regen only. I would assume that the manufacturers designed these to not apply the electric trailer brakes during regen. There's a solenoid that bypasses the brakes when your tow vehicle reverse lights come on, so there may be a way to trick that into happening on the tow vehicle during regen, but I don't know if the engineers thought of that. I would assume they didn't.

Try to Remember Towing should be done at Safe Speeds and the Driver needs to take responsible Breaks to maintain concentration. If you can get 300 Miles out of a Tow in an EV before needing to charge that should be enough. Batteries will only get better. It's good to have an EV truck designed with longer distances in mind. I suspect, as time goes on, people will think more about whether they need all that battery or not. I guess the question is, if only 10% of truck drivers ever tow, what percent THINK they need a truck that will tow long distances? This will determine the market size for big battery trucks. Of course, part of the consideration will be resale value. Even if I don't need to tow, my truck will hold value better in the long run if it can.

If someone tows occasionally all 4 trucks will do just fine. If someone tows regularly let's say once a month then it is much better the Chevrolet Silverado vs others. If someone tows across the country once in a while it is better to wait for RAM Range extended EV truck. If someone tows daily moderate loads it is better to have right now a Ford F150 HEV or a Toyota Tundra HEV. If someone tows heavy loads daily on very long distance then a Diesel HD truck will do the job for now.

The subconscious assumption here is that to be a real pickup, then you have to be able to tow 1000s of pounds 100s of miles regularly. That's only about 7% of the pickup market. But if you need to tow with an EV, then the Silverado is the beast.

The charging cost is more he went from Denver to Grand junction and back to Denver if you doing it right you recharge the battery at Denver so it's a complete test so it would have cost somewhere around $170 to $200 for $500 and some miles what a joke if you figure a gas pickup would only get 10 mi to a gallon it's around $4.10 a gallon of gas to come out to the same cost as these electric vehicles I don't know what a pickup pulling a trailer gets for gas mileage but I think it's more than 10 mi to a gallon just goes to prove that these electric vehicles are big joke

@@nevco8774 That's the future, yes. But for now we all have to live in what exists in reality. That'll take many, many years to get there on a country as large as America, not to mention Canada. If manufacturer's want to sell vehicle's, they have to move it to one of the correct 2 locations or fall far behind. And even fail in Rivian's case. Like it or not, there are more V3 stalls/dispensers out there than ALL other stalls/dispensers combined. In fact, more than 4 times more than all other Fast DC charging ports. So unless you want to restrict your options to only 25% of the charging options out there without having to carry around an extension that can be lost or stolen, or taking up two spots, you place it on the correct location. Which for towing is ONLY the RIGHT front.

Compare that to a mid-length trailer like 22ft or so hooked up on a weight distributing hitch mount. And then try a pop-up trailer that should change the aerodynamics significantly, Cheers and safe racing ... er, driving.
