US regulations allow but do not require brake lights for regen. Apparently EU regulations require brake lights for strong regen, with some flexibility on the threshold: ≤ 0,7 m/s 2 The signal shall not be generated > 0,7 m/s 2 and ≤ 1,3 m/s 2 The signal may be generated > 1,3 m/s 2 The signal shall be generated Every EV I've ever driven behind has had the feature, including Tesla, Rivian, Volkswagen, Ford, and GM EVs. I think it's a good feature. Perhaps the car you were following never hit the 1.3 threshold?

Similarly the tail lights of vehicles without automatic headlights don’t light up when their daytime running lights do so they drive in the dark unlit …..

I believe that’s dependent on country regulations. I know it’s true in US and Canada, but I believe in Europe that should be an issue.

When i change gears and use engine braking to slow down from 4th to 3rd or 3rd to 2nd obviously no brake lights come on also when cyclists brake there are no brake lights unless they are custom wired in, good observation is all thats needed

Regen braking can slow an EV much faster than what engine braking will do. The amount of regen braking is adjustable. In the highest setting on some EVs it will slow the vehicle down as fast as applying brakes.

petrol vehicles dont show brake lights while engine braking though?

Hihi, You can shift your car in a lower speed and with a little bit of rev match and engibe brake slows down way better than any regen braking does.

I agree with this. All EV vehicles should show brake lights when the vehicle is set to one pedal driving and anytime the vehicle is regenerating heavily.

they do

That's really weird. Literally every EV I've driven has brake lights when regen braking.

in the US there is a dangerous amount of Electric Vehicles that dont have brake lights when breaking because US Law only requires the braking light to be enabled when the "full service brakes" are applied. which are considered disc brakes only. although there a fee cars with the issue being directly correlated to regen breaking a lot of them are caused by indirect regen, such as that upcoming feature in modern vehicles where when you let off the pedal all the way it turns on regen breaking

With my Cupra Born in B mode (brake mode/single pedal driving) it shows the brake lights when regeneration is happening even though I'm not braking or slowing down
@MineCrafterCity8 ай бұрын
This is most annoying on the highway. I'm not sure if it's only electric regen breaking or not but some people break out of seemingly nowhere. I see it a lot and especially at night, it's hard to see how hard someone breaks so in practice other people react to it until you're almost at a full stop.

@ETr4d38 ай бұрын
mine does, but depends on the regen level. If low regen, car does not slow down much and no lights, if at high regen level, car slows down fast and lights are lit.
@TheAegisClaw8 ай бұрын
Mine does, although at what point in the deceleration is not clear. Ive not had any complaints about it. Funny, the same car has had lots of complaints in Australia about the lights not coming on. It must be adjustable by software.

I see your point . However we can go down the road one of two ways ? Lot's of warnings and safety measures, like what you suggest, air bags ,speed bumps, lots of painted lines and signs. Traffic controls flashing light signs ice warnings the list goes on and on ? Or we could go the opposite no stop signs at junctions where all traffic slow right down and edge out very carefully like some experiments have tried . No bike lanes but all traffic get used to each other rather than them and us ? Which is best ? I think we have tried the first option? Maybe we should all implement highway code rule 126 : Drive at a speed that will allow you to stop well within the distance you can see to be clear. How many of us can do that ?

@@paulflory3532 Gotcha, thanks for that, it pretty much confirms what I thought. One thing I just realised since my last post is that from a cyclists POV audio cues are a useful indicator of a driver's intention, i.e if you hear them take their foot off the accelerator you know they're slowing down before they press the brake pedal, I wonder if that was a factor in this video?

Oh wait cyclists on the hole think they get to pick and choose rules. While slating every infraction. Perhaps set your cam at elephant and Castle and tell me the over and under other road users vs cyclists for jumping lights, mounting the pavement, endangering pedestrians. Then tot up points and fines totals…. Oh wait some one did that and cars were 6 points with £300 fines vs cyclists with 863 points 23k in fines.
