If that transformer secondary is carrying 75 amps continuously, it is overloaded. A 30 kVA TX Secondary @ 208 is 83.4 amps [30,000 ÷ 208 ÷ 1.73] You don't want to exceed more than 80% (66 amps) of the full load capacity continuously. That is why you're smelling the hot electrical odor and having the overheating issue. The insulation on the transformers windings is breaking down. They should consider either shedding some of the load if possible or installing a larger transformer if the main switchgear can handle it.
@nics-systems-electric
@nics-systems-electric Жыл бұрын
Exactly that's what I've tried to say the switchgear can definitely handle it as there was a larger transformer that was there temporarily for construction power which was larger

That's awesome! Reminds me of sneaking into electrical rooms back in my school days; unfortunately I wasn't an electrician so I didn't get to deal with any of the equipment haha On your meter that W/VAR/PF menu is showing the school's real power consumption, reactive power consumption, and power factor (if you care about math things, you can make a right triangle with the two shorter sides representing your W and VAR, the cosine of the angle between the W and the hypotenuse of the triangle [your VA] is the power factor). The VA/Hz menu shows the apparent power (if you do the "pythagorean theorem" with reactive power and real power), and the grid frequency. Then you got energy meters below that. Wanna keep that VAR low because that makes the VA larger, and industrial customers have to pay by the VA rather than the watt. (Residential customers pay by the watt only, at least in Saskatchewan)

You're in Canada? as I'm pretty sure 347V is a Canadian thing only. It's 277VAC in the USA (NEC) and Canada (CEC) have some of the same stuff but also some very different stuff as well. For instance the 347 vs 277V. Those transformers are very loud never been allowed in a school electrical room or elevator machine room both of which I was curious about in my high school years. I graduated in 2002 at 17 so things were different in both rooms. They did allow me to work on their school vehicles though the ones that were used as student transport (small private school). Do you have any interest in cars? Also in residential settings the meter base is not allowed inside the house anymore even with the newer digital meters as they want it to be in sight for in the house is an easy target for tampering and theft of service. @6:07 "ASHP1" might be the HVAC as it usually means air source heat pump AKA an AC that can run in reverse cycle to heat instead of cool @8:31 what are those red dials for to the left of the breakers? Sorry I should really watch the whole video before I comment LoL!
@nics-systems-electric
@nics-systems-electric 2 жыл бұрын
Yes I am in Canada and 347/600 V is I think only Canadian or mostly Canadian And yes the ASHP1 is an air source heat pump the red dials are to adjust the trip curve

I think some places in Canada will give you 480V l-l as an industrial service; I've seen some 480V but most of the traditional stuff is 600V

I did not see any roof top equipment on that building. Does that school use a central chiller system for the hvac? It would seem overkill for up north. (Idk where that is but it looks northern.)

What will happen if you bypass the transformer that feeds the emergency lighting panel?
@nics-systems-electric
@nics-systems-electric 5 ай бұрын
That's not possible the feed comes from the transfer switch at 600 V in into a 600 V panel and then feeds to a transformer then into a 120/208 panel
@SassafrasSapling
@SassafrasSapling 5 ай бұрын
@@nics-systems-electric I’m taking about what happens if you feed the 120/280 lighting panel with 347/600 volts
@nics-systems-electric
@nics-systems-electric 5 ай бұрын
@@SassafrasSapling that's not something that's possible but if you were to hypothetically delete the transformer, you would kill likely almost every piece of equipment on the circuit. Some fluorescent ballast might be fine as they are dual voltage rated.
@SassafrasSapling
@SassafrasSapling 5 ай бұрын
@@nics-systems-electric So any 120 volt emergency light that runs off of that panel will fry up on 347 volts as it’s too much voltage for them.

@@SassafrasSaplingmost are fluorescent, so they might be dual voltage rated the only LED corridor/stairwell emergency fixtures are in the addition which may also be dual voltage rated I'm not sure.
