All this "behind the senses" stuff like the generator room, data room, mechanical rooms is so interesting to me! Its just a shame its almost always hidden behind locked doors, I would love to be able to see this stuff in person whenever I go into a large commercial building. What a nice school. Wish mine was like that, I live in Germany and the government doesnt seem to care about children and young adults. Our building was last renovated in the mid 80s, we dont even have a generator. Its quite scary if the power went out in the (moldy) underground classrooms.

Bluepuppetweet Elevators, that is true, the elevator stops (if its moving) and goes to the closest floor at leveling speed, opens its doors, and then turns off to save energy for the backup generator.

Whenever you have a chance could you possibly show the pa system? Depending on how far the phones are for admins at the school they might be in a closet closer to the office for better range from the phones to the panel, but they also cold be in the electrical room or server room or somewhere in the office out in the open.

I could maybe one day it doesn't seem very exciting just a Telecor system not IP based so all the speakers and clocks go back to what looks like a network switch and plugs in with your normal Internet jack however it's just an amplifier there's a few of those around the school and it's only set up for secretaries and the actual PA phone in the office to be able to page to the system

If it were me, the volume knob would have gotten a generous clockwise twist! When I was your age, I was JUST getting into Rush; being a percussionist in marching/concert band, I was - and still am - in awe of Neil Peart's talent and technique. (RIP Neil!) At that time, the only song I knew was "New World Man," due to it being on one of my mom's K-Tel compilation cassettes. I just stumbled across your channel last night, and I really enjoy your videos. It's interesting to see how much fire alarm systems have changed since I first dabbled in them (as a young child in the 80s, I went with my father to several schools over the years, as he was an installer for Simplex and I was his "helper.") Surprising to see these systems use LCD screens, I would have thought they'd have gone full-color (and maybe even touchscreen) by now for ease of readability. You might be surprised at just how simply those old systems worked, each heat detector, smoke head, etc. had a set of NO and NC contacts, every zone was a simple loop of devices wired in series. The systems could be expanded on simply by plugging in an expansion card, much like a PC. Each zone card - not sure if that was the official name - had individual LEDs indicating if that zone were in alarm or trouble and had a miniature toggle switch to silence that zone. (Yeah, I know, caveman technology...) The worst part was going to diagnose a trouble condition and discovering the annunciator did not have any of the zones labeled, and having to hoof it down unfamiliar hallways into additions added to additions added to additions, searching for the issue. (I did enjoy the scenery, as each addition kept its appearance constant with the decade it was built, practically a walk through the history of school architecture.) Oh, look, some roof repair guy cut through wiring - AND 1" GALVANIZED SOLID CONDUIT - running to the heat detectors on the stage! 🤦‍♂GAH! WHY!?

In the data room at 11:09, you have 2 rack mount UPSs on battery sitting on the ground sideways for some reason instead of rack mounted. Anyway, I would think those should be on the critical generator or even life saving transfer switch since they power all those network switches. Network communications are at the top of the list in an emergency situation, in my opinion.

Yeah I'm not sure why they didn't put data on generator power in the addition yet the original section it's not only on a central large UPS but also on generator makes about as much sense as not having the PA system on generator power or any back up power at all

I reckon the UPSes are sitting on the ground because somebody didn’t read a spec sheet. It’s a two post rack which often have a lower weight capacity, and there’s two 2RU units there which add up to probably 70-80kg - it’s entirely possible that they’re too heavy to install in the rack. Otherwise, there’s a chance the UPS units didn’t ship with the two post rail units - either because someone forgot to specify it, or someone ordered “rack mount” UPSes, not realising that some things just can’t go in a two post rack.

I work in telecom electrical, most of our gear is huge and redundant as well so in comes the fun of synchronizing units. It’s nice to see a straight forward and clean install. Sometimes I think the latest generation of electrical workers aren’t as quality conscious as the old school then I see work like this!

@@burningdust I totally agree there is less and less clean work part of that is to do with new code additions that allow for different materials to be used for different situations where they weren't previously allowed some thing I can think of off the top of my head is they now allow BX/armored cable to be strapped/supported with zap straps which has encouraged lots of not so pretty work

11:37 Recently-installed hydraulics should return to the lowest level under gravity, and open their doors on battery power. The mainline disconnect has a set of extra contacts to tell if you've opened the disconnect; or if there's a power failure.

Why does the UPS have a phone on top of it? Also, I think the elevators are programmed to go into fire service mode to make sure no one is trapped. They are also programmed to do that if it detects a malfunction. The elevator in my high school back in the 90s went into that mode because something was wrong with the one in the freshman/sophomore building because something was wrong with it. Schindler had to come in and fix it

Normally elevators have a battery backup in case someone is in the elevator and the power goes out the elevator will automatically go to the nearest floor and open its doors and I’m first lol

You still need emergency lighting whether the building has natural light in the day or not there is not natural light in all areas of the building including the theatre and shops and washrooms etc. and if the power goes out at night then it would be total darkness and the generator is also there to run other life safety equipment not just lighting

Glad to see a proper disconnect switch with a whole building generator system. That way the school isn't backfeeding to the grid creating a potential hazard for utility crews. I would however like to see you using 32 dB ear plugs anytime you're in a generator room. As a matter of fact in a business setting hearing protection is required by OSHA in those rooms. Generators are very loud and can easily cause hearing damage.

The switches you were referring to are known as ATS's automatic transfer switch which are part of any real generator install there are also manual versions for manual generator set ups. As for hearing protection it is something that is good if you were to spend a long time around the equipment however we have our own rules here as OSHA is not in Canada so for the short exposure time of only a couple minutes it is not a concern.

Just the door to the room nothing else it's a concrete ceiling above and the electrical room is above it and above that is an outdoor rooftop space and to the side of it is metal shop on one side and gymnasium on the other so it's in a more noisy part of the building you can't hear it from any of the academic spaces

And they do sh*t like messing up the PBX and then there is like an IP phone that cannot make calls to cell phones but it can make calls to landline, or in the computers "lab" (you know, where they teach you how to open the freaking start menu on your computer), there are like, ethernet jacks on the wall, but they are literally ancient, they must have been installed before 2010, and you wiggle the ethernet with your feet by accident, and boom, internet's gone on your pc. And then the teacher comes, and tries to wiggle it back to where it was working lol. I don't understand how they have that awful speeds though. I mean, here at my house we get 200 down and 20 up with that ISP my school uses too (cosmote). I just wish I could do something about all of this, but I am just a student so the only thing i can do is watch the chaos. P.S. : Just realized how long the comment is. I just wrote a dang book lol.

If I am correct the elevator should stop and open the door, but if the car is in the middle of a floor, it should drop down automatically. I had, this happen when I was in college in the summer of 2013, after a storm came through! since, the door motor uses a small amt. of power this is a good thing! but, not all elevators are the same! as well as electrical settings and setup per each building/place!

Now that you showed that elevator in the addition where it had the doors open like that. It reminded me of when my friend that works at a local hospital and he said that they used to have wireless access points in the stairways, but then the fire marshal saw that and said zero penetration, because of where the cable cat5e or cat6 cable was being routed which I think is bullsh*t you can seal the hole up after you get the cable in place.

This is done at Scott Amundsen Base in Antarctica. The difference is that at Scott Amundsen base the generators are the primary power source.

There is large commercial kitchen as well as a home education classroom with kitchens in it. However there is no point of putting them on back up power as it would be a large non-life safety load which would be pointless without natural gas

Usually, the Red Cross or whatever Canada's equivalent would supply the food. When we had to evacuate to the North Myrtle Beach High School in 1998 due to Hurricane Bonnie, they provided sandwiches, chips, and drinks for us.

@15:40 "this time the generator have fuel" that is why there is a move from diesel to natural gas for genset. No more fuel to take care of. Fuel never goes bad, no refuling. Nat gas never goes out. But the engine don't last as long. But it is also more environementally friendly.

Natural gas would definitely be the way to go if it was just a standby generator for convenience however it would not be legal in this situation as the generator is needed for this building as the building is a designated community shelter should there be any emergency or natural disaster where people are forced out of their homes which could likely be from a seismic event which will shut down natural gas that is why the generator Hass to be diesel so it can run after an earthquake

I have to wonder what the architects were thinking when they designed this building as a high school. There are a lot of balconies and sharp edges and now you fill the building with teenagers who are going to throw each other over the balconies and crack their heads open on the sharp edges. I would assume its one of those self reading amr smart meters that transmit data to the hydro co. If i were there i could teach you about the boilers and air handlers, and chillers. So I'm curious why the decision to use Diesel for the generator instead of hooking it up to natural gas so the issue of running out of fuel and loosing the generator wouldn't be a thing since as long as the gas lines aren't damaged the generator would basically have infinite fuel and runtime

It's a good question and the reason is the building is designed to be a emergency shelter for the community and any disaster emergency. We live in an area susceptible to large earthquakes and natural gas would shut down with any significant seismic movement so it needs to be powered from diesel stored on site in order to be able to operate in a disaster

It is on generator that's why it says power with a green light beside it at the top and yes there are monitor modules in the generator room to monitor the generator if it's running or low fuel or any trouble condition

Looks like the elevator is not deemed as essential so it has no connection to the generator or it might have a connection to it but it will automatically stop at the nearest floor and open it’s doors before shutting down if the generator starts.

@@nics-systems-electric Yup it actually just seems to have it’s own UPS unit which would mainly just power the lights in the elevator. However it seems to also automatically open the doors once it’s on a floor while it would probably only open the hydraulic valve to make the elevator sink to the lowest floor if it was in motion at the time of the outage.

That's true not all need it. all of our high schools in my school district are the community emergency shelters in the case of a disaster where peoples homes may not have power or inhabitable for some reason or may be destroyed so the schools are designed to be able to be occupied after a disaster

Good to see that shop classes are still offered. Here in the US, shop was stopped back in about the early 70's and is a VERY bad mistake!

Are you serious? There's no way that's all schools if so that's crazy! I know here they are starting to pull shop out of the middle schools which lots of people think is ridiculous including me after how much money has been spent on equipment and dust collection etc. I think the middle schools should have it to as well as the high schools it's only the high schools that offer metal shop though but I think they should still at least offer Wood in the Middle schools
