Electrical tape and a barrel weight for improved 22LR accuracy? | Ruger American Rimfire

Try a hose clamp, automotive style and a piece of plastic tubing split to protect the barrel. You can clamp it on the barrel and move it back a forward if needed to change the harmonics.

I had to recrown my barrel of my RAR standard length. It improved accuracy better than anything. I will try the tape to unfloat the barrel. I make targets similar to yours. And I have been playing with adding weight to my springer pellet rifles in the stock and on the barrel.

You may try adjusting the forward action screw with an inch-pound torque tool, playing with different settings might reduce group size. Increments torque tools are better.

Did you have this problem before the blue stock? check the tip of the barrel to see if it's damage. Try even more ammo, some ruger barrel get better the more you shoot [500] rounds. Check barrel tightness to receiver even Check tightness on rail and tightness on scope

Try the same rounds & loosen the stock screws , torque the screws to 7&1/2 inch pads , shoot ,10in pads shoot & go up 5 at a time to 35 & see what the best is . We did this with a savage & went from 1&3/4" groups to 3/8" groups at 50

It's highly possible that the way you are holding the rifle is a factor. In the video you are wrapping your thumb around the stock. You can see the muscles in your hand flexing with in turn is moving the rifle. Since it's only a 22lr it's not going to jump off the bench so try laying your thumb on the right side of the stock. Just an idea from a fellow shooter 😉

You want it closer to the end of the barrel. Same as the limbsaver device start about inch and a half back and move until desired outcome.

I know I'm a little behind on your video but was your scope mount and scope rings good and tight because I got one of those rifles with the junkstock on it and at 40 yards I can shoot bullet hole for Bullet Hole with Remington hollow point bullets

One other thing..., pull a bullet from a case, drive it down the barrel and mic it for its diameter (lands-to-lands). Manufacturer bore tolerance on .22LR can vary from .220 to .223. Then omitt any ammo brand that doesn't mic to AT LEAST match bores O.D.. The better the bullet seals the bore (larger O.D.) the more consistent accuracy tends to be. STANDARD velocity ammo is what competitors use also. Even try sub-sonic ammo. Some rifles are sensitive to "trans-sonic transition". After that headspacing for "jump" can /may improve grouping. It all depends on what you're attempting to achieve.....

I tried weight on my Cz 457 MTR - the LimbSaver rubber weight. I tested it at ten different 1/2” increments on the barrel. 5 shot groups compared to the average of 3 five shot groups without the weight. 100 yards using Lapua Midas+ ($17 per 50) shot using a bench rest support. Baseline accuracy was 1.07 MOA. Best group with the weight was 1.02 MOA - essentially the same. It got as bad as 1.88 MOA. The device cost $11 and the ammo to test it cost $22. Conclusion: snake oil.

Half inch increments😂😂😂, I would suggest you re-try something or anything with at MOST .010 movements. Study more into harmonics and you will better understand how this works but you were on the right track but the tracks are way too wide.

@@stephenembrey883 I now have a custom Turbo benchrest rifle with a tuner. I’ve found that 0.001” makes a difference. There is no way that I could adjust the LimbSaver with that kind of precision. I still think it is a waste of $11. Better to buy a $200 tuner.

OK, I see you struggling and I feel for you man! There are 2 schools of barrel tuning. 1 is the PRX school that works on harmonics and the length of the tuner/barrel combo. 2 is the Bill Calfee school

What does the tape do? Seems like with would remove any free float, which would not generally be good.

It is known as pressure bedding the barrel. I have a custom target rifle made off a Winchester 52 action put together in 1950 that has a trick pressure bedding system on the stock, that was the hot ticket back in the day. For the most part, on these small factor actions they just don't have the mass to free float the barrel and do well; a tuner might help, but it won't completely solve the problem. On these small actions it is best to just bed the action and the barrel all the way down the stock and call it good. At the end of the day, these are just rifles off the shelf - they can be improved upon, but they will never be a full blown target rifle.

Picked up a Ruger 10/22 American W/22” barrel when first came out years ago thinking they must be an improvement from the accurate Orig.10/22 mine wasn’t after many rounds traded it off.Then built my own W/after market KSA 20” $120.00 Fluted Bull Barrel and getting dead nut accuracy @50 yrds. Been 6 yrs still tac driver With multiple stocks have Vids to prove results was not impressed with the Fac Ruger American for total Accuracy. My 2 cents ✌🏻🎯

I don't have the highest standards, but if a .22 can't put 10 shots into 1 inch at 50 yards with even one kind of bulk ammo, it is not accurate and i am disappointed. Esp bolt actions. Then it's time to move it along. Thanks for sharing your journey though. I have had guns that just wouldn't shoot too.

If you want a bit of weight up front & You don't have threads, go on E-Bay & order a muzzle brake of some type for that rifle. They come in steel & aluminum. Sometime these help with a bit of weight up front to rid of vibrations. I would not be happy with that rifle the way you have it shooting even with cheap ammo.

IMHO and this is after doing all I could come up with over the year’s to make my 10/22 target bull barrel shoot the groups it should was to realize a flaw in the Ruger design. First, the barrel was a target barrel, not match. Second, being a free floated barrel with one action screw just didn’t work, any heat from shooting changed it minutely and that’s why the electrical tape helped, the harmonics I have no idea, I think there’s something to it but I didn’t get that far. The reason I’m pretty sure I’m right is that I sold the target and bought the Ruger

Sorry, pushed the send button too soon. I bought the Ruger 10/22 from the Custom Shop, biggest improvements were two action screws and a match barrel, better bolt, trigger, etc. Right out of the box it shot 3/4” groups at 50yds and got better as I figured out what ammo it liked. My first time at a KRL event it cleared it using Federal AutoMatch which it likes very well. The engineers at Ruger got it right this time. I have the Bergara B14r in order right now but I’ll be surprised if it outshoots the Ruger.

For one, the Limbsaver shows more positive results on Sporter weight barrels of .22 rimfires. Shaft (or hub) collars achieve the same as tuners on bull barrels just not as quickly because you need to use calipers to move its location in .001" increments after zeroing in with 1/8" movements. $10 vs $200 for barrels that can accept them.

You need to mention RANGE more clearly where these groups are fired from. Early on you show 0:45 - 1:18 .....but don't mention range. I will assume 100 yds based on these numbers. However, around 7:09 to 7:15 you quickly say 50 yds. WOW...if this is true then the first group shown is simply awful. My standard Savage MKII FV ( but with lamp-rod pillars installed) does 3/8"- 1/2" with Wolf MT at 50 yds...as would most other 22's. Something else needs to be checked with your gun if these were shot at 50 yds.

Kids need to go thru learning..Barrel harmonics is real BUT NOT ON 22 rimfire... What matters is quality of lot is AND VELOCITY.. Standard vel around 750 fps to 1150 fps 40 gr tip...Barrel length slowing velocity to 1150 est is better than any harmonics With a 22..Stabilizing bullet is key,,assuming action is screwed in with proper moderate to hard tightness..
