Having the wrong ip rating for the machine can cause a contact weld as well. For example Working in dusty and wet conditions and your contactors only have an IP of 20. After 5 years they will start welding themselves shut.

Is it possible a main contactor not working when in reverse polarity?

No. AC coil can work in both direction

Check the coil supply. Something is there which energizes the coil. Rectify it. Otherwise there is no other way to turn it on
