Good video Mark, I had a new circuit added and chased the builder for a EIC for that notifiable work, an electrician popped in for 20min and 2-days later I received an EICR from him, 20min EICR and full of errors, limitations but was deemed Satisfactory.......🙈

A common scenario and its scary what the results can be.

My Mrs came home from her sister's today, making a point that a friend of hers in a rented property had their electrics checked with no messing about. Apparently the guy was in and out in about 10 mins... all done! She told me this as if it's a good thing, hinting towards my far slower (and more comprehensive) approach. So I opened up GN3 and asked her what massive chunk of work the guy doing the testing must have skipped. The conversation is ongoing and my blood boileth over!

Another good topic Mark. I've just put our house on the market and despite being an electrical engineer, I'm not member of an approved contractor scheme as required for domestic work and having followed yours, Adam the apprentice and bundy batman etc I decided to get the consumer unit changed to a steel one (saving a less scrupulous third party doing the 'it's a plastic dis board, it needs a rewire' line) plus an EICR so anyone looking at purchasing the property to rent out would know they weren't buying problems. I used a local guy I know and trust, for the board change, EICR and a couple of minor works (I just gave him a budget and said if there are issues under £x crack on, saves putting things back together to dismantle ans fix later) him and one of his staff took a solid day then a couple of hours on a later day to finish.

Great video Mark, their is alot going on in this area of the industry and its nice to see you put another spin on the subject that's different to what is out there currently and very informative. 👌

Bang on mate👍sad to say I have been redoing EICR ‘s under PRS as property’s been inspected for 10mins and then satisfactory report issued by dodgy approved contractor. Absolute shocking findings !

Not the only one to be saying that. Trying in my small way to raise awareness of whats going on.

Great video Mark, got very relaxed at the presentation now. One issue I feel is the periodic testing of RCD/RCBO's they are widespread now. As we can have a near enough commercial D.B. full as spec'd and as the consumer unit as shown Makes you wonder how many are going to stick when they need to trip.

Came across you from Monday Club, nice video; I’m not an electrician just enjoy the content. One comment, look at the camera rather than the screen, it is difficult to watch and get full engagement when you are looking off to the side all the time. Other than that I am a new subscriber 👍

Going through some of your videos that I've not sen yet (not many left now) and was brought back to this one because of a proposal I was offered this week to do some subby work doing EICRS for a reasonable sized firm. The minute they said they are looking for between 4-6 PER DAY depending on traffic/proximity I politely declined. That and the fact that it was implied that unsatisfactories were clearly preferred to gt the remedial contracts it was definitely something I didn't want involved with.

Great video and no one can do a eicr in a hour it takes 4/5 hours ( done properly ). And sometimes longer , and it is about time this law was brought in as many landlords have had it to easy with there mates , handymen doing there work , ( on the cheap) but honesty is the best policy and I have customers for over 30 years . And I have allways took pride in my work..

Quick question on that Mark. The test at the start of the video - would the "leakage current" on the "earth" be picked up during the dead tests later on if you did not do it at the beginning? Thanks for another informative video (for a year one noob).
@electrician2473 жыл бұрын
Hi, the test is looking for diverted neutral current in the DNO network. The IET video linked explains it better than I could. I will link it in the description now as well or search IET SPEN on KZbin. thanks

Very informative Thks! A property with an existing tenant of 2years with test cert. with 2years remaining, does that need this new certificate?

The drive by copy and paste EICRs are everywhere,i dont get many as i charge full price and take my time,i also dont fail a property if it has no rcd protection as it was up to reg when fitted.il always advise one for customer safety,even more so if it is a rental.

@Mark Sesum so every time a new edition comes out all homes in the uk then have to be changed to meet it? Seems ridiculous to me.
@andytap5603 жыл бұрын
@Mark Sesum you are saying in your post that if we dont change older installs to current safety standards then we are not covered,does that include afdd’s and metal consumer units if thats the case,metal clips instead of plastic Or just rcd’s.all im saying is not all houses will meet the best safety standards to the latest regs.
@dannyboisparky3 жыл бұрын
Realistically most installations below 16th edition will occur some C2s regarding RCD protection. All socket outlets on the ground floor should have RCD protection as they’re likely to supply outside use and lighting circuits that supply a bathroom should have RCD protection unless supplementary bonding is in place. The whole regs aren’t retrospective and was installed correctly at the time shouldn’t be taken as gospel. Of course we wouldn’t give a C2 for a plastic 17th edition consumer unit because it doesn’t meet current 18th (unless signs of thermal damage located under wooden stairs or sole route of escape). Would you pass a wooden backed, rewireable fuses consumer unit with undersized main earth/bonds etc just because it was installed correctly at the time? Stick with a minimum of 16th edition and you won’t go far wrong regarding coding, remember it’s nearly 30 years ago it came out.

I don’t do eicrs as they bore the hell out of me and can’t stand people’s shite in the way everywhere and try to avoid writing up certificates as much as possible. But when I have done them i struggle to do them in a day if doing 100% visual and test.
@electrician2473 жыл бұрын
Thats a common opinion mate 100%. Personally I love them. Especially commercial

I've only glanced through the .Gov website but one thing that jumped out, was that the requirements for the inspector says that they should be "competent" and "qualified". Does this mean that they don't have to be a member of a certification body; NICEIC, NAPIT, etc?
@electrician2473 жыл бұрын
No obligation to be a member of any CPS. Properly trained and qualified with appropriate insurance and experience. Registration with a CPS does not unfortunately guarantee quality but its a decent starting point for me. Likewise someone who isn't in a CPS isnt necessarily a rouge contractor. Got to do due diligence to discharge duties as a duty holder and select the right person.

I am working to try to correct this bad situation, and am collecting evidence of bad EICRs. I would greatly appreciate more evidence, photos, incorrect measurements etc to present to the wiring regulations committees. Please visit TheIET.org wiring regulations forum and put a post saying you have useful information. I will contact you from there. Thanks very much. David CEng etc.
