So what we are saying is the network providers who receive millions per week in standing charges , who don’t conduct any periodic testing until a failure happens, who get waspy about what goes in your meter box, who have in part a decrepit network in many areas now expect us Electrical contractors to watch out for the problem and dangers they are responsible for. Oh right

I used to work with a guy years ago . On any new installation he would never use the PME terminal. He would always install an earth spike and additional RCD . In his opinion it was much safer that way .
@grahamheath99573 сағат бұрын
I really don’t understand why we don’t also put in a back-up earth spike for all installs to avoid PEN fault related issues. I just don’t see why that would have any negative consequences fro end users or the DNO

It's weird to me that a country that has implemented TN-C-S to some degree for a long time now needs to issue special warnings and guides to electricians about how to work with it. Is something lacking in training? I think we've all seen that clip where a UK electrician interrupted earthing without so much as a whiff of checking current flow before doing so.

Why is it that the consumer has to pay the price to put the DNO right? SPDs etc, using aluminium overhead cables within 25 miles of the sea ( we live on an island?)is not supposed to happen, no wonder pen conductors are corroding, premature collapse regs when you get The low voltage boys (failed mains sparkys) doing whatever they like. Courses to fit fans when it is still allowed by the DIY merchants. Thank God I retire very soon! At least with no winter fuel allowance I can burn the hundreds of pounds worth of regs books etc I own for warmth!

Such a brilliant idea to bond on the installation (consumer) side of a gas meter full of explosive gas that could potentially have large diverted neutral currents flow through it in the event of an open PEN fault.
@olly76735 минут бұрын
It would not surprise me to hear the next amendment introducing the requirement to install a PEN Fault Detection device either alongside an old CU or as part of a CU change, as the amount of incidences increases and the issues brought more into mainstream media outlets. Manufacturers who are early adopters to miniaturise them to go in a spare way or two will do well.

We had our own PEN fault on the 1st of October. Was unsure initially what was wrong when we had a flickering supply, a high Ze result (with parallel paths connected) led me to alert UKPN but I didn’t continue with further testing (as I had work to go to) to discover what actually was going on

I know PME is very much country wide, but, as it is proving to be so unreliable, why can't they mix PME with bonded TT.?? That way if the Neutral went down, the system would still be protected to some degree with an Earth Spike.! If every property had an Earth Spike back to the transformer more breakers would trip in the properties... Saving lives and unwanted shocks. I have TT here and would not be without it. Someone be brave and tell me why we can't bond the Neutral to a spike.!?? Bearing in mind, I have done loads of work on camping sites.....
@andyb78132 сағат бұрын
That was my question too
@G1ZQCArtwork2 сағат бұрын
@@andyb7813 To be honest, as a PEN fault is so dangerous, I would have thought by now, it would be Mandatory to back up the system with TT Earth Spikes as a matter of good practice and for much better safety. All Camping sites, Marinas and I think most rural Farm outbuildings are all TT for that very reason. Some older properties do not have any form of RCD in place, so an Earth Neutral fault in the property would never show up unless specifically looked for during "inspections" which are hardly ever carried out in some places.

cant undrestand why not installing , earth rod in addition to PEn, why does it have to be a single arrangement TN or tncs.. , i suggest TNCS-TT , thats it

I hope the guys who invented the electricians diary got written permission from the IET to use their charts as the IET owns the copyright of those charts.

Clearly will be another addition in regs to add an additional rod on all tncs installs.

I wonder is it time that Electrical work is diversified so that you have specific electrical sub jobs for example Electrician - Solar/Battery, Electrician - Mobile generation etc etc.. So you get your electrical qualification then you can specialise in certain areas and become a certain type of electrician..
@efixx2 сағат бұрын
Could be.... 😬

Electrical work itself is not complicated. It's the damned regulations that's complicated.

Adding an earth rod to TNCS systems is already in the regs btw, seems no one knows this?
@retrozmachine118953 минут бұрын
It's not mandatory though? It's another odd thing really, other countries with TN-C-S type systems have had mandatory dedicated electrodes for decades yet over there it's still only recently become recommended.
