John Glenn was not the first American in space, that was Alan Shepard. Glenn was the first American to orbit the Earth.

Back in the day, I built & still have the Revell Boeing SST model consisting of 2 planes, one in streamlined super sonic mode, the other with wings out, gear down, and nose drooping ready to land.

A SST on its last landing here at boeing field close to twenty years ago flew over ny home near the landing strip and i saw it and heard it come in for the landing.

In regards to the Boeing SST, someone involved in the project summarized it perfectly with the words "We can carry the passengers or we can carry the hinges". Placing a swing wing in a passenger aircraft was always going to come at the cost of a huge compromise. Concorde barely survived as it was. We can only imagine how much more expensive tickets would've been if in addition to the passengers and luggage it had to carry massive hinges as well.

A big miss, it should have been updated and improved. If this plane was American, it would be still.flying today I'm sure. A wonderful jet, and still the best looking plane around today.

Ironically, the UK and France argued about how to spell "Concorde."

I still think the biggest problem was that the engine technology was not yet mature enough, especially since the Olympus 593 engine on the Concorde and the RD-36 on the Tu-144 had to run in fuel-consuming full afterburner mode to maintain Mach 2 speed. The planned Boom Overture will use a modern turbofan engine that will be very quiet on takeoff and thanks to its much more modern design, could run in afterburner mode at Mach 2 with way less fuel consumption.

“I think the 747 will be flying for the next 20 years”…. What year was this made? 😂 Im still flying the 747 in 2025 and probably will for the next 20 years of my career! 👨✈️✈️

Yes, I was involved with the 2707, Mach 2.7 cruise Its productivity was higher than any other airliner in terms of pax transported per year. The other was the not chosen Lokheed SST. Back to Boeing 2707 : It was a very safe airliner , tripple redundant control surfaces, the initial swing wing was replaced with a delta shaped wing, considered safer, much safer. Political maneuvering by Wiskonsin senator Proxmire killed the program, citing sonic booms and other non realistic effects for the people on the ground. After a while it was restarted but too late, layed off Boeing engineers busy on other projects Sutter : you can't turn on and off a project like a spigot, so the 747 was pursued instead, which was not supported by the unpredictable Government and midgets like Proxmire.

Their was only one winner Concorde the SST grew to big and aspersions exceeded technical ability and the 144 was a disaster and relied on copying Concorde that’s why it only had about 2o passenger flights and was relegated to cargo

Historians have no knowledge, what the actual temperatures at cruising ALTITUDE are Mach 2.7 at the cruising altitude of 11 km and above are well within metall skin temperatures not requiring titanium Ts = Tambient( 1+0.2 Mach²) Mach = 2.7 T ambient = 15 C - 6.5 deg per 1000 m altitude T ambient at SL in Kelvin = 288 K Do the math yourself.

Besides there is no SOUND BARRIER, the transition from subsonic flight to supersonic flight is NOT perceiveable to the pilot, only the Mach indicator tells the pilot that he passed Mach one. This talk about turbulence is sheer nonsense, You are neighter a pilot nor an aerodynamicist, please correct this common missunderstanding: No sonic Barrier No shaking at Mach 1

If you are talking about American planes or what have you.. please use proper measurements like mph, feet, inches and miles..

Metric measurements are real numbers. Feel free to translate and don’t expect others to do it for you. The only successful passenger jet was the Concorde. Boeing never went any further with this other than building a model plane. The Concorde itself was nothing more than a millionaires club plane. In 1976 dollars it was $10,000 for a ticket to fly from New York to London. Not a money maker.

Wait until you find out that planes use the same speed measurement as boats
@ironenthusiast11 күн бұрын
Most of the world doesn't use our ridiculous, antiquated Imperial units of measurement. Even here, in what's left of the USA, science uses the metric system. It's far superior and elegant. It's why the world uses it.

It's amusing when people think they can tell others how to do creative works and expect to be taken serioysly.
