One of my favorite airplanes… The Boeing 707… I was fortunate enough to fly one for a few miles… my Great Grandfather had one but it was not like the airliners… it had a complete bar, bedroom, super nice bathrooms, a common seating area and a conference room… he used it for work and to transport dignitaries around the world… the Shah of Iran to the U.S. and he played tennis with my Uncle in Texas… it had a red shag carpet at one time… I had a blast as a kid flying on that plane

Despite major advances in materials (composites in addition to aluminum alloys), avionics (digital glass cockpits), flight control (fly by wire) and engine technology (turbofans and electronic engine controls) since the 707, the basic design of modern commerical airliners retains the shape set by the 707. A fuselage with an oval tube cross-section, a swept wing with engines hung in pods below the wing. Those has not changed to this day...well until flying wings enter commerical service.

I think you could say the comet was the first stepping stone to jet airliners not the usa. That changed the world but whatever!!

The British Rolls-Royce Conway engines when fitted to the VC10 was the fastest bird to cross the pond except for Concorde The VC10 made for the Empire routes has all four engines at the rear of the body and was able to have short legged wheels 4 rough Fields landing & And was able to take off and land within the half the distance of the B707 Fitted with GE JT 8 D Jet engines The Vickers VC10 was used a lot on the Atlantic route and it's upgrades were unnecessary and expensive for this simple route and did not sell as hoped, I am not sure whether planes of today have close to the VC10 ability also turned into an in-flight refeuler & the Handley page Victor Britain's ex V Bomber I am glasses I couldn't fly through my career, never mind I enjoyed this video thank you and the barrel roll

Sorry to disapoint but the convair 990 was the fastest subsonic jet never built, Convair 990 621 mph, VC10 580mph

@christoohunders5316 I am aware of the engines in the Convair it had 4 x GE J 79 Same as the F4 Phantom and the Starfighter Without reheat But I hear it was unable to do the USA's coast to coast they put more fuel tanks off the trailing edge of the Wings, & the B747 in a flutter test achieved Mach .98 The B737 was .83 Mach The Vickers VC10 was also made hot and high density altitude

@christoohunders5316 KZbin talk about MPH That is ground speed independent with a headwind tailwind a B777 did a ground speed of 821 mph not so long ago obviously with a tailwind

@@christoohunders5316 the Rolls-Royce Conway jet engine and Vickers VC10 were made to be superior performance ability Alas today with an engine that has 12 to 1 bypass ratio although technologically they have very high efficiency 4 distance this is a good thing With the loss of speed and power the airlines save money and hopefully pass that on in an hour ticket price The Handley page Victor a cold war V bomber used the RR Conway engines until it's retirement it made a good in flight refueler The Convair passenger jet Having J-79 engines was of interest to me I am very aware of these engines a plane with a similar heart to the VC10 but it was the Douglas DC-8 the only passenger jet to go supersonic a jet cannot breathe supersonic air but it still did it, L8TERS fella

I guess it's the video quality or something but the red one shown at the beginning, doesn't it look really dirty as they roll it out?
