For some buyers, for others they specifically choose one or the other.

@@michaelnurse9089maybe for a few - but most buy a cheap car because they need a car. Some might buy a new car - have it for 5 year - and sell it - because they want a no-issue and a new thing. But if a 3 old car with better quality (than a new cheap car) is cheaper/bigger/better - then the new cheap market is tiny. This is a logical result of mass leasing.

My Kia is about to hit 400k miles. Been paid off for 10 years. Worth probably $500 10 years ago. Today $600 bucks. 32 mpg. All components replaced have lifetime warranty with Autozone. Original motor and transmission. Just change your fluids.

You got lucky. My 3 year old Kia minivan started spitting engine codes and NOBODY in 6 Kia dealerships knew what was going on. I got in a fender bender and the insurance guy was nice enough to total it for me. Such a waste of money.

Two points. The room inside that’s liberated in EV designs mean that model 3 is as practical a car as many a smaller SUV. Having said that there’s no excuse for it no to be a hatchback.

Younger people would be the ones buying the cheaper EV’s and the money conscious so I would say cheaper EV’s would do well. The problem is the price of gas for people on a budget and insurance. So a cheaper Ev would take the gas price and maintenance out of the equation.

As a Chevy Bolt EV owner I have quit telling friends that not all EVs are pricey. Really sorry they stopped making the Bolt. As for ICE, here in California the writing is on the wall as they say.

For me i like sedans. Would never buy truck, suv, station wagon, etc. Maybe I’m the odd ball. But also like sport cars. Just don’t like the look of pickup, suv and wagons.

Automakers have been trying to get their ticket average up for decades. The problem for automakers is that some of the people who can afford a more expensive vehicle will by the cheap ones. They are willing to force lower income folks to the used market to make sure there are no cheap cars to buy.

If you look at models sold in the US available in other countries - the lowest spec model in the US is usually the highest spec elsewhere.

Nissan has been struggling for a while now. That their cars aren't selling is not a surprise. But that has nothing to do with EVs which aren't selling either, in spite of what the stock pumpers tell you. But let's pretend that's not true. Why then should all of us subsidize other people's cars? We should end subsidies for EVs and level the playing field since they are so popular, right?

Thing is, the average size of a car/truck in the US is so large that you literally cannot buy the smaller cars that are very viable in other countries. If you are in an accident you will be pancaked. To say nothing of girth sizes.

Unfortunately, Nissan is also cancelling it's inexpensive EV the good ole LEAF. I bought a used one and I love it. Too bad Nissan didn't keep on improving it and promoting it over the years.

Nissan Leaf in Australia: $40,000, 39kWh Panasonic battery, not thermally controlled, no charging cable supplied! 270km range, no more being produced versus BYD Dolphin/MG4 51kWh CATL battery, both $40,000, 370km range. Who is going to buy a Nissan Leaf with a 100km lower range and having to pay $500 for a charging cable?

I actually think that the budget EVs would make a difference. SUV sales have been hit pretty hard recently in the US market, as have larger trucks, and whether you look at cars, SUVs or Trucks, people are trending towards the smaller, lighter, less expensive models. Thus, it seems that the reason it is gone. The issue with EVs is a huge, huge lack of charging infrastructure and a few others. The Altima is a good car, but while cars are doing okay if they are small enough, the Altima is too big. The Versa is small enough, but the Versa is generally unpopular because it was uncompetitive. It was cheap and felt it, and the space was terrible, the fuel consumptions wasn't enough to justify it, and they weren't even necessarily super reliable, and so Americans preferred used cars instead.

I would never buy anything like a model 3. Crap boot space is one of many reasons. Anyway Nissan are going fully electric. The updated Micra, to be built here in the UK, will be electric only and, at the right price it will be as successful at the old petrol version. Nissan is going for EVs.

When having to buy a car, certain aspects come to mind… - initial costs, -running costs, - features, - (brand) familiarity - environment If you cannot afford the initial (sticker) price, you have to alter your other requirements. In some countries it is common to finance/ lease you car, in others not: you need years of saving money. Likewise the running costs: the ticket only come once, but filling up/charging, ensurence, road-tax returns every month. You don’t buy a car for parking it in front of your house. No matter what Tony Sheba claims: energy price are going through the roof. Gas prices of €2,62 per litre, and promised to go beyond the €3,00/litre. You compare the features it provides. Most people don’t need to transfer loads of manure or do construction at site all de time. So what is the point of a semi of pick-up truck. I love to drive. Do I definitely don’t need FSD (as an engineer I do appreciate the technology). Etc etc I do care about the environment, and would love a home-battery on wheels. But a bidirectional charger (checked it yesterday) cost 50-fold. Oh, and one thing more: the prospects of the company. No one buys a product, if it’s likely you won’t get parts for it next year.

The difference in range for battery capacity is greater for EV when comparing sedan to SUV. One of the reasons I suppose model 3 sales not so bad.

Why should working Americans continue to suffer with the rising cost of ICE manufacturing, legacy corporate mismanagement, added dealer markups, ongoing gas cost, regular ongoing maintenance costs, ridiculous unneeded add-ons like subscription features, cost of recalls, and exorbitant out-of-warranty costs? ICE or EV, you still need to pay the cost of financing and insurance but if your MSRP is lower your total wasted interest payments are also lower. It's not clear that EV insurance costs are any higher since new ICE/hybrid cars also have complex electronics and sensor technologies that add to the cost of repairs. Meanwhile, battery tech continues to improve on price, value, safety, etc rapidly. Every ICE car replaced is progress.

Cheap cars aren't cheap anymore. Buy a slightly used better car. I hate to see the Versa go. Regulations have added so much costs that low-priced cars are disappearing. A base Versa with five-speed manual is decent, but most got the CVT. Altima was a good car, buyers prefer a SUV. Where are the used cars coming from when fewer new cars are being sold? People aren't liking used EVs.

Relying on third parties is not a problem as long as you keep a very close eye on what they are doing. They tend to be experts in what they do and are likely to do it well Even Tesla uses batteries from third partties.

Claiming ONE bad ICE car by a mediocre brand is cancelled means "people don't want gas cars" is absurd. And the way HEV's are growing faster than BEV's is a good example of that. I have been waiting for an affordable Chinese EV for years. When I heard that Hertz was getting rid of their Teslas I looked into it thinking I could get one for cheap. Most of the cars they were selling were only a couple of years old but had close to 100,000 miles and they still wanted close to $30,000. This means they were probably used for ride sharing and were fast charged most of the time, no thanks. Instead I got a 2 year old NISSAN leaf with under 20,000 miles for under $20,000.

I just got one from Hertz several weeks ago for my son -- Tesla Model 3 year 2022 base model. After applying $4,000 federal credit, the final price was $21,000. I don't remember how many miles on it already; but nothing stands out from my memory. What you were looking at may be one of the more expensive model of Tesla model? Long range or Model S?

The cheap cars are so bad you're better off buying a used car that's better built, more power, safer, and better looking. I owned a Honda Fit. Never again. Autoamkers simply can not build a quality small car that looks good and feels good. They all feel like penalty boxes. They have given up on them, and so customers have as well. People on a genuine budget will buy used as its cheaper.

It's not like gas car owners want just _cheap_ cars. They have their preferences: SUV's, 7-seaters, hatchbacks or whatever and they see, that EV versions are more expensive. Like, if I look for 7 seater here, in Estonia EU, then cheapest one is 18500EUR Dacia Jogger and cheapest EV is TOYOTA PROACE VERSO SHUTTLE ELECTRIC, 62700EUR (Kia EV9 is 90kEUR).

In USA for calendar year to date: - Versa sales are UP 61% - Sentra sales are UP 55% - Total Nissan car sales are UP 20.2% Nissan's major challenge right now is the "Rogue" SUV - its largest selling vehicle, which is beginning to drop volumes rapidly.

I don't get your logic; unlike other automakers Nissan has been around; and has a PE of 5; which means they not only make a profit but your payback as an investor is very quick; Tesla's is currently 65; and most of the BEV makers you promote from China have never made a penny's profit so it is very difficult to figure out how you think Nissan has no future but any of the many Chinese BEVs can't make a profit even with heavy subsidies. For certain most of those 95 remaining Chinese BEV makes will be gone; Nissan will go on; It makes the leaf which has been around a long time. Nissan has gotten smaller but it does seem to know how to make money.

Car companies won't make unprofitable vehicles period. So no one other than Tesla and BYD has a chance at the 25k end of the market. Ice cars are getting more expensive and less profit margin.

You have to include transmission replacement also since we are talking nissan which has the least reliable transmission on the market. Most dying before 100k miles

Honestly, the batteries in modern EV's should outlast the life of the car. Most ICE cars get to around 120K miles. Modern EV's should double that easily. Why is everyone obsessed with battery replacement? Do you know anyone who has replaced their battery, not in an old Nissan Leaf but a modern EV?
