I talked to a man that is a retired GM manager. I was complaining about there are some things that fail commonly. When one certain thing fails all the time why not redesign it and fix it. He said they made contracts with suppliers and the union and it was next to impossible to change a design before the contract runs out. They would rather pay warranty claims and damage customer experience than change a design early.

There is of course the "one horse shay" phenomenon. Its a poem by Oliver Wendall Holmes that's a bit difficult to read due to the early English he used. To summarize, (yes, spoiler ahead), The Deacon of the local church was upset at having to take his carriage in for repairs every time something broke so he commissioned the best craftsmen to use only the highest grade materials to construct a new one. It was "The Deacon's Masterpiece". It is a humorous anecdote to the idea of having every part of a structure be the best material and craftsmanship so no parts break before any other. 100 years to the day after the carriage was built, it collapsed in a heap of dust leaving the then Deacon and his wife sitting in the road.

All these fed up big legacy have only man-ager stealing bonuses for impressing and cheating analysts with faked good quarterly results and these stupid know nothing better than their Excel-sheets. They had 100 years to learn how and on cost of people and tier one to three suppliers in the background who also start their own car businesses to end consumers. However legacy is an old lady with too much cosmetics on. Tesla only learns instantly and with TeslaOne they are just not to beat. Like Daniel said they have no high vertical integration to do so and change things fast enough in legacy and the workers unions like mafia kills them as they are only looking for themselves and NOT the workers that can get more in the Tesla universe or must look for a different task in life because stupid routines are soon done by Teslas Robots as machines making machines 24/7 with the utmost of precision. So better get your kids the best education for tasks and jobs they also fill with their core competencies otherwise they are lost in transition or become cannon fodder! If you look the black clouds everywhere!🤒 Think if people realize what goes really on at Tesla and at which pace they forget about EV and cars… The shares will skyrocket for those who understand it’s today the only sound long term investment besides weapons and pharmaceuticals.😂

I cannot recall any other company that discloses its plans and practices to the degree that Tesla does. For analysts to be ignorant of what they are doing and planning requires an act of will - simply refusing to avail themselves of a wealth of information. I mean they don't even need to read research reports - just log onto KZbin and start watching, and yet they are always making mistakes, missing developments, and repeating falsehoods. Thanks Sam, I saw a video from Sandy Munroe, who said he looked at earlier Tesla models and found some issues with them that he made Tesla aware of. In literally a few months, they had listened to his advice, made the changes on all future models. Sandy said this was incredible, he left Ford after trying to get some production changes, that didn't happen for over 5 years. Learning from expert critical advice, adopting or developing new technology quickly and having the most efficient production systems means you stay ahead of the competition and is surely the mark of a very great company.

Hay Sam, all that remains to be seen is if Tesla use the extra density to increase range or to reduce battery pack size and keep range about the same. Personally I think that smaller packs serve their mission best - making the cars cheaper and getting them out there to more people. This can only work if they keep building out the Supercharging network, which also fits with their mission.
@SkyRiver1

@ozone7

Totally agree! Smaller battery gives you a cheaper car, a lighter car, and thus both a faster and more efficient car! As long as you always reach the next charger there's no problem with the smallest battery! But still some people insist on driving on their daily commute with a gigantic battery that is expensive, and is reducing performance and efficiency! It really is just as stupid as driving to work every day with 200 gallons of fuel in the tank, just in case you might need the range...

It was pretty obvious some years ago that LFP is a better option than Ternary cells. But everyone has to do the same thing so LFP got ignored. M3P solves the performance gap but maintains the safety of LFP. It’s not just that Tesla moves fast. The others don’t move at all.
@hvh377
@hvh377 Жыл бұрын
I remember pretty well that the consensus in the industry was that LFP would be ideal for automotive applications, but Musk needed to be pigheaded and put NCA cells in his cars. @@SkyRiver1 Tell that to the fanboys every time they claim Tesla invented this or that or say Tesla is the best at everything. Let's have some sense of reality about the brand. Tesla isn't that special. They just had the right product out at the right time and it is a big success. It actually took them 2 tries to do it as well, because the model 3 clearly was not the right product. The rest of the automakers already knew that, because they all were making crossover SUV versions of their small sedan models long before Tesla did Let's see if Tesla can make another successful model.

kzbin.info/www/bejne/hIjZemSalrOcotU for abc news item on fire risk…we should all just buy the safer LFP for safety of our family, our neighbours, community and emergency workers. I’d even suggest Fed Gov considers ban, extra tariff or no incentives on lithium ion cars when there is a known safer option. If people want the extra power or range not getting LFP then maybe they should have to pay into an compensation fund the Fed Gov tariff could invest those funds in to help cover costs of EV fire response and recovery plus medical expenses if anyone is hurt.

OK, this new CATL M3P battery is midway between LFP and ternary chemistries in terms of energy density. How about cycle life and cold weather performance? How about cost? Is this a real win, or is it just an alternative battery choice? This video is the first to report better performance than ternary chemistries. That remains to be seen.

Hi Sam, what are your thoughts on the Amprius battery? energy density of 500, now proven and tested and going in to production. 0-80% charge in under 6 mins! @@hvh377 It is easy to make such empty claims, but how many out of all the manufacturers on the planet actually have a deal with CATL? Another interesting question would be how long would it take for a company with no deal with CATL to make a deal, build a battery factory, and then scale production? Still one has to consider... how many automakers have the scale, or are actually using Tesla's new manufacturing techniques to cut costs beyond the battery pack? Because Tesla cars are very efficient and that's why there are plenty of cars with bigger batteries that are still losing to them in terms of range. And that's why Tesla can make EVs profitably. A claim can appear to make sense at first glance, but you should study what it will take to implement it. I'd say Tesla and a few Chinese companies that are already contracted with CATL have about at least a 2 to 3-year advantage compared to the others.

Toyoto has done extensive market research and the big picture shows that populations that are not in the West that need cars simply do not have the infrastructure to adapt to electric cars and it is hard enough to supply electricity even to thousands that do not have it. Plans to solve the problem are not on the short list so it could take years. It is a case of hybrid if possible in the city and gas once you leave it. In short they see no advantage of going all electric too soon. The Electric makers are like the early makers of the first gasoline engine cars. Too many, too underfunded and nothing to distinguish them as special. i would not be surprised in Toyoto ends up with a very good balance sheet for as much as 10 years. As for the West no matter what the brand a new gas powered car will have near zero resale value in as short as 5 years.

(my opinion, after having driven with radar sensors the last 6-7 years), nothing against Tesla, I'm super excited for HW4, with the new high def radar they are adding. All the self-driving features just isn't there most places outside the US, so it's not a specially big selling point, but nice driving assists with radar would be really welcome.

Range / Price are not the primary problem of Tesla. There are basically 2 things that manufacturers can compete on 1. Service quality, Tesla has too few service centers, with that long wait times and distance from customer. The other thing is interior quality, if Tesla used the model S interior on all of their cars along with better service quality - there would be no competition, it's as simple as that. I think the best example is Hyundai ioniq 5 / 6 vs Tesla Model 3 / Y. If Tesla had comparable features and appearance in the interior, the would not be an objective argument for buying an Ioniq. There would only be subjective arguments about looks / suspension tuning, but Tesla would be offering a better product at a lower price. I think most buyers would opt with Tesla. I am genuinely surprised that Tesla has not implemented the Model S / X interior in 3 / Y, it wouldn't make the car cost that much more or reduce profits that significantly, yet it would eliminate almost all market share for the competition. It would severely damage the chances of legacy automakers entering the EV market, it almost seems as if Tesla is intentionally leaving the door open. Japanese manufacturers in particular would probably lose significant market share in particular because they would not have a compelling product at anything above 35K, leaving them with only the low margin economy cars, which will probably struggle against Chinese cars.

Just so that you know (if you didn't already and are, in fact, interested), because Viking didn't mention it: it's a step up in energy density compared to _LFP_ chemistry. LFP is not the most energy dense type of Li-ion battery chemistry (to say the least), but M3P (LMFP) is supposed to combine the benefits of LFP with improved energy density. I don't think this chemistry is bringing energy densities close to NCA territory. So don't expect any range records or performance records to be broken with this chemistry.

Time will tell? The actual numbers vary by business school, but there are some general historical statistics on market share and the number of big global players in mature markets of many different types. There is usually room for about eight players. The leader’s market share % goes down the line in reducing percentages as does the net profit margins, until the margin is insufficient for long term survival. The market leader tends to set the prices and their market share often settles very roughly around the 30% mark. The EV market is still immature so the degree of market dominance might be expected to reduce in time. This is to be anticipated, and in the Tesla case should not be touted as a negative. Tesla’s and BYD’s agility is a strategic competitive edge that the legacy auto makers will need to learn from in order to survive. EV consumers who intend to buy and use their vehicle over a long period, need to think very carefully about purchasing from a likely long term survivor, who can service their vehicle, say 10 years out.

CATL is the number one battery manufacturer in China. BYD is the number two battery manufacturer in China. Will the CATL M3P battery be so superior to BYD's Blade battery? Probably not. The energy density of M3P batteries is about 15% higher than than BYD's lithium iron phosphate batteries, reaching 210 Wh/kg, and the cost is comparable to that of the Blade battery. The real issue is cycle life. The Blade battery is capable of 3000 charge cycle (over 700,00 miles!) The M3P proprietary technology is very similar to BYD's lithium iron phosphate, but with the addition of manganese. If the M3P has a cycle life of over 3000, then it will dominate the marketplace. The price of lithium dropping 50% is a bit of a red herring, since the price is still up over 700% since 2011. About 4 month ago CATL reported that they were producing solidstate batteries in their ordinary Lithium NMP production lines. At this time these had about 50% of the energy density of the L-NMP batteries. CATL predicted at the time that they would have gotten the energy density up to par with the L-NMP battery in about a year. And then we start talking. This is important as the more electric cars we see on the street the closer we get to the ban of L-NMP powered vehicles in tunnels, on ferries, in parking buildings, and parked close to other buildings. The insurance companies will refuse to insure these vehicles due to the high risk of fires that easily spreads and are difficult to extinguish. This is why the solidstate battery soon will overtake the L-NMP battery. And you are 100% correct about the other car manufacturers. Look at VW and BMW as two examples. They invest heavily in Northvolt. A company that now asks for additional $8 billon in investments/loans to build more factories. They don't even have one fully functional factory after 5 years and almost 4 years of having a factory up. 90% of all the cells they build is scrapped due to poor quality. I wonder why 🤔 Can it be due to the fact that they buy old technique manufacture machines from Chinese companies and expect these machines to perform world class quality product? Well, the whole management of that company lives by the "Emperors new clothes" mentality. Say "yes sir" even if you know it will lead to disaster. So that company is not even in the race for it. It will be the biggest black hole for investors money in the world.

I'll bite. Modern cars are made to absorb medium and large collisions with crumble zones. It's essential for Tesla's safety score (which is better than any other car). So at a medium collision that might injure or kill passengers the cars can't be repaired, but the risk is significantly reduced. As for the structural pack, it's under the passengers and if damaged the crumble zones are already compressed ei the car is totalled. (as a non expert)

@@johnagapito5326 from the teardown that sandy monroe did it is clear that the cells can not be swapped/replaced. The cells have to be very high quality- not even sure they can depower part of a pack so if a cell shorts it might be really bad for the pack. If it just goes to high resistance it might be alright. They do have a crazy amount of battery data though so they can make some good estimates. But yeah it will be interesting to see.
