Greetings from Norway….the land of the EV’s. Great video, but I must make a couple of comments. The new 2024 Kona (which I now own) is made as an EV to start with, with the internal combustion engine as an option, unlike the previous Kona which was first designed as a fossil car. As for the annoying warning chimes, I turn them off every trip and takes just 6 seconds. I have saved the settings page on my “Favourites” star button on the steering wheel which I access at start up. It’s so simple and straight forward. Another feature not mentioned is remote parking with the use of the “smart key”. Parking in a tight spot? No problem, get out of the car and move the car backwards and forwards by using the smart key. This is a completely new car with only the name “Kona” remaining. It’s an absolute joy to drive, and as for charging speeds, not sure what all the fuss is about. I charge my car overnight in my garage to 80% which gives me 350km (218m) in winter which is plenty for my daily use. In summer at 100% I get nearly 600km (375m) urban driving with minimal use of climate control. Another important feature the 2024 Kona has is the “Over The Air updates” (OTA) which is a must these days. I have driven many EV’s for 8 years here in Norway and I must say that the new Kona is fantastic value for the money, and one of the best cars I’ve owned.

The Kona is still on an ICE platform, maybe they designed the sheet metal as an EV first but the underpinnings of the car are still underpinnings of an ICE car, which then got a battery and motors shoved into it in the case of the Kona electric.

So, update. I've just received my 64kWh Kona Ultimate. I have to say that I'm astounded by the refinement and build quality. Having the physical buttons is just a godsend. Everything is in usable reach and intuitive to boot. OTA update gave us wireless Android Auto and Car Play to appreciate the not-too-bad Bose OE system. The tech is amazing and once you've figured the shortcut key can be programmed to vehicle assists, you can turn the driver alert warnings and speed alarms within 2 seconds, as part of your pre-ride ritual. Living in hilly rural area, it's great to get all that regen. Life on the twisties doesn't invoke much body roll or lean, so I'm impressed. Ride isn't crashy and I'd say it's nicely damped on our overbanded, potholed roads. A comfy family cruiser it is. The cabin, finished in white leather is light airy and roomy. Rear facing child seat fits spot on and the reclined position means that my youngest doesn't stamp her feet on the backrests, unlike on my X5. Relegates my my X5 for local journeys when carrying our mountain bikes and kit and the wife's countryman for pottering around. Wanted a car that was slightly bigger than the Countryman to swallow up the kit for 3 mountain bikers and a bum shuffler, and this delivers! We've only had it a day. but I'm growing to love the EV life. Also going to quite enjoy the massive fuel savings with Hive charging.

Rightly, the presenters recommend smaller wheels for performance (as do many reviewers for many cars). However, all the manufacturers' websites offer larger wheels for higher trims with no option to get the smaller wheels from the base trim. Why is this? Should the reviewer community pressure the manufacturers to offer this.

Also, does the sensor beep when the driver is fiddling with the control screen? And not looking at the road?

Drove the EX30 at the Everything Electric show in Excel Centre London. It is small ! The back is very disappointing and the single screen is truly awful. For the styling the EX30 looks great from the outside, but inside it is a bit meh ! Very light steering that really makes you feel totally disconnected from the road. Nippy it is, worth the money it is not. The Kona feels like an altogether different car, familiar comfortable and as a driver you just feel in control. Loads of space in the back seats, the boot feels bigger. It’s pretty nippy and plenty fast enough. It may not have the styling of the EX30 but it is worth the money. It just feels solid and roomy.

The interior is commendably recycled, and whether you think it looks cheap is a matter of opinion. And no buttons is a big plus not a minus. Once you’ve set it to your profile you hardly ever need to touch the screen anyway. Lots of stuff can be done by voice control. You very quickly get used to it and you really don’t need dials, switches or heads up displays. Basically, people who have bought one (like me) will certainly not be disappointed. It has potential but it isn’t there yet, and certainly not good enough to do away with buttons and drivers panel or HUD.

@@Banyan314 Hey, I’m not defending it, I’m offering a different POV. Presumably you have the same difficulty with Tesla, which is fair enough, but it hasn’t stopped them being a successful disrupter.

@@andrewallen-tidy3818 I don't think I'm missing the point Andre, but we're all entitled to our opinion. EX30 will be marketed to families and I think those families will struggle with its shortcomings and idiosyncrasies. Tesla can pull off the 'no button' interior because their software is generally very good. The others can't match it and fall between the two stools. We've run an electric Kona for about four years and would have the new one over the Volvo still. We sat in the Volvo for two minutes, looked at each other and shook our heads. We were actually disappointed to not like it, as we went especially to see it. Shame, as we have a nineteen year old XC90 that will probably go to the grave with us! 😁

I actually really like the EX30, just wish it had more buttons. But it being smaller is actually a + to me. Too many cars are aimed at people who should just be buying a mini-van to haul all their kids and gear around basically. Stuff like this should fully embrace actually being small and aimed at single people or couples with no kids. There's not many options for those people other than super super tiny cars like Fiat 500 or Smart 2-4 type cars.
@Jetter6387 ай бұрын
@@VMYeahVN True....my feeling is that had they just added 4 inches to the platform it could have served a much broader audience. But I'm sure they have to rationalize where the EX30 fits into their overall product offering.

Nicola -- THANK YOU for actually pronouncing Hyundai similarly to how it sounds, as opposed to how the condescending marketing team has told you to because they assume English speakers are idiots. Neither of you mention a heat pump. I think that's one of the major points you have to cover in any car -- 310 miles of range turns to 200 miles in the winter without one, though front and rear heated seats mollify that well. Frunks are direct indicators of front hoods which are too large and should be derided. The Kona has an excuse -- it's a gas car converted to EV. (I sure hope we see the end of those soon -- front wheel drive in an EV?) The HUD does not just look neat -- it makes the car much safer. I don't understand why that's not on every new car.

Hello Dai. Yes, Brits typically pronounce hyundai as the name Dai which has Welsh use as the short version of David or Dafydd and is in common use. So saying day for Dai isn't natural for us. Using a different pronunciation for car brands is common compared to their country of origin eg BMW and VW. Let's not make a big deal out of this.

No way can it be a family car. Maybe a single person or no kids couple’s car! What I would really like is an EX40 on this ev platform rather than its current ICE chassis. So much more practical space. I think we make too much of the screen though. Thousands of Tesla drivers can’t be that wrong surely? I tried the voice controls in a non driving test and they really are very good.

This is one of the best fun comparison video's on the channel. At the end of the day it all boils down to the use case of the cars. Both have plusses and minuses as far as performance (Volvo) and practicality (Kona). Ultimately what are you going to use it for? To cover most bases for me I would have to agree the Kona would be the more likely option. But I'd decline both at the moment as I do not have the ability to fit a wall box where I live. Would I hire one? yes and the Kona would win again for its practicality. On todays British roads there are very few occasions that I could enjoy the acceleration of the Volvo but it would be fun to try although the tyres might wear a tad more. Top job girls and thanks for sharing.

I’ve had the XC40 recharge for two years. The google android based infotainment system is horrible. Often crashes, lags for no reason, has to be rebooted often, remnants of android for phones occasionally rears its head and updates seem to have slowed it down. The google voice detection is good but often for no reason, it will understand what I’ve said and then say it’s not connected (no signals randomly occur in the same places that previously it was fine). Oh and once it randomly lost all my saved radio stations! They did add car play but it took a looooong time from when they said they would. It’s a reason NOT to buy the Volvo! The Kona could be a good replacement but the bing-bongs are an immediate no-no so while I enjoyed the video, I won’t be considering either car!

I mostly agree, but me personally i don't relate to why people want the EX30 to be bigger. The whole point of compact crossovers/hatchbacks is for them to not be big bulbous family vans. Great for a single person or a couple who don't have kids and might maybe need a small bit of cargo capacity but not always. I was planning to get a Kia Niro but the interior design of the Kona is so good I would be willing to drive a car that looks like a hippo for that interior functional and spacious design :) It isn't just the buttons that are spot on for me but also the placement of everything. The center console area in the Kona isn't full of knobs, gear shifter and buttons but rather provides ample storage/drink area instead.
