The I-Pace seems a bit weirdly forgotten about nowadays, you rarely see it pop into comparisons. Which baffles me because it's one of the very best EVs to drive, practical, luxurious, well-designed, even with some offroading capability. The main drawback has been price, but you can get used ones for half the price now.

I enjoyed the review - even though I knew before I watched it that there's no way I'd ever choose the XC40 over the i-pace (or the closely related Polestar). On my current company car list the Jag comes in at about £35/month more than a Model 3 long range despite the massive difference in list price - although both seem to fluctuate a lot depending on sales targets for the quarter. I still don't understand why so many people choose SUVs over hatchbacks or estates. They make sense for people with kids under 4 (after that they climb into their own car seat) and people with mobility restrictions. Otherwise they're less efficient and handle and ride worse than the cars they're based on. A year ago I chose a Tesla Model 3 - the i-pace was too expensive and charging infrastructure was a lot worse and the Polestar hadn't been released. The Tesla is still the most advanced EV on the market and I'm a big fan, but I don't rate the handling that highly, I'd like a better and quieter interior and the sat nav is woeful compared to Google or Waze. Actual build quality is fine - nothing rattles, the paint is more than acceptable, as are the panel gaps and it actually feels pretty well screwed together. It all works and I haven't seen anything to suggest it won't continue to do so. Perceived quality didn't match an Audi or BMW, but it all works and doesn't seem fragile. Charging is less of an issue than I thought - I think it might make a difference on about 15 days per year and the gap is closing. There'll be much more choice when I come to choose again later this year... Edit: And I'll never buy petrol car again. If you can charge at home and don't regularly drive over 300 to 400 miles per day (I know the realistic range is only about 200 miles) they're just better, including being more convenient.

there is really no excuse, in 2021, for the Jaguar asking price to have a maximum charging power of just 100kW. It should have 150kW+ speed and 10-80% SOC in 30min or less.

Less efficient, not quite as quick etc, but it’s a car I really look forward to getting into. Interior of Jaguar compared to Tesla is like comparing a Rolls Royce to an Austin Allegro. Interesting choice for a twin-test review - thanks. Also, I thought Wookie's comments about how EV driving makes you a calmer, more relaxed, safer driver was excellent - especially the example of pulling out of a junction, or cutting across the oncoming traffic lane etc and how that's SO much easier and safer to execute in an instant-torque EV. Great advice.
@EleanorPeterson
@EleanorPeterson 3 жыл бұрын
Hmm. 🤔 I'm always wary of power and speed and safety claims. Four-wheel drive will give you great traction off the line; lots of power, rapid acceleration... Many people insist that they NEED to have a powerful car because it's having vast performance held in reserve that makes them safer drivers... No. On public roads, that's nonsense. If we all drove vehicles limited to 4 or 5 mph there'd be no crashes, no injuries, and no deaths. Adding speed only makes things worse. Having high performance in reserve doesn't make for safer drivers. It just makes people THINK that they're safer drivers. Two different things. Much like when driving under the influence of drink or drugs, it's one's situational awareness that changes, and it's never for the better. Successful racing drivers don't smoke joints or grab a few beers before a Grand Prix. People in high performance cars take risks. Yes, they do. Ask an insurance company's Loss Adjuster. They drive beyond their abilities and inappropriately for the prevailing conditions on public roads. That's not an opinion, that's just what the facts and figures say, year after year after year. Whizzy, shiny EVs won't change a thing. Making performance safety claims is really just an excuse to have a heavy right foot. Whee. Look at me. EVs are certainly quick, but drivers are just as slow-witted and risk-loving as they've always been. 7 litre V8 muscle-cars don't make for safe roads, and neither will EVs; they'll just make people even more overconfident. They'll charge out of turnings into gaps that aren't there, because the gap they're aiming for is 'owned' by another driver with another car with similar (excessive) performance, and with their own, same, level of overconfidence. So he/she can close the gap just as quickly as the driver trying to get into it. Beep, screech, crunch. Nobody wins. Instead of simply slowing down and taking their time, they'll rely on their instant acceleration and 'driver assist' features to keep them out of trouble. Anti-skid, traction-control, lane awareness, adaptive this, that and the other... Oh, and they'll have half of their attention on the car's gigantic entertainment display screen, instead of on the traffic conditions. None of an EV's capabilities make for safer driving because there are still people involved, and however smart or quick the cars get, overconfident people will always be the weakest link in the chain. 😞 [I'm an ex rally driver, by the way, so I'm no stranger to fast cars and risk taking.]
@johnmckay1423
@johnmckay1423 3 жыл бұрын
@@EleanorPeterson I'd largely agree. The car I drive has a ridiculous amount of power - because it's an EV that was the best value on the company car list, rather than because I was looking for a fast car. I previously had a "warm/hot" hatch (fast 12 years ago) and said I'd never buy a car that powerful again because you couldn't use it safely on the road. However, while I very rarely use the performance, it is much more predictable which makes it easier, and I think safer, to deploy. You wait for the opportunity, press go at exactly the moment you want it and even accelerating hard, I've never experienced wheel spin or torque steer, whatever the conditions. The strong regenerative braking seems to smooth out the driving of everyone who drives it and encourages much more planning and anticipation.

I still wonder why there is a focus on 0-60 on EV cars and normally aspirated cars. This should not be a focus as most drivers would not be able to handle that sudden burst of power an EV is capable of. Top speed are also irrelevant as we are ultimately governed by national speed limits which are never 150+ in the UK. Nice to watch a review without Tesla being brought into the equation allowing these cars to stand on their own merits . Well done team Electrifying 👍👍 up

I still think that Jaguar are missing an opportunity by not selling a cheaper version of the i-Pace. Do we really need that big, heavy expensive battery? A smaller version, say 70KwHr would weigh less, handle better and probably give 180 miles per charge instead of 230. Also, make the cheaper variant rear wheel drive only. This would shed additional weight and cost. Maybe make a slightly plainer version without the glass roof etc. Just make those changes and the car would even be faster - and cost less.

The iPace seems to not have the open cabin in the front as a lot of pure electric cars. I won't say the XC40 Recharge is a pure electric car. It's a shared or converted to electric car. Now with vehicles like the Ioniq 5 coming to market, or Volvo showing it's to-be next generation EVs with the Concept Recharge, the whole front area will be open. It's open on the Ioniq. It may be open on say the VW ID4. So, iPace being pure electric didn't really take advantage of that. Otherwise, it's smartly designed. The Volvo interior is too black. It needs a punch of another color. There's one with an orange carpet and door trim and even if that's not the most appealing color, it does brighten the interior. There's also one with white seats and has some white on the doors that breaks the monotony of the black. I think it is time for a new-look Volvo interior. This one has become very familiar and it's quite nice. So Volvo will have to make a very nice interior in their next-gen cars as they set the bar high and expectations will be high.

On a 3+36 lease a basic petrol XC40 can be had for `£350 and a trim or two up and you’re into £450 - but if you want an electric version today its £800+ a month - which is insane - I have an XC40 and would love the electric as its been a great car - But I can save significant cash by getting a Tesla and a second hand trailer for tip days!

Either way, they're both faster than the "Mustang" (vomit!) Mach-E. Seems the world has gone topsy-turvy if the Jag has a bigger boot than the Volvo, does it not? I haven't sat in an I-Pace, but perhaps its ride height is similar to an old Subaru Outback? (Before they got massive)

Clean , fresh and still laggy! Doesn't seem intuitive and is so poor after the refresh. It is designed to keep Jag lovers into electric.

I saw an iPace in a car park yesterday. It looks amazing !! Sadly , at £63K in the UK, this is a bit beyond my budget. But if I had £63K burning a hole in my pocket (or bank account) then I would buy the Jaguar iPace over the Volvo.

I like the Jag, & understand the appeal, but the Volvo wins it for me. It looks more current & is far more practical, the only pity is its not a purpose built fully EV.

They sell the 320 HP iPace in Norway ? The Jag is overpriced, and for looks it is so dull compared to the new Etrons. Great video style and very informative.

E-tron? Is there any decent car with that badge? Ok you're talking of E-Tron GT... A Porsche Taycan in disguise

Yeah can't agree on the styling point at all. The Jaguar is sleek and well-designed; the E-Tron is a fat overwrought box and pretty clearly a converted ICEV.

You must be kidding. IPace still best LUXURY SUV, Taycan aside (more Sport than Luxe). Volvo is completely middle management. Competent, but will never getbthe brass ring or... stir the imagination.

You seriously cant compare a volvo with a premium car. They are in two completely different segments of the market. Someone looking at luxury cars arent going to even consider buying a volvo unless they are braindead. I do not care how much volvo is trying to upmark their cars lately, they never have and never will be a premium car brand. Even the most powerfull models they make are slow and sluggish, and handle like boats.

It's a utility vehicle, it should be boxy. Volvo sedans like the s90 and s60 aren't boxy.

The Mustang Mach-E instantly made the I-PACE obsolete. The MME is also quite sporty and sporty looking, is as (or nearly as) nice inside, has better range, and (at least in the U.S.) is much cheaper than the I-PACE.

The Mach e interior quality is nowhere near the jags, and it’s slower. It’s good looking though and the range is good

- Volvo range is pretty poor and a bigger deal than the video implies. - I like that Volvo sits up higher like a traditional SUV. - I-Pace interior is much nicer, and super nice leather. - I-Pace has a better stereo. - I-Pace has a better warranty: 5 years! - Local Volvo sales rep is an idiot: more interested in talking politics and actually openly talked against Volvo EV because of range and assumed difficulty charging it on a trip. Said the one EV they had was a demo and not for sale, never offered a test drive. Again, complete idiot. Both are nice!!!

We have an ex JLR employee in our office, she wouldn't buy an ipace if you paid her. Some of the horror stories about them you wouldn't believe.

JLR hopeless on reliability no matter what model you choose in the entire range...Vovo safest option and as an SUV which is what the test is about I would take the Volvo every time.

I was looking forward to the XC40, but there are two major reasons I’d get the Jag Firstly I can’t believe Volvo RedTache cling the safety of it by blanking off the start button. They still have it in the hybrid, petrol and diesel versions This removal of a layer of intrinsic safety is unforgivable, especially coming from Volvo The second is having 60:40 instead of 40:20:40 folding rear seats I can live with that But not the lack of start button, I want to be incharge, pardon the pun, of my car and driving . Also reduces the occasion and turns it into an appliance etc Even the Ford Mustang MachE has the start button , so it’s worth a look if you’re thinking of either of these vehicles 👍🏻 #ShameOnVolvo
