how do you think it would sound with a s.s. amp? i want the tube sound but for various reasons am 99% of the time not able to have one and play as loud as it would need.

I wasn't too happy with this pedal providing all the distortion through a solid state amp. What really does the trick with SS amps is the Friedman BE-OD pedal. That will make any amp sound like a great tube amp.
