The Hot Wax is a dual overdrive unit, featuring the classic Hot Tubes overdrive and the Crayon. The Hot Tubes is a transparent overdrive/booster capable of producing those huge overdrive tones similar to the old Colorsound Power Boost David Gilmour used in the early and mid 70s.
The Crayon is a slightly more modern full range overdrive, similar to the BK Butler/Chandler Tube Driver and Boss BD-2, with lots of headroom and tube-like compression and dynamics.

I watched this video several times. I bought one off Reverb. Just got it today. I have both the Crayon and Hot Tubes but its the blend that does the trick. Pairing them into a dual overdrive was a good thing. Add a 1/4 note analog delay and some hall reverb and travel to another dimension. Thanks man.

Hi Bjorn, I liked your review so much that I swapped my EHX Crayon for a Hot Wax and I'm very happy with it, especially when I stacked it with my EHX Ram's Head Big Muff Reissue. Using the Hot Tubes side, I was able to get the tones you'd get by placing a PowerBoost/Overdriver after a Ram's Head. I also enjoyed hearing the tone produced by having both sides of the Hot Wax on which sounded like a cranked tube preamp. I don't know if you could try these combinations, but they were quite a pleasure for my ears. So, I'd like to thank you for this helpful and serious work of reviewing gear. Best regards from France.

If you're in the market for a high quality, versatile, noticeable overdrive, get this pedal. Incredible dynamic range that allows you to use almost any guitar to fit into a variety of different styles and genres. My good friends and fellow musicians noticed a huge improvement in my tone once I added this to my board. Absolutely destroys the tube screamer I was using before I started running this gem. Does an incredible job at enhancing both your clean and distorted amp channels.

I use this pedal to tame an English Muff'n that is too much, so I roll the Muff down and run it to this. I wanted to stack Tube Screamers and since I saw this pedal but passed it by in the shop time and time again, I thought I'd research it and see. Glad I did, because I also run a TS9 after it and use the Hot Wax and the TS together, going from Crayon to Hot Tubes just to get diff tones. I hit the Muff before it with the output barely on and it is incredible. I want to add a compressor pedal to this setup to see how it sounds. I throw in a vibe as well with delay and yeah, it's pretty Gilmourish, all on a Les Paul

I don't think I heard them stacked. Have you ever tried to stack OCD into a colorsound power booster? I just tried it with my new power booster clone, and wohha mama, is it wild. Especially with humbuckers. I thought it might get muddy, but with the right blend of volume and gain, it sounds pretty killer. I know the OCD already has a fair amount of midrange and compression, but the power booster gives it way more harmonics, and response. Fun stuff.

Carcosa is fantastic as both a boost and a crazy fuzz, but not 'smooth' at all. If you want massive wall of fuzz or edgy splatty sounds then it's amazing. I recently got this pedal and love the tones it produces. I find that it adds a massive and unreasonable volume boost, though, especially when stacked. When using the pedals in isolation, but especially when stacked, I need to keep the volume knobs on the pedal turned nearly all the way down, even when the drive knobs aren’t dialed too high. Anyone else have this issue, or have a useful suggestion? I’d turn the guitar volume down, but then I’m not driving the pedal. I use a volume pedal after my drives, but then I face a two-step issue. First I need to engage the pedal, and then back off the volume. That seems a bit clunky.

Ok, hard to tell what the problem might be but keep in mind that the Hot Wax, and at least the Crayon side, has a bit of mid range and compression. Both of your amps are fairly scooped and open, so adding more mids and compression will sound louder or you’ll perceive a tone with more presence.

Don't be so sure. Imo this pedal is not very good and would not even get you close to the tones of the other two you mentioned. But hey, maybe it will work for you, But I really tried to make it sound good and it didn't. Sorry to say. The Crayon side is ok, pretty decent.

I mean...you tell me. Does this sound good? It sounded worse in person. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rpXFladvbKeae6c You're better off with an SD-1 and a BD-2.

Matt Gilbert difference between a fender super Reverb and a Hiwatt circuit. Night and day. One is lower voiced, warm whereas the other is thinner and sometimes harsh sounding. Big difference between those amps and shows with the video demos.

Yeah I know for sure that a 140$ pedal can’t get close to two 400$ pedals. But for now I’m still building my board and I’ll probably get the PB and TD-X one day...

I do not like this pedal for guitar. Having a shared EQ makes it difficult to dial in a great tone on both sides. The blend knob is next to useless for guitar, but it comes in handy for bass. I find this pedal better for bass guitar than electric guitar. Otherwise I really like both the Crayon and the Hot Tubes!
@gilmourishofficial
@gilmourishofficial 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, the blend knob is probably more suitable for bass. I've never used it on guitar. I find it easy to dial in the tones for both though. I mainly use the Crayon but adding the Hot Tubes for boost, with the same EQ, works nicely for me. I guess it depends on the amp and pickups. too. As you can see in the clip, the EQ settings for both circuits are more or less the same.

Hot Wax or BD2? 🤯

Both pedals a very versatile and will work on most amps. The Hot Wax has both the Crayon and Hot Tubes, so it will cover more ground. Hard to choose one really.

Hi Bjorn, Excellent Demo, Nice Pedal, but is it The One. Mr Gilmour used so many different Pedals into a HiWatt I just don't know anymore . I met David Gilmours Amp Tech, an English man, Mr Jim Mc Leod, it was during the Delicate Sound of Thunder Tour, he Lived here in Melbourne who said when I was looking for that Gilmour Tone first you need a HiWatt Amp and a Tube Driver Pedal, then Learn his Technique! He then started playing a Red MIJ Squire through an Amp running through a 4x15 Yamaha Cab and it was like standing in front of Mr Gilmour ! A moment I will treasure always! If you could only have one Distortion/Overdrive Pedal what would You choose? Thank you for all the work that you do for us Gilmour fans, I am truly Greatful! Take care♥️👍🎸. Melbourne, Australia.

Thanks for the kind words! David obviously never used the Hot Wax, nor the two pedals featured in it but this is the only pedal - that I know of - that combines the sonic qualities of both the Tube Driver and Power Boost that’s been staples in David’s setup since the early 70s. And it’s cheap and widely available. That was my point with the review. There are a lot of very absolute opinions out there on how to achieve David’s tones and while a Hiwatt and Tube Driver will get you close, it doesn’t really matter if you don’t know how to set them up and how to incorporate his techniques into that. I guess my pedal would be a Boss BD2. It can do pretty much anything and it’s easy to make sound great regardless of what guitar and amp you’re using.

Yes but one would think the tube amp circuit would have a warmer sound but unfortunately it does not present that the crayon circuit actually came across fuller sounding .

The bonus with this Hot Wax compared to the Nano Hot Tubes is that the HW has bass and treble controls, while the sinle nano only has a tone control. Makes all the difference towards the Power Boost tones.
