The mitochondrial electron transport chain is a series of protein complexes and organic molecules in the inner membrane of mitochondria that transfer electrons and protons across a membrane. The ETC passes electrons from NADH and FADH2 to protein complexes and mobile electron carriers.
Coenzyme Q (CoQ) and cytochrome c (Cyt c) are mobile electron carriers in the ETC, and O2 is the final electron recipient.
The respiratory electron transport chain (ETC) consists of four oxidoreductase complexes:
the NADH dehydrogenase (complex I),
the succinate dehydrogenase (complex II),
the cytochrome c reductase (complex III) and
the cytochrome c oxidase (complex IV).
