How do MAP controlled thermostats work? I use a failed one that came out of a 5 series E60 BMW that was overheating to show what's inside the housing and how it all functions.

These problems usually are found in a loose or corroded electrical connector or the electronic controlled thermostat itself is at fault.
Another possible cause is a failed ECU, but is the least likely cause.
A coolant leak will cause some of these codes to set. (depending on models)
The thermostat itself has failed.
A short or open has occurred in the wiring harness between the computer and thermostat.
