Thanks!.... I want to mention something here... I couldn't access the files the way you did in the video because my screen "where the magic happens" was different. They must have removed that option as a security measure so what I did was a workaround. I used a "Mini XP" boot CD which allowed me to access the system 32 files and then change the file names around. Once this was accomplished everything else worked as you outlined it in the steps to change the password. Once again, thank you.

Worked on my 7 year old computer running windows 7. Got my files back. Thank you! Actually, the first portion didn't work for me. I downloaded an iso of Kali linux and a program named "etcher". Used Etcher to make a bootable flash drive for Kali linux with ease. The old PC boot right up with that flash drive and it gave me full access to the files in the win32 directly. (First time I used Linux actually. Pretty Cool!) I renamed the 2 files with ease and the rest was as you described. The command line interface worked like a charm.

IMPORTANT DETAIL: Your computer must be connected to the internet via a network cable before launching the Startup Repair process. If your computer is not connected to the internet, the "Send information" window, visible at 1:14, will not pop-up at the end of the repair process, and you will not be able to click "View problem details" button and this method will not work. PS: I have not tested whether internet connection via WiFi will work. I can only confirm that it works via cable.

Hi, im really bad at technology so forgeting my password it was a trauma for me since i was unable to get any help from anywhere. SO this video was recommanded to me by a friend( Thank you Aryan) . For those who cannot see C: in recovery mode: * restart and press F2 to open BIOS (or F10 or F11) * in System Configuration / SATA operation, deselect RAID (for HICP for instance) * apply changes * reboot in recovery mode and follows the video instructions in recovery mode * when rebooting normally to reach the login screen, press F2 again to enter BIOS, enable RAID again, apply changes and carry on with booting * follow the rest of the instructions Btw, don’t forget to rename cmd.exe back to normal when you’re finished.

My old HP didn't allow the full path, but the reset during boot got me into the HP fixit screens. One of the options was a command prompt, which allowed me to make the file-name swap, then to complete the process. Thanks! Carl

i did it. BUt it didn't work. I modified both files but when i was on the login sesion Utilman didn't open. SO i tought i misspeled so i did it all again but cmd was no where to be found and Utilman had restored by itself (preserving Utilman1). What can i do?

It doesn't work I launch startup repair and after repairing it shows me another window where I can watch diagnostic without link to notepad or use System Restore (which ask me a password) and if I press done or cancel it restarts the laptop 😞

In that case you have to rename those files by any means available to you. For example, you can put that HDD into another PC and then rename those files. Or you can boot your PC from a USB flash drive which contains a portable Windows like Hiren's boot CD or use a bootable USB drive with Windows 7/10/11.
