This is my homemade rat zapper that I was forced to make a while back because I had a problem with 2 rats that found their way into our home, chewed up expensive HD cables and electrical wires, as well as plastic water lines causing hundreds of dollars in damage. Normally, I would chose not to kill the rats because I grew up with many Gerbils as pets, but when you have highly destructive rats, which are very smart, you must kill them to put an end the problem. Most people cannot afford to throw hard earned money away repairing extensive damage caused by rats. The device uses the high voltage joule thief circuit(shown in a video that I uploaded to my channel), to charge up 2 high voltage capacitors which I removed from an old CRTV. The power supply is (1) Li-Ion 18650 cylindrical battery which is charged by a simple 300mA circuit. The circuit tapers off charging current as the voltage nears the maximum voltage of 4.18V. Also included is a simple battery voltage indicator. This circuit uses a "lower" voltage(450-500V) at high current, compared to the devices sold in stores which use very high voltage(5,000V+) at a lower current. Both are deadly.

Not worth posting an execution. I don't know if you saw a video on YT where a guy made a beautiful aluminum sculpture by pouring molten aluminum into a Red ant(Fire ant) mound. You need to see how he was brutally attacked in the comment section. LOL There are some sick, twisted people out there. Red ants, which bite people and animals feet causing pain, swelling, and even allergic reactions to the venom, they're worried about.

I used wood to separate electrodes in a sensor once. I discovered that over time, the wood absorbed enough moisture out of the air that it's resistance began to drop significantly and started tripping the sensor circuit. If you're using this in a humid area, you might start to lose charge overnight due to the moisture in the wood.
@electronicsNmore
@electronicsNmore 7 жыл бұрын
That surely can happen, but I have not had any problems. Use rubber or acrylic pads under the large wood section, and place a piece of plastic between the small block of wood and large block. Bolt the small block to the large section using a nylon bolt. Problem will be avoided.

Thanks very much for the idea. We have squirrels getting into our engine compartments, chewing wires and connectors. After two cars (newer with soy insulation on wires, attracting them) were discovered damaged in a week, we made sure to always put the cars in the garage at night. But we have had to use the garage for other things during the day, and have been parking it outside - always careful to make sure we brought them both inside at night. Then, we found one of those same cars with wiring damaged yet again a week ago. Barely got that repaired, have had to not set cars out on the driveway even during the day for this week, and last night we discovered extensive damage on a 30year old vehicle. Guess they've gotten into a habit. :( We're repairing the fourth time now and determined to stop this damage. We actually have an electric fence charger, maybe we'll just use that and give them some shocks. It was figuring out the platform that had me stumped this time. I think we can come up with a variation that will fit in the latest engine compartment where they've been trying to nest. In the deep past, we had those tall cylindrical bird feeders with metal perches. The squirrels would climb the metal pole onto the top of the feeder (metal) and hang down to hold onto the bottom perch, then scoop seed out and empty the whole feeder in a matter of seconds onto the ground and go feast at their leisure. We connected the same electric fence charger to the top of the feeder and the bottom perch -- way too tall for any birds around our area to stretch across the terminals -- and the squirrels would get a good shock, fall off onto the ground, sit there about 10 seconds and go away. They're smart, didn't take long to learn not to hang from our feeders.

I read some comments, anyone who have had rat issues no doubt get a perverse pleasure seeing rats eradicated. But, for someone who needs to eradicate vermin, the kill videos are of no use. I have a concept, and I will show it in action once I get it working. It doesn't need to kill, just temporarily incapacitate. It can't discharge and have to be charged the next day. I have a great capacitor story. We were dismantling a pole top capacitor bank, (3 phase 12,000 volts), at the Levi's manufacturing site downtown San Francisco in the '80s. A load break hot stick was supposed to be used, but boys will be boys, we used a standard switch stick opening cut outs. The first phase when it opened Drew an arc as big around as a Foster's beer can, and it snaked like a dragon. There was a loud hum as it opened, and it let out a loud bang like a cannon going off. The second phase was like the first, maybe slightly smaller, and the third phase didn't even make an arc. We then waited for the capacitor to equalize, shorted it out to be sure it was dead, rigged it with the hard line from a line truck, unbolted it and let it to the ground.

A good rat is a dead rat that has not been poisoned,. That way it will NOT harm any other animal that eats it afterwards. You can still feed the dead rat to coyotes, possums or skunks and keep poison out of the food chain. I think it's a great trap!👍

@@electronicsNmore My guess is the most likely ingress/egress is gaps in concrete roof tiles. Taking care of that is on my list. I've eliminated the rats that had been frequenting the framing area (not a human-accessible attic), and am now battling them in the yard to try and keep the numbers down. Anyway, if you ever have the time to work out your design schematic, I'd be very grateful. Sorry about the idiot youtube commenters. It's common throughout youtube, no matter the subject area. It's why I seldom read very far into comments sections any more.

Nice build. Have you killed anything with it yet? Also , are you using a full wave bridge rectifier on the output of the boost converter? (the more proper term for a joule thief) It is probably a good idea to add protection to the 18650 battery so that you do not discharge it over 3V. Also, make sure not to charge it over 4.20 volts, lipos hate it when they are overcharged. By allowing the voltage to get lower than that, you risk damaging it. Also, have you considered using a quad comparator package to make a LED charge indicator? I showed a version of this using op amps instead in my tutorial on series and parallel circuits!
@electronicsNmore
@electronicsNmore 9 жыл бұрын
Yes, a couple rats. Not a full wave, just a single uf4007 diode on one leg of the output. More efficient if I did use a full wave. The voltage indicator was made years ago when I did not have all my parts at hand. It is crude, but definitely serves its purpose. The battery voltage cannot rise above 4.18V, but I can go lower than 3v. :-) You can buy small PC boards for single Li-Ion batteries for very little money on Ebay.
@power-max
@power-max 9 жыл бұрын
electronicsNmore Did you actually construct the charging circuitry for the 18650? You state it is 300mA, I assume you have made a simple current mirror or current source/sink with a 4.18V zener diode or similar across the battery or something along those lines, if you actually made it. Thats probably the direction I would have gone for small lipos. Larger ones, like 18650's, I would have probably took the guts out of el cheapo charger.

@power-max
@power-max 9 жыл бұрын
Thats seems like a far better solution then my hacked solution, lol, although the current limiting on it seems a bit crude! Seems like a low side NPN transistor, when it 'sees' more than 0.6V on the base, relative to the emitter, it pulls the LED and the adj pin on the regulator low, and causes the current to be limited. I would have prefered an op amp with higher gain and tighter regulation to do the same thing on the high side, but I can see that working fine. (Especially if you are charging at a 0.5C nominal or less.) What you said near the end about the possibility of cells becoming unbalanced, thats why when it come to the huge >1KW Lipo batteries used for drones, that they have a 'balance' connector. It make sure that each and every cell in series gets equal charge, so that way all of them are stressed equally and one does not overcharge or undercharge.

Personally,I prefer to make the voltage limit on Li-Ion cells closer to 4.0V. I'll take the slight loss of capacity,in favor of a safer (both to you,and the cell) circuit. Also,be careful even after you discharge the caps,they have a 'memory' effect,and can 'spontaneously charge' themselves.(not really,but it appears that way.) This is caused by 'dielectric absorption'.

Good info, thanks! Where can we get the schematic for this circuit? "One shot then manual reload" needs improvement. The circuit can be designed to reload using relays and mechanical devices, then you would have the perfect mousetrap literally. !!$$$$$$$ That, and a climb system where the bait is at the top of a pyramid is a better option. Animal touches a smooth plate found there, and rolls down the incline(grids allow muscles in spasm to hold on). No carcas accumulation at the critical circuit area. You would now have a device that can be left for the weekend, and it will definitely put a dent in the rodent populationto boot.

How much current does it take to kill the rat? It is funny as a kid i tried a similar project with with just voltage from a transformer hooked to feeding plates just like you have, when it stands on the bottom it gets shocked when it goes to eat from the second plate, but my experiment indeed shocked the rat, but i came in to see, and it was gone, with burn marks where its feet was in the bottom plate(i used old pizza pan for bottom plate). It didn't kill it, i seen the shape of its feet in the pizza pan. lol

I have seen rats killed by 120V/240v in the past. When I repaired AC condensing units, and inside electric panels. Some rats are really tough to kill, and they are very smart. If the current flows from a wet mouth to feet, they are usually done. Nothing is 100%. I really don't like killing them, because I had pet Gerbils as a kid, but they can be very destructive and cost you a lot of money. So I am forced to kill them.

i mean i would use your existing circuit but replace the toroid with the transformer out of a 9 -240 wall adapter. in theory they would be the same but the winding's would be fixed so would have to increase input voltage or a voltage doubler on the out put to get higher voltage

I did a flashing light circuit with an SCR so i was planing in use that in a voltage multiplier but you now better to calculate the current and timing i bet alot of people look to put toguether their own system since you cannot regulate the pulses or current in those industrial ones.
