Nice video! It should be mentioned that as you point out the places to check you're touching the probe tip to the surface. This isn't recommended and will set off false alarms. Try to avoid occluding the tip when checking for leaks.

This unit can and will set off false alarms, so you need to be careful, and triple check everything.

When i touch the tip, it beeps. When i turn on the blower of my AC, it beeps. Even if it's a brand new evaporator, it beeps.
@electronicsNmore2 жыл бұрын
High humidity conditions can cause that, or a loose tip. If the tip is dirty, you can try cleaning it using a couple blasts of non-chlorinated brake parts cleaner.
@KurtBarcelona2 жыл бұрын
@@electronicsNmore I also used this in my dads car. Perfectly normal AC but still beeps at random times. Weird. how'd you know if it's a dirty sensor? No debris found in mine. I just used it a couple of times but I'll spray the tip with a maf sensor cleaner. And if high humidity can cause it to beep then I'm in a wrong place. Humidity goes up from 60 percent to 80 percent. I live in the tropics. Probably not use this as a diagnostic tool
@electronicsNmore2 жыл бұрын
@@KurtBarcelona I mean very high humidity, where your skin feels clammy. You have to realize that this is a VERY low cost tester, so it won't be perfect. If you want to avoid false triggering, then you'd need a much higher priced unit.

Thanks for the video, I just bought one. I've had a yellow jacket, 2 TIFs, and a Harbor Fright(growler). The TIFs I had didn't work very well with 134a although they were great with 12. Also the tips clogged easily. I could set the Harbor Fright one off by sticking it in my ear. But it worked ok. Can't wait to try the new one.

A detection from the vents does not automatically mean a leak at the evaporator... It's quite likely, but also the leak could be from under the hood, and following the path of drawn in air into the system and out of the vents to the cab.....

My exact model stopped sensing. I've read that too much gas or liquids can damage the sensor. Mine stopped after using on top gas stove. I'll try cleaning with alcohol. Where can I get new tips?
@electronicsNmore3 жыл бұрын
Sounds like a damaged sensing tip for sure. The tip wasn't made for propane, natural gas, etc. Try using non-chlorinated brake parts cleaner spray on the sensing element. To be honest, it's cheaper to buy a new unit for $11.50. Thanks for watching!

@@electronicsNmore If you open it up, there is a little blue multi turn trimpot. I bought a brand new one and found out that the tips both worked. Adjusted the trimpot in both units and now they both detect propane and butane instantly. Go into that trimpot and you can make your detector super sensitive. Awesome unit for $20

Off topic somewhat but thought this would be OK in the automotive folder: Clearly you research and test tools before recommending them. With that in mind, was just wondering what you use for an oscilloscope in automotive diagnostics. I'm betting its something that works well, is at least two channels and didn't need a mortgage to purchase.

I bought two of these for the shop for automotive HVAC service. They're useless due to false positives. It's like a randomizer gag gift. Yes, it will detect refrigerant when put within the vicinity of refrigerant, but it will also detect refrigerant everywhere else, in places there is no refrigerant leak. So, you pull it away from the area, to see if it stops beeping, but it continues to beep until you turn it off and on. Then you go back to the same spot and it's silent. You turn the sensitivity down, but it finds nothing, even when you crack open a keg of refrigerant and stick its nose right at the end of the hose. I gave it a try on my refrigerator. I know there's a leak. Again, it just randomly beeped everywhere.
@electronicsNmore3 жыл бұрын
You need a very clean atmosphere for it to work properly, that I agree with. You can't expect the same performance as my MAC for only 11 bucks.

Why does moisture give it a false reading? When I put the detector close to my hand it goes off, along with when I put it to the mouth of a water bottle with water in it (without touching).

I just tested mine over water and my hand, and got no detection. Breathing on the end was detected. You could have a faulty unit. You also have to keep in mind that this is a very inexpensive tester.

Mine works fine to this day. Either the tip is faulty, or you destroyed it by detecting something at a high level that it wasn't designed for. BTW, you can't expect much for 11 bucks. Lol

@@electronicsNmore I replaced it 5 times with the same results. By then it wasn't funny anymore. You couldn't even move them one inch and they would alarm at #1 sensitivity. Finally, I bought an inficon unit. Zero problems. And yes you get what you pay for. Buy cheap get cheap.
