electronicsNmore Hello, thank you for an excellent video. I'm however having a weird microwave issue and 3 techs have been unable to help. The whole microwave (lights, display, power ) will go off, come back on randomly days later and run until it blows fuse. Changed cap, magnetron, door switches, really only thing left is control board. Any insight? Thank you. Scott

Amazing tutorial thank you! Before l order the tools... my combi oven sounds like it contains a crazy hamster on a rattling metal wheel since my son slammed its door (sent to bed with no supper!) I read about 300 questions but cant find my problem though some mention slammed doors. Im hoping you could suggest a starting point rather than my tackling any tasks unnecessarily as this oven is really heavy and cumbersome? Love your voice in the vids too by the way :)

My microwave quit heating anything so I went through the parts and found a bad thermal and diode. I replaced both, plugged it in and immediately the fan ran on a very low speed, almost as if it was sensing heat (like an oven on under it). It's only 45 degrees in my garage so it shouldn't come on. Also, it still wouldn't heat. Checked the two parts I replaced and found the diode was bad again. Any suggestions what would be causing this? I followed your video and found nothing else seeming to be bad with it.

Update: I replaced all three parts you explained. Magnetron was burned at the connector but tested good, diode was the issue. I purchased a capacitor and diode together and old capacitor was in spec but new capacitor was better in spec. Microwave is much quieter and heats quicker on foods. Thank you for your videos and giving me the confidence to do this. $70 new parts not used. Praying for 10 more years now. 😆

I was a microwave engineer and found this video absolutely correct. I would like to add that keeping the inside of the oven clean is essential. A splash of gravy or food left inside will carry on cooking and eventually glow and burn through the paint to expose bare metal which will eventually destroy the machine.

I started in the microwave business back when Litton first entered the retail market I believe in the early 1970's. While not a defect or a repair problem I want to point out the most common error I see people making virtually all the time, this mistake is widespread on videos on KZbin. When consumer microwaves first came out the manufacturers spent millions trying to get the most even 'pattern', or distribution of microwaves in the cooking area. Then some companies gave up and started putting turntables in their microwaves, just about all followed fairly quickly. The idea was to move the food around instead of the microwaves themselves, these days they don't seem to even try to make them cook evenly, depending on the turntable to take care of it. Now the important part: I see people put something in the microwave and put it in the center of the turntable, DON'T DO THAT! The center doesn't move around, it sits there in the same spot, if you have a hot spot or cold spot, its going to be in the center of the turntable. If you have a single small item, a donut, a cup of coffee etc, put it towards the edge, never put anything in the middle if you can avoid it since it defeats the entire purpose of the turntable. Sometimes you have a larger item and you can't avoid the center, but usually in that case you can take it out and change what part is in the center for the rest of the cooking. Another handy tip, if heating up something that takes up a lot of room on the plate, arrange the food around the edges of the plate, leaving the center empty and put that empty spot in the middle, its like you are making it in a ring mold, like a cake with a hole in the middle. In all the years I was in the business I sponsored and attended many microwave cooking schools, this is the #1 handiest tip and most common error when I see someone using a microwave.

Makes sense not to put things in the middle of a turntable-based oven. If I may add my two cents, I have an Amana RR-800 and I had to do a little repair on it a few years ago. Specifically, the stirring antenna wasn't spinning, so obviously the cooking action wasn't what it should have been. Thought it could be a faulty stirring motor, but it turned out that it didn't use a motor for the antenna at all. The foam lining inside the oven was being used to help direct airflow from the blower in a way that not only kept the magetron cool but also got the antenna to spin. Over the years, that foam deteriorated and was permitting too much airflow to leak out. Replaced the rotted foam with foam weatherstripping from the hardware store and it worked to restore the stirring action.

Thank you for the great and comprehensive video! I'd like to share my small experience with others. The fuse in my ten years old AEG Micromat microwave blew up after I heated a cup of coffee and opened the oven door with a rush movement. (At the same moment a 16A automatic switch triggered in the supply line too). Luckily, I found in the internet a service bulletin for AEG/Electrolux microwaves which states: "The fuse may operate (blow) as a result of other component failures within the product but in some cases it may also be possible for the fuse to blow as a result of opening the door via the open button." Exactly this happened by me. I replaced the fuse and the oven is sound again.

This video is extremely helpful. For those of us with combo microwave/convection wall ovens, being able to troubleshoot and repair saves hundreds in repair bills. I had a voltage spike the resulted in two blown fuses -- still not sure how fuses in series both blow, but....in any event this video gave me the info and confidence to tackle the problem. As a result of disassembling the unit to access the fuses I accidentally loosened a wire on the control panel. Back to this video....helped me find the problem. I haven't been through all your videos, but maybe at some point you could walk through reading the technical schematic for one of these things. Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge.

Many thanks for the detailed troubleshooting guide! In my case the problem was that one the connections between the magnetron and its cables developed a dark layer of corrosion or burn (probably high transient resistance caused by poor connection) over the years, which finally lead to complete open circuit right before the magnetron. Mechanically cleaning the developed residue from the connections and making the cable's connector terminal tighter with pliers solved the malfunction.

Also check the resistance of the magnetron antenna (cylindrical tube at base with output aperture) to the case. It should read very low (fraction of ohm) just like between the terminals. If it reads high, you may have a bad magnetron even if the other resistance readings look ok. I had one that measured at 35 ohms. All other measurements were normal.

Thanks for the video! Thoroughly done. One common problem is when there is a terrible screaming and grating noise and then it's gone. Later everything's fine! Sometimes, cleaning the fans shaft seems to have done the trick but later this becomes more frequent and all hell breaks out. All other tests being done, this problem remains and also there's no heating. The magnets are also not cracked! This happens when the magnet/s are freewheeling at their centres, whereas they should be locked. Don't try ANY glues! In a tactile way, try rotating both magnets and even if one is free, you will have to replace the magnetron! Check that the replacements magnets are locked! The replacement magnetron could be ever so slightly larger. Perhaps a design upgrade to help heat dissipation. So tighten the perforated cage tabs and bend the supporting ledge. Don't forget that you will have to include the rubber gasket or make a new one, before re attaching. Be satisfied that the magnetron has nicely clicked into position and secured! There could be some buzzing sound which will subside as the cage sides held together only with metal tabs, should later stabilize after heating/cooling.

Note: When you discharge the capacitor - which he does early on in the video - just attaching the wire to somewhere on the chassis might not be enough. The chassis needs to be grounded to truely discharge the cap. If you have a grounded wall outlet, plug the microwave back into the outlet, and then the chassis will be grounded for proper cap discharge. DO NOT TURN THE MICROWAVE ON! And keep in mind, when plugged into the wall outlet, there will be live components within the unit. Be careful what you're touching.

@Sheri Kinard You still have not allowed others to reply. Every microwave oven is different, but the all operate the same way. You may also have an inverter microwave. Usually only one ceramic buss fuse, but if you see 3, then you have 3. I suggest you perform a Google search for your microwave oven model # to get more details. If you don't know what your doing, then I recommend you do not try repairing your microwave. It could be very dangerous.

***** The microwaves are directed into the oven cavity. The screen door has mesh which does not allow the microwaves to pass through. Just stand back and you will be fine.

Thank you so much for this. I already replaced the unit (due to lack of time to do the full diagnostic) but I finally hauled the old unit out and went through the whole process. I already knew the HV fuse was blown, but when it still didn't work your video helped me narrow it down to the HV diode. I was ready to toss the (very nice Samsung) microwave oven in the trash. Of course what makes it harder is that your average DIY multimeter does not ho up high enough to test the output of the transformer. Otherwise, it'd probably be fairly easy to see that the voltage is not rising to proper levels :-)

Question, every thing on my microwave seems to work fine but as soon as it is plugged in the fan runs and won't shut off. Does not matter whether is open or closed same thing happens . Tested door switches, work fine. Tested continuity of wires no problem there, any ideas? Only way to shut fan off is to pull the plug. Thanks , Paul ... Great video!

Excellent video. Just resurrected my large, expensive, over the range Whirlpool microwave oven. I verified all of the parts per your video, but I found that someone had previously tweaked the socket for the heavy amp fuse so the power for the transformer was intermittent. As you mention , the magnetron test is not reliable, It is so unreliable actually that I have NEVER found a defective magnetron that did not pass these tests, If you have 120V coming into the primary of the transformer while running the microwave oven , then the problem is either in the Transformer, Diode, Capacitor or Megnetron, Perform static tests on the first 3 and if they pass then change the magnetron,

My Fluke digial meter has a diode check setting. I verified that the diode check setting worked by tesing a few brand new low voltage diodes I had on hand. They tested good, so I assumed my HV diode was bad. But, the new diodes I recieved tested bad on arrival. So, I grabbed a 9Volt battery and checked to see if voltage floweed through them as expected, 0 volts with the diode one way, and some voltage the other. So, the HV diodes are actually good, and something else is wrong with my Microwave. I'll have to dig into it more. But, I still like your video, because it allowed me to understand how all the components work together and how to test each.

I begin with knowing about the microwave repair. I have two out of order microwaves ,one is Samsung the other is sharp. I solved the problems by buying a new ones. Until I had seen your videos. This wakes me up to try to find the problem and solved them . The Samsung microwave problem is the short circuit of the microswitch which is the monitor switch . I try to buy the new one but it cannot fix in the same place so I repair it , It works. The sharp microwave problem is suspected to be the magnetron itself. Thank you very much.

Great video. My Goldstar Microwave Oven stopped heating its contents. It passed all the tests given here, and it was only after watching another KZbin Video that I realised that another way to identify a faulty Magnetron is by looking at the colour of the antenna. Mine was brown, while the antenna on the replacement I bought was silver. Both had the same resistance, and neither had cracked magnets or leakage to earth. But after fitting the replacement Magnetron, the Microwave Oven worked fine.

This is the first video I've found on how to discharge a microwave before fixing it. Cool! I'm a "Jane of all trades", and usually fix everything, but even after watching this I'm still too chicken to try it. Since I can't afford a repairman I guess we'll just keep looking at the space waster over the stove until I can muster up the courage! (I have a voltage meter but not sure how to use that either...) Everything works except the heating part...

Hi Doug, just to follow up ... I also purchased a 1G or 1,000M ohm resistor and the meter was able to display a value of 915M ohms for it. So, I have seen the meter show decent results for 1) the diode in one direction ... 39M ohms as shown in the video provided earlier , and 2) good values for a 100M ohm, 500M ohm (both in another video) and 1,000M ohm resistor. So, it seems reasonable to believe that when the meter is set to 2,000M ohms and we try to measure the resistance of the diode in the “opposite direction” from the first measurement, when the meter shows OL it is telling us the truth. This implies that the notion that the diode should display a resistance somewhere between 180 and 300 M ohms (slightly different values were described across two of your excellent videos) may not be correct for all HV diodes. I’ll check back to see if you have any other ideas.
