Very nice. The gold leaf adds a nice contrast to the dark finish. Definitely a conversation piece.

One word Sam. Outstanding!!! Thank you for sharing. Remember, when the wood goes around, the face shield goes down.🙂🙂

Really cool and really like the way it turned out. I have never tried sea urchin but now want to give it a try. Thank you for sharing.

Beautifully turned and presented Sam. You are a real artist. Watching you turn a finial is like watching Richard turning thin wall. I have to hold my breath. I have tried finials but keep on snapping them as I'm too heavy handed. I have learned a lot from your videos and hope to learn a lot more.😃

I think the key to turning a finial is using the right tools. I never use a skew chisel. What happens with a skew is the wood rides up on the cutting edge? It makes it very difficult to turn. I do scrape with some sort of a gouge. Just practice Sam.

nicely done Sam, came out very elegant.

Wow! I've not seen an urchin with the gold leaf and yours is beautiful! Thank you for sharing Sam! Does Billings have a festival of trees that your club participates in? Have a safe and fun trip! Take care, Dave

I have not heard of Billings has a festival of trees. Our main club fundraiser is for a women’s shelter downtown. It’s called souper bowls. We make bowls and they have a big event where they make soup and give away a bowl of some sort. It’s pretty cool. It takes place right around footballs Super Bowl

Very nice! I've been making these for more than 5 years and find that making thin finials difficult after switching from making bowls - the muscle memory needs retraining for thin and light cuts. I make both the sputnick and green urchins. For the small green urchins, I make a longer finial that ends at about a wooden pencil lead in thickness. I applied gold leaf to a few, but find that the bums break through the leaf and the time required doesn't seem to be worth the result. Most of mine go as gifts.

The gold leaf is awesome. I find for less than $2 for an ornament stand, it is not worth my time making one. A stand sure adds value with an ornament gift or a craft sale.

I love these sea urchin bobbles. Did you add any weight to the base piece or was the mesquite heavy (dense) enough to hold the ornament?
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER Жыл бұрын
I actually did add a little bit of weight. I drilled out the base and put some washers in it.

Beautiful, always a pleasure to see you work. How do you package them for shipping?
@WYOMINGWOODTURNERАй бұрын
What I would do is put the ornament in a smaller box. With lots of packing and then put that box inside of a larger one. I do this with some of my more delicate pieces. Sam
@tominhustler Жыл бұрын
why did you not glue the finial to the sea urchin, was it so if a finial broke that it could be taken apart and fixed easier
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER Жыл бұрын
Actually you named a really good reason for doing it like that. But gluing it can make a mess., This is not my original technique. But i feel it is verysecure. Just drill out the finial parts at the right time on the lathe, then measure..... Sam
