How to Turn a Sea Urchin Christmas Ornament

I was given this urchin when I first got into woodturning. Twelve years before I decided what to do with it. Inspired by one I saw on Pinterest.

Very nice ornament. I'd not seen a birdhouse ornament made out of a sea urchin shell before. Thank you for expanding my horizons! Suggestion: It's easier to fit the finials into the ornament if you sand the top and bottom holes round. Make a wooden cone and then glue some strips of sandpaper along the length of the cone. You can then use the cone, mounted in the headstock of your lathe, to sand the top and bottom holes round. Works like a charm. I don't recall where I first saw this idea, or I'd give them credit.

Nice job Mike. I would drill the hole for the bird house first in case the shell brakes then you don’t have to struggle trying to save the finial and icicle. Enjoy your videos, keep them coming.

I found that a product called Shoe Goo works great for gap filling glue applications where dissimilar surfaces present a challenge. Sticks like poop to wool blanket, and stays rubbery when cured, it doesn't take much. I like the skewer method too and use it often thanks.

I remember using shoe glue on my running shoes back when I could still run a 10K! That has been a few years.

If you click on the search field on my channel page (look for the magnifying glass under the hannel art) you can search on a key word. Enter top and you should be able to find the video I did on tops. Likewise you can search on carbide and get thevdieo I did on carbide tools.

A backer board can all but eliminate but for smalll turnings drill early.

Mike, you added a note on the screen about not trying something on video that you have not tried before. I disagree. It shows what not to do and gives a great example for others not to follow. I'd much rather see it for myself then to be told about it. Shows that even the experts aren't perfect. Nice ornament. Great job. Really enjoy learning from your videos.

diy dark matter sent me over here I have a laser I've never used and I am trying to understand what to do and how to do it. Do you have any videos on how to hold your tools techniques for holding your tools methods depending on the tool?
