The thing with resin. The sensitivity can happen over time. The only time the smell bothered me, is when I put the printer into my basement bathroom where I have a powerful exhaust fan. I forgot to turn the fan on, within seconds of walking into the room, I knew I didn't feel right. Similarly, my boss became sensitive to CA glue after years of making model planes; he'll break out in a rash if near curing CA. I'd side on caution, as you don't want to become sensitive to it. It'll ruin the joy in it.
@JohnJones-oy3md5 жыл бұрын
Very true - exposure can be cumulative. When I worked with composites I stopped using a respirator when switching from polyester to epoxy resins, as the epoxy barely had a smell at all. After a while I developed an anaphylactic type reaction to it. Now, years later, I just need to get a whiff of the stuff and you'd think I was hit in the face with bear spray. Protect your eyes, lungs, and skin.

Thanks for the update. If you're looking for video ideas, I'd love to learn more about the dimensional accuracy of resin prints. It seems most people use these printers for figures and such where that isn't terribly important, but someone in your line of work relies on accuracy. I've heard of people having issues with warping/shrinkage when curing. Some of the resin specification mention up to 6% shrinkage. Wondering if it's really possible to make parts that are very accurate in size, especially if they have to mate with existing parts (parts with threads, jigs, etc). Thanks again for these updates. When I pull the trigger on the Elegoo/supplies, I'll be sure to use your links.

As far as i am aware all resin shrinks slightly. Just increase model size by the percentage of shrinkage... its really a non issue with 3d printing.

Never ever use paper to clean lenses or other stuff that needs to be scratch free and clear. However tiny, the wood cells paper is made off are still hard enough to scratch. That's why you get a cleaning cloth with a pair off glasses.
@watchesandjewelry5 жыл бұрын
Yes. I get that. Here has been my experience. After spending a month cleaning with non abrasive clothes, I found no difference in fep film scratching as the fep film slowed discolored due to resin and uv exposure. With that in mind, I consider fep just another consumable to be replaced as needed. I’m sure you are correct that paper products are not good for the fep film however for me it just means adding a supply to my order. With the longer exposure times required for castable resins it will degrade anyhow. Let me know your methods and if it works for me, that would be wonderful.

I noticed you did not have any tape under the bath. I have watched some people who advise that you place some tape under the bath of these printers so there is a small clearance between the bath and the screen plate. This is supposed to allow air out from under the plate as the build plate comes down while printing.
@Zeriel004 жыл бұрын
1.) How does air come out from under the plate if there's FEP and resin blocking the way? 2.) How does this help exactly? Not critizising I'm just curious.
@watchesandjewelry4 жыл бұрын
Pressure and leverage. The build plate leaves a gap of resin between the plate and fep film. All done electronically

Would these parts you make stand up to a plating deburring such as what you use to recondition brass casings for ammunition? I've been watching the resin/FDM machines and of course the resin always come out better, but I would think either process would benefit from a deburring shaker machine. Great video. Depends on the detail you wish to get. Casting results however depend greatly on the proper burnout of your model within the investment. Since I prefer the detail of resin printers I will stick with them. If you cast brass, lead or other soft metals than you could even get away with cheaper investment plaster however I don’t recommend it.

Hey..i noticed that the UV curing lamp is rated at 365nm, while all of the resins and printer outputs seem to be aimed for 405nm..is this slight difference noticeably effective in curing results?
@watchesandjewelry4 жыл бұрын
The lamp I use works fine. You will have to leave prints in longer. I keep my regular resin prints in for 10 minutes and castable prints for 15 to 20
@sjm43064 жыл бұрын
LEDs have a spectrum with the rated wavelength being the peak. So even a 365nm LED will have some emission at 405nm. Likewise the resin will cure outside of it's rated wavelength, just possibly not as quickly.

@Peter Grande Is there a danger in printing UV curing resins next to a window, in a room with so much reflecting outdoor sun light...?
@watchesandjewelry4 жыл бұрын
Good question. My printers are located in a room with a window. To be honest I have not seen a difference in printing next to that window. However I tend to cover my mars printer. My epax has a solid cover. I would say that you would probably be fine but cover with a towel if you are worried about it. My windows do not get direct sun light. If your do, then I would suggest moving the printer to a place where it does not get direct sunlight.

One more thought. If you have an elegoo Mars and set the test pattern on, can you see the pattern with the Mars lid on? If not then up light is not likely to get to your printed model.

Regular resin will not burn away like castable resin. It actually burns more like plastic then melting as wax would

It worked for me. I have a video covering that topic briefly in a video on ifun castable resin. I used 80 grit sand paper and used heavy support posts. Also, ifun resin has a wax content in it and requires longer layer cure times as do most jewelry castable resins. So I’ve never pre-primes the build plate.
