I want to make a note about washing since nobody is talking about this. My first print was a large skull, it failed due to not enough resin in the vat so I did break tests with the printed 3/4. After a short wash and some curing it held up remarkably well for resin, surviving being thrown to the ceiling and landing on my Linoleum kitchen floor without damage several times. Then later I noticed most of my finished prints were very brittle, one of them crumbling with little force after curing and being limp and squishable before final cure. I did some thorough testing and long story short, do not leave the resin in a water bath for more than 2-3 minutes, after 5 in the ultrasonic it is markedly weaker and after 40 the cured print crumbles like a cookie. I'm not sure if it is absorbing water/minerals or if something is leaching out, but overwash and you will be sad. Washed briefly and the resin is surprisingly strong. I also tested air cure vs water cure, and while the water cured resin was slightly softer/more-brittle (most noticeably in thin supports), the difference was nowhere near as much as 3 vs 25 min cleaning. It looks like the resin is most vulnerable in it's half cured state right off the printer, if your UV oven is strong enough to cure prints quickly, you can probably still use a water bath if you want.

You should be using the basket insert in your ultrasonic. The idea is that the water or cleaning fluid is being vibrated and the model is not. the interaction between them creates the cleaning action and bubbles around the still model. If the model is sitting on the bottom and also vibrating the difference between the water and the model will be less and it will result in less effective cleaning.

I've mentioned this on another KZbinrs video on the elegoo mars. But chitubox doesn't let you know when a thumb drive is full. If there isn't enough space to store a sliced model, it will simply save up to the point the drive it full and you will end up with a model that prints till the sliced layers end and the printer will just freeze at that level. I was lrinting something solid that was a 12 hour print. About 6 hours in it just froze up. I was asleep while printing and woke up to a failed print. Cleared it off the build plate and just started it again to come back and find the same result. It wasn't till I decided to reslice the model that I discovered the drive was full.

(Edit) Reading Alpha Cat's comment, if you have a large enough water tight container to let the water evaporate that will be even better.

Drop the water in the sun in a container.. the resin doesn't go into a solution as it does with alcohol, so it can cure solid in the sun and settles to the bottom. @jondoe2303 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. Always the chance of something getting printed wrong and falling off into the tank. Then not catching it when you take your minis off. It could then damage the machine or cause miss prints. But with that being said in just my experience I go right to printing another model. I always check to see if I had any fails. And if I do then I'll strain it back into the bottle and clean out my tank. Or just make sure I take anything out that failed and feel around in the tank with gloved fingers. If I feel like I missed anything I will clean the tank. Though more often its right back to printing, no cleaning. Use best judgement when doing it. Also if your not going to be printing anything out for a day or two strain the resin back into the bottle. Don't just let it sit inside the vat. I'd also recommend getting rubber dishwashing gloves instead of buying boxes of latex gloves. And get a large silicon mat. It helps with not making a mess on surfaces and you can rest your build plate on it while taking off prints. I've only used water washable resin and love it. I mostly print out wargame and table top miniatures and a few larger things every now and then. I hope you really enjoy getting into resin printing. Its so much fun.

@infernaldaedra5 жыл бұрын
Depends on how well ventilated and if you notice any irritation or smell. Most of these printers are quite small so I doubt it will be any issue if the room is well ventilated
@zemerick5 жыл бұрын
Some big questions would be: Do you have a fan for the window, where do you sit relative to the 2 ( such as if you are between the printer and window ), and how much actual printing you do. Basically, think of the printer as a smoker. ( Actually, cigarette smoke is probably worse...but that says more about how bad that actually is, and not much about the resin. ) If the printer is between you and the window, which has an exhaust fan, and you're only printing occasionally, you'll likely be fine. ( Note: Lots of health problems are probabilistic. You could always be the unlucky person that gets sick off of a very small exposure, while your next door neighbor practically swims in the stuff and is fine. Yay chance. )
@MrDevilFlash5 жыл бұрын
@@zemerick Well, no exhausting fan on my window. The printer is around 2.5 meters in my back on the right (in a corner), my window around 1.5 meter on my right. I'm not disturbed by the smell and doesn't feel bad when it prints. Still use a respirator when I work on the printer or the print and make a full refresh of the air after a print.
@zemerick5 жыл бұрын
@@MrDevilFlash Personally, I would get a box fan and use that to make sure the air flows from the printer, out of the window. Then, of course, keep on eye on yourself if you start to show any unusual symptoms, and adjust as needed. Disclaimer, I'm slightly on the less cautious side versus many. Others would certainly say you should not be in the same room as it during printing. Oh, it does matter what specific resin you use though. I haven't seen the MSDS for the water washable, but I would personally suspect it is a bit worse actually. The water washable means it is water soluble: IE, it would probably be absorbed by the mucus inside your respiratory system more easily, giving it a higher reaction rate. This is 100% guess though. Be aware that each different type of resin, even just different brands, can be dramatically different. The resins are currently a huge source of innovation, and are not at all standardized. So, 1 could be quite safe, while another highly toxic.

Hi, i want to try this resin in my anycubic. What settings are you using with it. I only have used the tranparent green with great results.

As someone who works with paint's and chemicals, I understand the risks but I am completely new to resin 3D printing. My first resin printer will be arriving in 2 days. How do you deal with the water with disolved resin it? Can you cure the resin in the water by say leaving it out in the sun and then filter out the bits so you can dispose of the water or do you leave it to evaporate and then clean out the sludge?
@Trollioli4 жыл бұрын
Jeez this is great during the lock down. 90% Iso is super expensive now. Being able to use water would save a lot of money. My question is does this resin work with other printers like the creality?

I appreciate the rant. Because there are people out there who will wash this in the sink, 100% sure. So it can't be reiterated enough.

Well, washing in the sink isn't the issue. It's what you do with it after:) But yea, even Elegoo made a post on their twitter about making sure to properly handle the dirty water.

Does the Water washable resin work with the Phenom Noir or L? ...or other large printers? I got an email back from Epax saying that water washable resin doesn't work in their larger printers because there is too much background radiation from the large screens.

Hi, Update on water washable resins - a couple of prints I made a few months ago started to liquify, which is not great, apart from the advantages mentioned in the video. Both items were thin sections or hollowed out and the chess piece test prints or smaller solid prints seem to be fine, but it would suggest that the material is inherently unstable and only of any real practical use for casting up in silicone rubber and then throwing away the prints afterwards.

I was using Elegoo water washable resin btw - other brands may be more stable.

Hey, haven't started with resin yet but want to soon. The one question I have is "After you clean the model, be it IPA or water, how do you do dispose of the used cleaning agent?" cant seem to find a clear answer on that.
@slow-moe35185 жыл бұрын
I think the safe way is to cure your container of IPA or water under UV light (so a clear one should work better), then strain it to discard the solids, then discard the liquid in the sink.
@Irish-Dog1375 жыл бұрын
@@slow-moe3518 makes sense. thanks
@zemerick5 жыл бұрын
@@slow-moe3518 Not quite. There will always be resin left in the cleaner, so you shouldn't really run it down the sink. Technically, if you do it rarely enough ( since you can reuse the cleaner for a long time ) and run a good amount of clean water with it to dilute it down, it'll be fine. However, this is more to do with "the poison is in the dose" versus it being a good idea. Andrew: To expand on things, most people have switch to all-purpose cleaners, as they are far less toxic than IPA, cheaper, and are just as good if not better. The green cleaners are the current gold standard, but I wouldn't be surprised if something else is better that just hasn't been tested. The current common choice is Simple Green. After cleaning, you cure the cleaner as well to get the bulk of the resin out, then reuse that cleaner. I have done a few dozen prints, and have yet to need to discard my cleaner.

@PulsefiredGaming5 жыл бұрын
First comment what? Uncle Jessy, if the resin printer masking lcd screen is a consumable, do you think the screens for large format resin printers will be harder to find than the photon/mars/epax screen?
@zemerick5 жыл бұрын
How hard something in general is to find is really hard to answer, but they are basically always at least available at the same time as the launch of the printer. I remember looking into the screen for a large format that launched recently, and they provided it immediately. It was $100 vs. normal ones being about 30-40, and the Mars screen is 20. Sad thing is that screen is one of the main sources of the increased cost for large format, yet these new printers are like $1,500. Good news is Elegoo announced awhile ago that they are working on something bigger. Nothing specific yet, but hopefully they can get prices to drop again.
@UncleJessy5 жыл бұрын
I'm hoping the cost continues to drop and it becomes much more afforable to replace when you need to
@zemerick5 жыл бұрын
@@UncleJessy It certainly would be nice, but I'd much prefer the printer itself be more around $500. As is, you could replace a screen 10-20 times just to match the existing price of large format printers. Add in the lower detail, and the existing crop are kind of lackluster. I would love a bigger print volume, but it just isn't worth it yet IMO. Fingers crossed that it changes soon, and the way things have been moving I would be surprised if it didn't!

I noticed that its probably not UV curable? O just got to use it and when I put it in a curing chamber, I noticed that it doesn't glow under the UV light. How exactly do you cure it after printing? I use the Anycubic photon printer.

You cure it with uv 405nm but cyring times i dont know i think it depends on your uvs i use a naillamp so i do 4 min flip em over amd another 2 then check for wet looking parts. I do think it makes a difference if you dry your prints wet curing seems a bit spotty in my case at least
