I would say both. Been listening to John for almost 40yrs. Love his character, and above his music.

Sadly...he was a drunk. His problem was serious...and it contributed to his death.A genius nonetheless.

He looked pissed yeah and he may well have been off his face but in spite of this he can coax the angels from heaven to send shivers up my spine got to love that man - he was a musical maverick in a world of his own and us ...,,.... just lookin on .... in awe

I'm in love with this. Wish I had seen him live. I was introduced to 'Solid Air' in '94; I then bought 'Sunday's Child' around the same time. I once heard he was playing 'Lochgelly Centre' but he just wasn't my boyfriends cup of tea and I didn't want to go on my own. Years down the line , out of all the music I've listened to he was the only one that stuck to me emotionally (and the Cocteau Twins and other bits here and there) that I started watching him on You Tube and he is my deep favourite ....will order 'the man upstairs' on DVD soon so I can watch in awe and get a bit drunk and have a night in. That boyfriend, (he's now my husband) just leaves me to it when I put him on TV, although on a night out he's come in drunk and serenaded me with 'Gun Money' which was well entertaining.

@@brucebherman Hi Bruce. Lucky you! The boyfriend's my husband now; he's got sketchy taste in music but excellent taste in women. :D

I sang harmonies with John on his album Well Kept Secret, which is the album Gun Money is on. To sing harmony with a brilliant singer who improvised all the time was challenging but amazing. Best Wishes, Lee.

THIS is the great period of his life. He went from sublime to simply genius the closer to the end he got. Magical. Alan Thomson (of course) and Spencer. They cook it up. Fantastic.

Ok, John Martyn has always his incredible voice. But a great period! Car accident with injuries, one cyst on his knee. After, he had been amputated of his leg. He made, with courage and always smiling , his come back. But, l didn't find his voice.
