Elemental is Pixar's latest movie to hit the movie theatres and its something. It is a romance story about different elements, Ember and Wade are our protagonists they are fire and water but they are in love. Pixar and Disney did it again, so we decided to watch it

The reason it got insane popularity was word-of-mouth that the movie was not bad and that it actually had a really touching immigration narrative- since the director based it on his own family’s immigration from Korea, I’m not surprised it’s performing really well there.

Wasn't this success due to the dumb stunt on Twitter where Disney just released a "live reaction" and the people just pretends to enjoy the movie? The one where everybody just goes "ooh ahhh" in the theater, the clearly fake reaction?

ironically, i think its message is shit and if water ppl are supposed to be white i fucking hate it. while yes i grew up with privilege i was still an impoverished kid who was one parental argument away from being homeless. why do they think we all live gilded lives? do they know nothing of the recessions, decline of the middle class and housing market collapse? did they only interact with white people who were wealthy???? have the never seen the diversity that makes up children swathed in CPS fosterhomes? this movie reminded me that their elites paint us with the same color as our elites paint them. i probably have more in common with an average low income korean than this fucking movie producer. and my apologies if he was trying to do something nuanced but he absolutely reinforced it through piss poor allegory that might do more harm than good.

I think using elements as a race allegory was a bad idea. Fire and water don't just mix badly, they outright destroy each other. Also, as alluded to in this video, the air people are represented as clouds, even though clouds are just condensed water vapor. People of two different races can have a kid and there's no biological issue, but that doesn't apply in a world where fire and water people literally kill each other if they interact directly.

I'm pretty sure the air people have a physical and visual form of air but due to them being color white they are mistaken as clouds. As for the race allegory, you realize those relationships do exist in reality. It's not common but due to their condition, they can literally die at the drop of a hat. Besides there are people who seem and unintentionally cause harm despite their best efforts. Even if you don't agree with me on that part, I still believe it works as a mental thing in a physical form.
@RYMAN1321

At first you maybe can understand why they can’t touch, but later , Ember and Wade eventually composed themselves and were able to safely touch. So the whole “elements can’t mix” ended up being not true. There was even a deleted ending that later showed Ember and Wade returning with a steam baby. Also, the worst thing we see happen to the earth people was their hair was burned off. They didn’t die LOL Granted the film *does* say that Element City wasn’t built for fire people.

I never understood how this world would work. Fire could Burn everything, Water would be Evaporated easily and kill Fire, Clouds are made out of water so if Air and Water collide, it can kill water, and Fire could make Earth into Lava or set it on Fire. Lol. Same, tbh I kinda didn’t like how it was basically New York City, but elements instead. Yeah it makes for very creative world building and stuff, but I always felt air and earth were heavily ignored because the story was so focused on Fire and Water. Like, what would happen if a tree wanted to date a fire person?? Or how do clouds even date others?? The movie was really adorable, but I am getting a little sick of humanizing inanimate objects like “what if blank had feelings??”

I do think it’s interesting that every other element is afraid of fire but like… water can snuff out fire, water can drown plants, I imagine air can put out fire and plants can soak up water. But fire is seen as more dangerous. So at least to me, it shows that yes, elements can harm each other, but no one wants to acknowledge how fire can help other elements when each other element had its pros and cons

You’re kind of right about the elements like A video I was watching said with racial allegories done correctly you need 2 creatures/races that aren’t that different from each other, for example frogs and toads (which Amphibia does rather well) because just being near each other or intermixing won’t physically hurt them. In elemental they’re all in a life or death rock paper scissors game where everyone can kill everyone else just by accidentally touching them. Also if she worked the shop her whole life she should be used to people doing stupid shiz. I think her outburst may have been because her parents died and she thought the shop wasn’t running well.

10:06 While they make the comment about the real life implications for Ember visiting the house being like if the floor was made of knives, it's stil equally as weird for the water people because the floor is made of their body/skin. In fact, the train systems are like that, too. The world-building is REALLY weird in this movie!

Actually Kor had it wrong. Obsidian is made when water source or non-source block touches a lava source block. If a lava non-source block touches a water source block, then normal stone is made. And if a water non-source block touches a lava non-source block, cobblestone is made. A cobblestone generator works by having a water non-source block touching a lava non-source block, which makes cobblestone.

Say what you want, but I love this movie. The animation on the fire, water, and air people is amazing and pretty revolutionary, the powers and abilities they have are very creative, I love how they created an entire original language for the fire people, the music is awesome, and I like the arc Ember goes through.

Yeah this movie doesn't really convince me that elements should mix. Ember and wade literally got together because embers fire can make ray of light that's it and that wade is helping her save the fire shop. Yet again another love story where this movie coudve dived into why elements should mix how can they help each other I did not see any of that. More of helping themselves.

Imo, not deserved at all. It’s a carbon cutout of a movie with one of the most overused premises out there. Literally the oldest shit “we’re not supposed to be together because *insert allegory of racism*, but I love you anyway!” + they keep using generational trauma as a character development tool in every second movie these days (off the top of my head “turning red”, “encanto” and that one kraken movie). I AM SO SICK OF IT. Unironically wish this movie would’ve failed because it’s what it deserves since it’s uninventive, safe for a big company to make, and boring af. Also the animation of fire and air people is ugly.

I dunno I actually liked the film. Personally culturally I really sympathize with it. Closing the shop doesnt mean too much, but its the loss of years of hard work and sacrifice. Since my parents are immigrants I feel a lot of pressure to meet their expectations because they went through so much to give me what i have. I do feel to some extent the elemental portion gave a bit too much of the forbidden love trope push and messed with some of the narrative they were going for, but they were probs wanted to stick to the elemental theme. I wonder if it wouldve been better without the element theme tbh, but it was a nice story ^v^

While there is a lot that’s conceptually wrong with this movie… there’s something about Elemental that spoke to me on a very personal level. I went on a journey similar to that of Anton Ego: so ready to hate the film, so expectant for it to be bad. Then suddenly, I was humbled by what I received instead. I’m not an immigrant, but the way it was portrayed really felt as though it came from from someone’s actual experiences. Instead of getting bothered by the characters being elements, I saw them through a human-like perspective. Ember’s yearning to make her family proud, Wade’s flawed, but genuine wanting to help Ember live the life she really wanted, and even Bernie’s desire for Ember to have a bright future are all factors I didn’t think I relate to as hard as I did. I get that not everyone likes Wade. But to me, his emotions were a unique demonstration of empathy. Sometimes, people do tend to get more emotional than others. But that doesn’t make them any less sincere or caring about than others. We don’t know what happened between him and his dad, but from the looks of it, it helped Wade to have an understanding of how much stress and fear Ember had of disappointing her father… and how hard it is being part of a minority that’s mistreated. He didn’t know everything about fire people, but he did make attempts to understand them better (like the “food inspecting” scene, where he ended up liking their food, learning how to pronounce one of their cherished words correctly, apologizing when he realized how much danger he could have put Ember in with the bubble, or making sure Ember was safe in public, and with his family). And… my favorite scene did happen to be the one where Ember and Wade touched each other. Yes, it should not have worked. Yes, it was dangerously risky. But, I think that further supported Ember’s character arc: learning to test her boundaries, and discover possibilities she never considered before. And it wasn’t like it was immediate: it was a slow progression. If anything, it was very touching seeing the relieved, peaceful expression in Ember and Wade’s faces.
