You have to remember these second graders haven’t had a full, normal school year yet. Routines and procedures will take time and practice.

I teach 1st grade, and I’ve learned (at least for the first few weeks) that I need to carve out 5 minutes before any transition to have one person demonstrate what we’re about to do. They are visual!!!! If you demonstrate the right way to do something, and then have 1 volunteer do it the same way you did, then they will all try their best to do what they just saw. And I make a huge deal out of encouraging those who remember. It can also be fun to ask a student “show us the WRONG way to do it!” because they can be silly and we can talk about why we shouldn’t do it that way. It can feel slow at first but you’ll be glad in the future that you really broke it down and made it clear what you expect. Teacher tired is real!!! Keep going Kim!! 💛

I had a similar situation this year. I went from an upper grade back to second. I haven’t taught second for 18 years. The biggest thing I had to do after the first week is 1- go slower, 2- do more activities whole group with lots of guidance. Already they are moving toward more independence. Initially, you may feel like they need to’ try it on their own’ but you will realize that they need to be more supported at the beginning. Good luck. They are so cute and so much fun.

I made the switch from fifth to second last school year but we were virtual all year. I went into this year thinking my classroom management was strong! But it was strong for fifth graders… not second. I can completely relate. Thank you for being real and showing your reflection. It feels good to know I’m not alone! Best of luck Kim, you got this!

Hi there! First of all, you are already doing a phenomenal job! Reflection is everything:). I agree with another comment: don’t expect that they know your expectations for ANYthing. Teach every procedure and practice makes permanent! My favorite tip for transitions is music! I play a particular song, which signifies it’s time to clean-up and come to the carpet. The songs can correspond to a unit, season, or subject. Keep it long enough for students to know what to do, but feel free to change it up when/if it gets old. Miss May @OneFabTeacher has some fantastic ideas for managing littles! Also, calls and responses work for attention signals. The difference between upper and lower grades is real, but you’ve got this! Thanks for all you share!🤗❤️

Ahhh! The shoe tying! I loved it when I had sweet students who didn't mind tying someone's shoes and would volunteer to help. Our librarian actually helped kids learn how to tie their shoes which was awesome-- something she decided to do all on her own. I was going to suggest pictures for what goes in the supply bags/boxes, but you figured that out-- I always projected it and that helped with supply organizing/collecting.
@allicialuck68403 жыл бұрын
Biggest tip I got was to never expect ANYTHING without teaching them first (ex, blowing their nose, holding their pencil, putting away supplies, etc.) Practice practice practice. Then stay really consistent. I sing for transitions and find that helpful! You will rock this! Take it easy on yourself!

You got this and I loved your transparency!!! I felt this way the first two weeks this year and it's already so much better. They'll learn. :)

It will get easier! We are going to be on day 21, and I feel like it was barely last week (day 16) that my little firsties were getting it! I learnEd that every week they need the routines and procedures modeled. Focus on that, and they will get there. I model the wrong way, the right way, and ALWAYS have the students participate in the discussion. Congrats on 2nd!!!! It is the sweet spot!

Kim, chatty or otherwise, love all your vlogs! You are such a sweet and positive person and your second graders are going to adore you:). I just moved from first grade to third. Model everything and have your kids demonstrate the wrong way and then the right way. I used whole brain teaching last year with my firsties and this year as well. I love it! I time them on everything and use the scoreboard. We will introduce super improver soon. The kids are very motivated by that. You are doing a great job and your classroom looks amazing. Thank you for sharing and being real:)

We went back on Sept. 2nd. I was completely remote last year so it was so awesome to have kids in front of me since the pandemic began. They were all so excited to be there and did such a great job starting to know the rules and routines. I’m looking forward to getting the full routine and schedule going in these first few weeks. Have a great year you are going to LOVE 2nd grade.

You are doing great! Give yourself grace too:). Take time to continue teaching routines for several weeks. We didn’t get to stations or small group for 1-2 months. Keep areas of your room “closed” until you are able to teach them how to use your things. This was hard for me at first, but so worth it. Make sure you have some sort of behavior management system where they are earning compliments or kindnesses. Consistency and follow through are key. Second graders are busy and super social, but I know you will love them!

I also moved from upper (4th/5th) to 2nd this year. We finished day 12 on Friday. I could relate to many of the things you talked about in this vlog. I have been reminding myself often to slow down and give myself grace, we will get there. Laying a strong foundation of procedures, routines, expectations, and community are priority number 1. Our 2nd graders are at an amazing, magical age and I have had to stop every once in a while and take in what a wonderful opportunity we have to help these babies transition back into school and grow as learners. You got this!

K-3 is another level of management. This is why I always say that people need to student teach in the lower grades, because those teachers are amazing. You learn so much!!!!Student teaching in first is why I knew from the start that I need to explain and model exactly what I want!!! Do more things whole group until you are sure they can do it independently. Show them and tell them what independent work looks like. Don't assume they can do anything, be very persistent and explicit
@lauriev40823 жыл бұрын
I agree with Katrina, they haven't had a full, normal school year so they have not learned all the skills they normally would by now. Try to word search again next year, some might get frustrated but I don't think very many. Just have high standards, but remember they are still end of first graders in a pandemic year. I have taught all grades from Tk to 5th, except Kindergarten and there is a learning curve with all of them. As my principal used to say, practice, practice, practice those routines, that is the most important thing in the first few weeks. Academics can come after they know the routines, if you do it that way then the academics will go much smoother. A tip for tying shoes. I had the children who knew how to tie volunteer to tie their friends shoes and teach them how to tie during recess. It worked like a charm and they loved helping their friends. Take it one day at a time! Second grade was one of my favorites! Best Wishes in the new school year!

I have been teaching my little preschoolers for two weeks already (this coming week it will be three weeks)…. I absolutely love my kiddos - but I have to go slowly with them (last year I could do soooo much more with the kiddos I had): lining up, bathroom, recess, sitting for circle time, etc….. Practice, practice, practice…. I too come home at night with huge mental ‘to do lists’ not knowing what to do first….. My little bumblebee’s will get there with time (I have to remind myself this daily, hourly, and sometimes by minutes 😂)and your littles will too…… You are an awesome teacher Kim and you are going to build one amazing community in your classroom this year!!!!! And by the way - I love your chatty vlogs as well as your classroom set ups…. I hope you don’t mind if I share the Bible verse I share with my parents in the newsletter I send out in September (I have done this three years in a row now)?….. ❤️ “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” - Jeremiah 29:11

We are on day 17 now. I’m a kindergarten teacher and have taught it for 10 years. Primary grades require very explicit directions and most times you need to move pretty slow when teaching new procedures. You will do great though! I could never imagine teaching a grade level above second, so you’ve been a saint to do that, at least to me!

Friday was our 25th day. Find a shoe tie buddy. Someone who can tie a friends shoe. Make a shoe tie club. They join when they can tie their shoes. Word of advice from teaching the littles....your line order doesn't have to be the same as your number order! I gave numbers just to help me but there were definitely students who could not stand next to each other in line! It is more difficult due to contact tracing for sure!
@shaniabloomfield23333 жыл бұрын
The biggest piece of advice I have for you is give yourself grace and do not assume that your littles know everything. Be prepared to teach them explicitly everything. Remember also that given the situation with COVID, these kiddos have not had the opportunity to build a strong foundation in school and it's all still relatively new. Practice practice practice, and take things extremely slow.
