I’m sitting at my computer right now studying for my teacher certification exam that I take in two weeks 😬 and I see your video pop up…to study or watch your video…the struggle is real! Lol I obviously decided to watch your video, you just give me so much motivation to keep going and start teaching!

For the fridge, you could cut out colorful letters that look like alphabet magnets to spell out whatever label you put on it. Make them a little crooked maybe so it looks like a kid did it.

I went to cosmetology school a few years ago, and we had "smile awards". We colored them and put the recipients name on them and why they made us smile that day. Similar idea. It works for adults too.

This is my first year with tables. For years I had desks turned backwards and used them as tables. It worked just fine. You could have a shelf for each table group with a cubby (where they keep their things) and book box. I also have table caddies and used those for years as well. Book boxes next to their desks work just fine too. Good luck! I know whatever you come up with will be great!

First year, first-grade teacher here: I put my book boxes on a counter in order. In it, I have their reading folders and their bag that they put their "dessert books" in. For my phonics stuff, it is all stored in a ten-drawer cart and then my math toolkits are stored in the three drawer carts. They are grouped by pod for contact tracing purposes. It really helps. I love your videos, btw :)

In your corner with the canopy you could add some outdoor themed wallpaper in the back to help it pop and make it look like a fun place to escape to and read.

Hi Kim! I'm an art elementary teacher and recently found your channel. I'm really enjoying your videos and have been inspired with some fun ideas for my K-5 Art studio. Your book buddies idea inspired me to have a basket or bucket of art buddies! I'm thinking students can borrow a book buddy to "watch" them work on their art project or hold them while they create....I'm also thinking of creating a "fridge" to place the beautiful drawings my students give me throughout the year- however I've found I tend to run out of room and so I'm thinking of having one of my sterlite drawers be a spot for "fridge" paper, the paper will be pre cut maybe 4"x4" and for the label of thinking of typing fridge in font style that looks like those alphabet magnets kids play with on their fridge. Sorry for this long comment, just wanted to share. Thanks for sharing your ideas! I hope you have a great end to your school year and a wonderful summer!!!

I put book boxes on top of low shelves. One student from each table gets the books for lessons. That way, there's a nice transition between lessons, and books that are not needed are put away. The class stays super tidy, it builds independence, etc. I make getting the book boxes a reward, and make sure kids who need to get up more often get involved. One year, I had weekly book distributors. Sometimes, I let kids choose who gets the table's books and any pots of special equipment or manipulatives. Depends on the class and the kids' needs. I also usually have a two-three minute table tidy/book swap/active brain break routine between lessons (if it's not break or lunch time). So if their table is tidy and set up for the next lesson, kids do whatever active brain break I come up with for the day, like jumping jacks or a quick dance. If the class is too hyper, or I need a breather, the brain break is taking out your reading book, which is the only book that they keep in their desk in my class. Or quiet time with some concentration/meditation music. The tidying happens so fast because kids want to join in. And everyone starts the next lesson in a good mood. Hope that helps.

It's my first week of school, so I am behind on watching... I still hope you see this! If your school ends up saying that you can't use the book buddies, ask if you can use them only on Fridays...Like each child can choose one to read with on Friday, take them home and wash them! That might work!

Oh! For the basket you bought from the thrift store, would you ever consider making it into a “treasure chest / goodie box”? I remember being in second grade and always being motivated to behave and do my work because I knew I’d be getting a treat on Fridays haha.

Book boxes at seats last year was terrible! I keep on shelves. Much easier and they don’t fall over and spill every 5 seconds or get kicked if on the floor. I have 3 drawer sterilite bins at each table because chair pockets were not doable. Si far in kinder those work! If you have the chair pouch no need to a bin at desk. I also have caddy’s on tables so that covers supplies. They get one new pencil as they come in each day and it lives in the caddy for the day then goes to not sharp to get sharpened by a kid each day and we start over next day. I love your room btw… I want more black in mine now!!! And your fridge is totally cute.

Your room is looking so great! I love your influential people classroom posters, and if you are ever looking for a suggestion to add to your collection, I would like to recommend Autumn Peltier, who is an Anishinaabe water-rights advocate. She is just 17, but she has addressed the UN and has been nominated for the International Peace Prize in 2017, 2018, and 2019. She was appointed Chief Water Commissioner by the Anishinabek Nation when she was 15!

Are you going to change the height of the desks? Those chairs look so small for the tall desks! The second grades at my school would have a hard time.
@ElementaryInTheMitten3 жыл бұрын
They're already shortened to 2nd grade height. These are the same desks and chairs that were already in this second grade room. If I shortened them at all, students wouldn't have room to fit their legs between the chairs and the desks. 😊
