I'm fascinated by how, when I started with an action line, the figure decidd what it was as I drew. I start with the thought of "I'm drawing a ballerina doing a jette" and the figure said "no you aren't" ended up as a man slipping on a wet floor.

Seriously, you're really good, in my opinion. Like, I can imagine you being one of the designers for the Wicher 3's concept art studio, or at least helping design the Nilfgardian stuff. Great stuff, I aim to be able to naturally draw good poses like you. I quit long ago, felt like my stuff was too stiff and extremely distorted, it was a heap of trash. It still is, but it's slightly better than before, so I aim to continue practising gesture everyday and develop my forms. I don't intend to quit this time, I hope.

@TheAster3
@TheAster3 4 жыл бұрын
@@Maxer110 I improved gradually, but I stopped practising a long time ago because I've pursued architecture design as my main area of focus. Regardless, I' can share some important things that I've learned if you're interested, I hope it helps you to continue working hard and stay fixated on your goals: 1) When they tell you to practice for several hours a week, it is absolutely true. You need to gain experience and a sense of comfortable/familiarise yourself with your craft on a deeper level. 2) Push yourself to achieve things outside of your comfort zone. You have to be in these states in order to grow, and even if you fail you must attempt to learn from your failures. A skill to develop with failure is being able to isolate *what* you failed, *how* you failed it and *what* you can do to prevent the failure that you've isolated. Achieve the three. 3) Study from many, many experts. There's a lot of ingenious tricks that they employ, the path to learn is seemingly never-ending because they also have some unique twist of their own in their style. 4) Ground the fundamental design concepts that formulate the building blocks to design. Some key fundamental areas that helped *tremendously* with posing/gesture was a stronger sense of *perspective, mass forms (breaking forms down into 3D shapes) and basic human anatomy.* These are three basic ones, there are others, but when these online teachers emphasise the importance of these building blocks, it's not without good reason. From my journey I've come to realise that if you neglect these important aspects, and expect to achieve greatness, then you've set yourself up for failure/disappoint. Grind these concepts out, and along the way try to *enjoy* the process as much as you can. Hard work, discipline/consistency and commitment is one thing, but desires/enjoyment towards the craft is another. This is important because you may potentially run the risk of burning yourself out, and it's okay (you may need a break), but if you want this to be your future, then make sure you try to secure your passion. You'll definitely understand the significance of this as you grow.

Amazing content as always James. It helped me a lot. I wish we had a syllabus to know what levels of art to study, for how long to research before practicing, and how long to practice before moving on to the next stage...I.E. basic shapes/forms, shading/hatching, gesture drawing, poses, perspective. It would be a time saver and a life saver.

Ten-second gesture drawings seem very useful! Any tips on how you do them that fast?
@simpletown323
@simpletown323 6 жыл бұрын
Dan Efran the point of 10 second and 30 second gestures is to get rid of all the unnecessary information that a final drawing has. It makes you simplify and draw from instinct and makes you develop confidence in what you're drawing. The end result is something very simplistic but at the same time has a strong sense of dynamism, character and personality!
@moderndayjames
@moderndayjames 6 жыл бұрын
Agreed, you just have to boil it down to a line of action, the masses and lines for the arms and legs. It's less a matter of trying to be super expedient and moreso a means of just studying the positioning of the body. You'll find that when you do this, the studies will naturally become very quick
