Thanks for helping to answer my question and not just unloading some flame. By magic all i meant was the spark of creativity that dwells in most things. You are right, if they are doing this without prompting as you say then this is an example said "magic". A simple concept that teddymeledy never could grasp it seems lol :P

Is there any prompting as far as what to draw from the handler? I can undrestand them chosing the color, but if they give them signals as to what to draw it kinda takes themagic out of it. I want to think this is something the elephants just want/like to do. But given mans tendancy to make performers out of them in the past, i have to wonder :S

The elephant is being directed by the human, by tugging on the elephant's ear. Even if elephants have some inclination to draw in the wild, this is simply a carefully rehearsed stunt.

I wonder how much the elephant's handler is controlling the process. Is he directing the elephant, or is he merely helping by offering brushes and paints? We can't tell how much the handler is intervening, given the camera angle.

@rockethead712 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure from your comment... but you do realize that the elephant has no idea what he/she is drawing, right? He/she has been trained (brutally, so I hear) to make the brush strokes in the directions that the trainer is "steering" via tugging on the ears in whatever direction the trainer wants the brush strokes. Basically, the elephant's trunk is just like a remote-control arm, and the ear is the remote control. You knew that, right? You didn't really think elephants could paint, did you?
@nacillim112 жыл бұрын
It directs them to move their trunk in a particular direction and when to stop, that's all. The human is visualising and deciding what image to make, not the elephant. The elephant is making movements as directed, nothing more.

Elephants are much more intelligence than you give them credit for. They traded drawing in the sand for painting. All the humans had to do was show them a different way of doing the same thing. This is not simply 'mimicry'.

These elephants are tortured until they submit to humans, then trained through the infliction of pain. People who are in any doubt can watch "the elephant lady" video from about 4mins in, or any one of the elephant training videos here on you tube. People who find this spectacle wondrous or lovely should try to be more curious about reality.

I find it strange that the angle of their pictures is much closer to the ground than should be the case with a tall animal like the elephant. Their view of things should be other than ours and therefor I think if they could draw of own free will their paintings would be different from how these look.

THINK! How can such an intelligent and powerful animal be tought to perform tricks for stupid tourists? By pure torture! Do NOT visit such performances, nor take elephant rides or go to a circus! Look in KZbin for these searchwords: * behind the Siamese smile * Thai elephants - abused entertainment This is how they are trained. Framed and tortured with bullhooks, fire and beaten with steel pipes. Depraved of food and water for days or weeks, until they break. Or die. Nice paintings!

The elephants are trained to move the trunk/brush in the direction the mahouts (trainers) tug the elephants' ears. The elephants have no idea what they're painting. There are some other videos with better camera angles. There's one with an elephant painting "Ford Festiva" (written words) on a canvas. You can see the ear action a lot better in that video. Of course, in the Thailand tourist traps, they intentionally block a good view of what the mahout is doing. That's part of the scam.
@annwatt911212 жыл бұрын
Elephants are so far beyond our level of intelligence. They would never separate a human baby from it's family, beat and abuse and terrorize it to the point of quivering sadness, then profit from finally training it's broken little self to do something against it's nature. Shame.

@Azmerelda1 Humans are animals, and its been proven we have the highest level of organized critical and creative thinking of any animal we know of (can you name an elephant that can find out how to build a car or a computer?), of course, however, that doesn't mean animals are dumb. They do however attack and even kill each other and hate each other like humans do too. Don't be fooled. Animals get violent and hateful, and humans ARE animals, that kind of behavior is expected from many species
