I noticed that one dolphin of the group was looking more "aware" than the other, so I decided to see how she will do with painting. I've seen a LOT of facilities where doing this already, so nothing was really new at first. That's why I wanted to push the experience further, to see if this dolphin could be aware of what she was doing, instead of just holding a pencil, and having someone moving the sheet, like I noticed in some other facility. In my case, the frame is stable on a platform and I'm not holding it or touching it. Also, the dolphin is outside as well and stable, so what she wanted to do is also not influenced by the movement of the water.
As you can see, the video speaks by itself, and I was quite pleased by the results. This dolphin was so enjoying it at the end, than even sometimes she was doing it without any primary reinforcement. Look correctly at the video, you can actually see her looking at what she did between each time she draw. :)

Maybe it would help it you put the canvas on the side and the paintbrush perpendicular to its mouth. I don't know much about daulphins, but they look like they see more on the side. That way they can see what they're drawing.

I was closely watching the behavior of the dolphin. How it moves it's head from left to right due to the angle of it's eyes. It seems as though it cannot both look at the painting, and paint at the same time. Perhaps if you have another chance to do this activity with dolphins, try and put the canvas near the side of the dolphin, rather in front, and give the dolphin a brush in the shape of an L"" rather than an "I". That way the dolphin can both look at his creation, and create it, at the same time.
@frenchorcatrainer

Thank you for your input. I already thought about using a brush in the shape of an L. We shall see how this turn out next time I have the chance to work on similar project..

+frenchorcatrainer Did you try this with the dolphin being in the water and some water-proof painting? It looks quite uncomfortable for the dolphin to handle the brush in that position. He has almost no mobility. Another possibility would be to use a touch screen. There are some tablets/smartphones that are water-proof.
@frenchorcatrainer
@frenchorcatrainer 8 жыл бұрын
Don't worry, dolphins are really comfortable out of the water. I choose this particular dolphin because she love to spend lot of time on this platform actually. Beside, if we wanted the painting to be as accurate as possible, the animal had to be on a stable ground. Yes that will be the next step to involve something electronic such as a touch screen.

I can see a dolphin in the painting. With the eyes off to the side of its head, it'd be hard to see where you are painting. Which is where it comes off as abstract, but I think the dolphin is painting a dolphin. There is a fin that was made with intent. the blue j looking part in the upper left. There is an eye on the upper right. Then a top fin above the j. Then the tail fin being implied in the lower third of the left hand side. Pretty good for no hands painter with no hands.

+Bennie Green Holy shit. I can see it. I'm paraphrasing here, but isn't it said that the true indicator of a society is one that is artistic? There has to be a way to create a harness that focuses the vision of a dolphin so it can see what its doing.

Great video! She is adorable, and very artistic, too! :) A couple years ago, I went to six flags, and they were selling paintings made by the animals, and there were a few by the orca. What caught my attention, is that one of them actually looked like a dolphin! It had the head, pectoral fins, dorsal fin, flukes, and even and extra line on the head as a snout! The trainers told me that once, she had drawn a self-portrait using black and white for herself. I thought that that was amazing.

*You know what is a fascinating idea? Though some would say this dolphin is simply holding the brush in it's mouth and is trained to swat the brush against the piece of paper; yet, when one looks at the final product, it looks-like an aquatic, underwater scene - with a natural fluidity! Look at those two Venetian blue dashes of paint the dolphin painted in the upper left hand corner: other dolphins, possibly?*

Back in 1969, I was a painter at "The Aquatarium" in St. Petersburg Florida. The dolphin are so smart! I learned a LOT painting the rim around the main pool while the main dolphin was in that pool. He knew that bucket I was carrying didn't have fish, but he did every trick he knew at least 10 times each, then got mad because he didn't get rewarded and splashed me until we had to move him to another holding tank. (Sorry for the 'memory lane', but this brought it all back.) Love dolphins! ♥

This makes me smile everytime. It's sad that not more people know these things about dolphins, like they can do math, paint as shown here and even in a video it communicates with a human and understands we are not dangerous and goes up to the person and ''asks'' him to remove tangled fishing line from it. Just search ''diver rescues tangled dolphin'' So beautiful, gives me chills when I see it hehe :D

I wonder if the snobbish art critiques would be able to tell the difference of this painting by a dolphin and a painting done by one of the many talentless abstract hipster artists?
@highpineapple

You're thinking of modern art, which is pretentious garbage that makes people with zero talent feel like artists by over-explaining something until it starts to make sense. Actual abstract art absolutely takes a practiced hand and an extremely active imagination. I agree with you. The modern art critics would not be able to tell the difference. Just walk in some poor hipster with some made up sob story and it'll sell for thousands.

Suda, the painting elephant, really has this dolphin beat. This video is interesting, but the elephant is painting pictures of elephants and is signing his name. For any animal to hold a paintbrush and commit that paint to canvas or paper in a recognizable form is nothing short of a miracle.

I'm not sure if it would work or not, but maybe have a simple painting on the sides of the box or something with just something basic like a blue sky and green grass and let the dolphin try to re-make that painting on another paper? Giving him a green colour and then see if he draws in the correct position, same with blue? Would be quite a fun test, wouldn't it? :)

Definitely! The dolphin seemed to be turning his/her head a lot, and I'm not sure it could always tell when the paintbrush touched the paper. It definitely sees and engages with what's going on, but the mechanics of the thing are just difficult.

I also noticed her turning to the side to look at what she'd done. Are dolphins unable to see (visually) directly ahead of them? Maybe underwater they rely on sonar to look at things directly in front of them even when the visibilty is good.
