458 Lott is basically a stretched 458 Winchester magnum. Lobs a 500 grain bullet @2150 feet second for just over 5000 ft/lbs of muzzle energy. The Lott has become really popular for Dangerous game, as it can shoot 458 win mag in a pinch, which is easier to find in Africa than most other DGR cartridges.

Yes i heard of it, i got a ruger no1 chambered in 458 lott. it amazes me in how accutrate it is, so long as you dont flinch... Its not hard to get a bit scared of the recoil. You can allso fire 458 win mag in it if you want less recoil.

I think the statutes of limitations has expired for what I’m about to tell but in 1981 in Alaska while in the USCG, we used a 458 to cause a terminus glacier to calf. It took several shots but holy cow it worked!

Jaques P Lott developed the .458 Lott after a safari in Mozambique where he was tossed by a buffalo. But also to use .458 Win Mag ammo in rifle if one had to was his goal. The Lott was not the only one he helped with ,but also the .460 and .450 Guns&Ammo also . 2350 fps 500 grain. Bit slower with 550 grain and also 600 grain the Lott handles good . Same basis case as .375 HH it is . Good cartridge loved by professional hunters and dangerous game hunters worldwide.

Apple to oranges, but the 458 Lott takes around 76 grains of powder. A .50BMG? 250 grains. Powders burn at differing rates so the weights are a bit abitrary but you get the idea.

I own a Weatherby MK V in .460 Weatherby Magnum, and another in a Ruger No1. in it also. I totally understand the reaction to firing both the laughter and pain. In addition to a lot of recoil, it also has a fierce report and throws a lot of fire. In addition to the .458 Lott ammo, you can shoot the .458 Winchester Magnum ammunition out of it also. Go Big or Go Home!
