@@Macachee Astrapotherium and its kin were NOT closely related to Proboscideans at all. They were more closely allied to liptoterns, notoungulates, and perissodactyls than to elephants. They also evolved in South America and Antarctica, and never inhabited other continents, unlike proboscideans, which have their origins in Africa, and only eventually spread to Europe, Asia, North and South America. The only proboscideans to make it into South America were gomphotheres, around 2-3 million years ago. Astrapotheres went extinct as much as 6-7 million years ago. Reading is fundamental!
