He usually starts a new album cycle playing the parts same as the album live once he becomes bored or has played it a couple of times he starts to challenge himself and play the songs with new patterns. one of the things that impresses me the most about matt (besides his monstruous technique) is his kit. usually drummers that play prog use these bombastic and enourmous kits, with so many cymbals that you wouldn't know how to use, all these toms, double bass drum, and stuff like that. but matt's kit is just normal, not exaggerated, with everything you need to play complex stuff anyway.

Just came across this EStep - and really cool to see that you've done a breakdown here of Garstka's recording this many years ago. It's interesting to me that the elements you seem to consider the most challenging are the fusion elements that are very Weckl / Caliuta inspired. The 16th 'e' accents on the ride and the displaced fusion breaks are almost right off of Weckl's Multiplicity. This is an important part of his repertoire and one of the things I love about his playing, and love playing, too.

That WAS a lot of fun! Thanks Estepario!! The thing about Garstka and AAL imho, there's not enough space. You're getting blasted with notes for 45 minutes, and it gives most listeners a headache. Stuff one of their tunes in the middle of others, and it's a hit, because they're monsters. I guess what I'm saying is that I prefer music that expresses emotion and or conveys a story more than the "wow look at me and how awesome I am at my instrument" music. And that lots of notes are great, but it needs contrast.

Here's the thing, I'm sort of one of those old school guys you mention. I've been told I'm what you'd get if you put Danny Carey, Abe Cunningham "Deftones", and Mike Portnoy together. I add, that you'd also have to take about 70% of their ability away lol. But I heard Animals As Leaders, in the oddest place, YEARS ago. I heard them on the radio channels that were on Digital Cable.
