That WAS a lot of fun! Thanks Estepario!! The thing about Garstka and AAL imho, there's not enough space. You're getting blasted with notes for 45 minutes, and it gives most listeners a headache. Stuff one of their tunes in the middle of others, and it's a hit, because they're monsters. I guess what I'm saying is that I prefer music that expresses emotion and or conveys a story more than the "wow look at me and how awesome I am at my instrument" music. And that lots of notes are great, but it needs contrast.

LMAOOO i love the way that this dude does react videos because, i do this when i watch movies LMAOOOO nobody wants to watch with me. i think they're just missing every fuckin thing that makes a movie special. i don't even know if we're watching the same movie, even though i'm sitting with them in the same room watching the same tv. blows my mind honestly. i appreciate the love and attention he gives here so we can learn loll 2:20 yess this dude is letting us know of the musicality of the cymbals. i love it. it's easy to think that drums are all just the same note because we're taught it's a rhythm instrument, but hoooooow WROONG. every single hit has its own tone and resonance and makes its own music. and the players that go back and forth with the tones also, they can make a drum come alive

6:38... i listened to this twice and your explanation... i think there's even more in the that ghosting on the high hat... that is STUPID insane what he's doing in the first 4 seconds! he's creating rhythmic repetitions in the high hat, and just ever so lightly kissing the top and bottom edges, not so much that it douses it, but it sets up an entirely new, sympathetic resonant note.... and its NOT in the same timing... he's mixing it up in the rhythm... thats crazy

Iv been following him since he was a skinny little drum turd, I mean nerd, at Berkeley, and I always thought it was interesting he was adamant about not needing traditional grip to do all the left hand acrobatics that say jack dejohnette can do, (there's a good one, see live performance with herbie hancock, pat metheny and his good friend, Dave Holland.. Just the first 5 minutes.. Phew,) so in Berkeley he started doing KZbin videos and you would always notice him talking about left hand speed because he was in competition with somebody who is very fast with traditional grip in his classes which was the first thing I got to see about him was that he could do any style but he refused to go traditional grip with the left hand because he could pull off whatever they could do but with match grip... that would be one conversation I'd love to hear interviewed with him taking it back to those days I forget the guy's name that was in his class that he would always bring up that he was in competition with over left hand speed but obviously he's not lacking anything but not adopting traditional grip

Another good one, I'm showing my age now, is Bill bruford, maybe the first prog rock drummer, between him and Carl palmer.. Have you ever really sat down quiet and listened to close to the edge by yes, or on a bike or something, please have at it, and remember that was before hi tech studio protocols, idt they barely used a click, but reel to reel only, before ADAT, before midi, (yes', keys player Rick Wakeman had a hand in developing midi, no matter what wiki says, Keith Emerson and Rick Wakeman were instrumental (,pun intended) in developing language for keyboards to talk to one another or sync up, yea but close to the edge, and check out that groove in 2cd verse, Chris Squier was tragically underrated bassist

@@Virvum_Juggernaut Damn, how the hell did you find me here too, one thing after the other??? I guess internet is also a small place! You are totally right [again], its Virgil not Vince. And I'm tired of knowing that. So how the hell did I wrote Vince instead?! For real mate, sometimes I just think that someone changed my comments. For me, he's one of the best drummers, period. But you're right about the traditional grip. As a bass player, who also loves drums, the traditional grip has always seemed very uncomfortable to me. Especially on things that "swing" harder, like Virgil plays. He is an incredible musician! Few things come out of Australia [musically speaking] into the world, compared to the typical US and UK, but when it does, it's usually always great and unique! Be proud, mate, you should! Thanks for the correction.

one of the things that impresses me the most about matt (besides his monstruous technique) is his kit. usually drummers that play prog use these bombastic and enourmous kits, with so many cymbals that you wouldn't know how to use, all these toms, double bass drum, and stuff like that. but matt's kit is just normal, not exaggerated, with everything you need to play complex stuff anyway.

I've been listening to metal for 30 years. I've been playing guitars and drums for 20 years. As an extreme death metal drummer, I thought we could play anything!!! HAHAHAHA. How cocky I was! I came across your videos. I thought that when I play fast 280BPM - I'm amazing!!! At the moment I don't play any instrument... Out of shame... I would say with my hand on my heart that YOU ARE NUMBER 1 ON THE ENTIRE PLANET!

Mike Mangini Or Riccardo Merlini for their speed with one hand just as you are also a candidate for excellent one handed playing Mike’s coolest thing in my opinion is playing cymbals upside down (other than his incredible composing ability as a drummer)

I am not a musician of any kind and was completely riveted to this video start to finish. You are great and thank you for 20 minutes of entertainment. Your breakdowns are fascinating and your playing is unbelievable to me. Thanks.

Hey nice video. Could you do a react video of Virgil Donati ? This guy is one of the most technical drummer (maybe the most) imo. You would have lot of things to say about his play. Thank you.

Excellent. Love it how an awesome drummer like you Estepario appreciates other good drummers and giving credit where it's due. Lots of new rubbish musicians think the sun shines out of their arses whereas you stay humble and a mentor to drummers. Rock on and I'm so happy to have discovered uou this week. Grazia pera questo and greetings from South Africa 🤟🏽🤟🏽🤟🏽
