If you want to be a great press coverage, Defensive Back, you must have great feet (for starters). And, be *EXTREMELY COMPETITIVE!* Hell, competitiveness might be the most important asset. Also, be as pesky as possible! Meaning, any chance you get to bump, chop, nudge, jam, tug, bow ... *DO IT* (legally)! Furthermore, remember that the stomach doesn't lie. Follow it and or the waistline/lower back. Watching a receivers head or feet can be misleading causing you to lose a step or two. And if you do end up getting beat, always run (hustle your ass off) to catch up to the reciever! And *never* look back for the ball until you are even with the potential pass catcher. Only at this point is it safe to make a play on the ball. Lastly, no freebie rule (only to be used if all else fails): I'd *much rather* have a Defensive Back commit a foul (interfere) than get beat for a touchdown. Especially at the Colligate, Highschool, Middle School levels. At those levels, it's just a 10 yard penalty, if I'm not mistaken, and we can live with that. At the professional level it could end up being a 10, 20, 30, 40, to 80 and beyond yard penalty, which is *ridiculous!*

Primarily when you are on the wide receivers hip and you feel the ball is coming. There are times when you can look earlier but you need to know who you are playing against. When playing a line drive throwing quarterback, you can look earlier and sometimes when you are a step behind.
