Eleventh Cycle Book Review
Eleventh Cycle by Kian N. Ardalan is a self-published grimdark fantasy and the first book in the Mistlands series. It came out in 2023 and since before its release it has been a hot topic and highly praised.
My opinion might slightly differ from the majority and I will delve into detail in explaining why.
I hope you enjoy it.

I completely agree with you. If you’re going to “go there” with certain traumatic events, you have to be willing to go the distance and “go there” with the consequences of said events. Your criticisms of this book are perfectly valid.

Thank you, Ann! 💖 Indeed. There is nothing inherently bad in being bold with your choices as an author and I am absolutely not asking anyone to restrict their creativity. Still, that doesn't mean I have to like what said creativity produces, especially when the author is selective in his boldness in this particular way...

Great Review. It's funny how when I was watching your review of it, there was those review that were saying "The Best Self Published Of All-Time" pop up as recommended to watch. lol. Love your new intro by the way.😊

Thank you, Neda! ❤️ Yeah, I've been seeing these reviews for a while now. It's why I bought the book in the first place... Thank you, I wanted to change the aesthetic for a while now, but I am not great with those things - my taste is very chaotic 😅

The book had some interesting things going on, but I agree with this review, and I also agree with the general sentiment of being confused as to the tone of reception the book has gotten. I do not understand how so many reviews fail to mention the book's writing which is objectively ridden with problems one expects to see in a first draft. An editor could fix a lot of them up and I've been half-expecting the entry to get that treatment as self-pubs can do that pretty easily, but I don't think it has happened yet (the audiobook's existence is maybe stifling such changes). I was also confused at how so few of them mentioned the sex scenes which are flatout p*graphic in nature. Extreme descriptions of bodily fluids doing what-where felt very out of pocket to me. I'd be fine with it if they were attached to some themes and elements, but if that was there I must have missed it.

Yes, indeed! I am shocked that this is not a bigger subject in the community, considering how many people have spoken about this book. I also saw no connection to themes in regards to the sexual scenes. In my opinion, the author wanted to make the book dark and went about it in the weirdest way possible...

Thank you for your review. This book had been on my list after I heard another Booktuber rave wonderful things about it, but it sounds like you saved me from a terrible reading experience. That scene you talk about during the enjoyment section of your video would have ended with me throwing the book out of a window.

Thank you for the kind words! I was very tempted myself to throw it out the window. I didn't mostly because it's huge and very heavy and i didn't want to injure someone 😅

Really interesting review, especially about the writing. With the novel I'm currently drafting, I've been searching my document when I feel like I've used a certain word or phrase too many times. If it turns out I did, I'll cut down the number as much as I can. Also, that scene you discuss at the end makes me certain I won't read this, so I appreciate you mentioning it. I'm not too squeamish usually (and like dark books) but I think that would be too much for me.

Oh, you're writing a book! That is awesome! ✨📖 Yeah, we don't always notice how much we use certain words. And when you have to write something as massive as a novel, it's even more difficult. I wouldn't have noticed it if the words in this case weren't as uncommon. Indeed, that scene was... something else. 😶 I also indulge in a lot of gruesome books, but I guess this scene is where I draw the line.

Bought this book after reading and watching a few reviews. Kind of of wish I would've seen this first. Might've saved me a few dollars. I don't know if I'll be able to get past the writing 'style'. Well, live and learn, I suppose. 🤦

I can’t not enjoy it tbh I think you not being into dark souls is one of the reasons you didn’t end up enjoying. It’s like reading a baseball book while not liking the sport of baseball

I’m convinced that other booktubers and reviewers don’t actually read these books, and only recommended this one because it was allegedly “inspired” by a game series that they like. As a Dark Souls fan, I was interested initially, but after reading a rough sample and seeing how poorly the prose is written, how nonsensical the characters and concepts are named, and several other glaring problems, I’ve yet to find a single resemblance to anything that made that game series good. Given my own assessment along with the other issues highlighted in this review, I am steering clear of this. Hopefully the author learns from this.

Well like you said yourself, you aren't familiar with what inspired this book. If you don't enjoy the souls game lore this prob isn't for you

Fair enough, that is a valid point. 🙂 But a book is written in words and I still think there is something to be said about the quality of the writing of this one. Wouldn't you agree?

Regardless, a work should be able to stand on its own. Outside context should ideally enrich a piece of writing, not be necessary to understand it. This book seems like an example of poor execution.

@@libraryunbounded I'm a huge fan of Berserk and Dark Souls, and so I understand him overusing words like "nascent" and "caustic", but I think you're absolutely right about the actual writing. It is deeply flawed, riddled with mistakes and I think it is somewhat obvious that the author isn't writing in his native language. I get the impression in some areas that he has simply used a thesaurus to find a synonym without understanding the contextual applicability of it. "Perishable" was the best example. I really enjoyed your review, I think it was fair.
