Oh my god. This video reminded me of that one woman that threw a fit over the ELF primer a few years ago because she didn’t understand how an airless pump worked. I had forgotten about that. Had a nice giggle.

I always love seeing you and Hailey compare pricing in Aus $. People forget a $2 elf brow product in the US can cost way more elsewhere. So what makes sense price wise in the US, could be a $20 face powder in Australia. That powder is $8 US which compared to Charlotte’s $45 powder makes way more sense to purchase. But if I had to choose from benefit’s brow product and elf at an Aussie price point, it gets a little bit harder because of the amount of product you get for each price.

It’s a reflection of our general living expenses and income, and of course conversion. When our minimum wage is pretty much triple that of the US, items are also more expensive to buy. It all balances out in the end 😊

@Molly A yeah a lot of people freak out when they hear the prices but then they also freak out when they hear that the average person in Australia can buy a Pat McGrath palette with one day of pay (obviously not factoring in having to pay bills and general cost of living), and no one here replies on tips for their income. So it all balances out

Trying to find the right shade for base products is awful - totally agree. Their shade names make no sense. But with promos in their loyalty program I get so much free stuff to try I'm not completely put off by it. They have a bunch of skin care in their Holy Hydration range that I consistently buy.

I so appreciate your honest and thorough review. It feels like the YT beauty community has a tendency toward group think when it comes to hyped products. I think that many reviewers wear a product one time, give a review and then move on... it can be difficult to give a truly honest review, or even have an honest perception of products when they are received in PR for free. I do not think people are intentionally deceitful, I think its often unconscious. I started buying into the ELF hype and as I have gotten some products, I too have been disappointed, especially with their brushes. So many rave about them, I find them to be scratchy. I so prefer Sonia Kashuk from Target.

Omg, I’ve been looking for an Australian makeup review channel since I started watching beauty youtube in like 2018! 😱 I can’t believe it took me *this* long to finally find someone who talks about makeup available in Australia, who cites Australian prices and Australian websites. I’m SO glad I found your channel. Obviously I subscribed instantly and am about to binge watch your videos. 😃 Thank you for existing 😂 👍

I absolutely adore ELF but I totally agree with you about the shade range. It took me forever to find my correct shade for the Camo CC Cream. And they only came out with my shade when they expanded the shade range. Now that I have my shade I wear it everyday but would have appreciated if I could have found the right shade from the jump. I also agree with you about the eyeshadow quads, I didn’t feel any of the color stories at all. The putty primer broke me out.

Seeing the comparison between the Nars and elf cream bronzers, I totally get it! Seeing the very even swatch of the Nars next to the streaky swatch of the elf, they look very similar in color, but you’re absolutely right they do not compare…

I love the instant lift brow pencil because of the price and it has more product than most other drugstore brow pencils. So it’s super cost effective, works well, and is a good color match (I wear neutral brown too). I also love the lip shine in ecstatic because it’s a color dupe for Clinique black honey. They also have some nice basic skincare I use because I use tretinoin so a more basic cleanser and moisturizer helps simplify my routine. I also live in the US, so some added context to my thoughts. Loved the roundup 💕

I can't get over how expensive Elf is there versus the US! The brow pencil is $2 here in the states. Elf is definitely hit and miss. I have found that the Elf hydrating camo concealer is far superior to the camo concealer even for oily skin. I have fallen in love with their cleansing balm. Totally worth the money because it actually cleanses in one go with drying out your skin. Totally agree with you about the mascara...garbage!

This is a pretty common reaction from people in the US, but I can assure you that after considering conversion, tax (that’s included in the price and not added after) and also other factors like our much higher minimum wage, these are still cheap in our market. It all balances out 😊

Really appreciate your detailed and outstanding reviews, thank you for the work! Going to try the halo powder, been eyeing it for a bit..Sounds like it will work for my mature, normal somewhat oily tzone..Agree on the no budge sticks, they do budge, you confirmed it..I have the gray one, using as a lower lash liner, that is what I can get away with..I have a bitesize shadow palette in Rosewater is pretty, but yeah, hard to build up and it fades, too much super fine sparkle that flies everywhere, can make it work a bit with wet brush with setting spray..I have the camo concealer too, and my color is also way too light..Maybelline fit me is my go-to and will stick with it..Thanks again for all you do!!

I definitely want to try that setting powder - I need something that sets a base and controls oiliness without starkly highlighting the fact that I'm in my 40s now. It's priced at £8 here, which is much cheaper than the Smashbox Halo powder I'm about to finish up (which is great stuff, but not necessarily 4x the price great).

You literally have the same feelings on all of these products as I do... I was one of the ones to suggest the Brightening Concealer and the Glowy Loose Powder (one of my favorite setting powders*)... the brightening concealer is good for what it is. The hydrating camo concealer is better than the OG camo concealer. But still is not an HG product.

I literally just ran out and brought the elf halo powder today at target hehe...based on your last video yays, and while i was there i picked up the bite size shadow quad in hot jalapeno, even in small towns the stand/shelf is picked bare for elf......and sadly essence too, can never find my mascara since its constantly bragged out online, admittedly im one of the braggers hahaha (I brought the bite size shadow as a cheap alternative because i really actually want the melt cosmetics gemini palette but mainly for the grungy green and i have never tried green before) so this was a good cheap alternative, gotta say though the green doesnt apply too bad, cant say much about the longevity but it has certainly helped solidify that i do want to try more grungy greens.

This was a very thorough review, thank you. I am the one who was disappointed by ELF.. I threw away the stick eye shadow. The liquid eye shadow creases on me and fades. It is just about to be thrown away. The eye shadow quad in the same colour as yours does not complement me either. Did I save money? No I wasted it. I am not buying any more make-up from ELF. I may look into the skin care at a later time. But there are great options in stores besides ELF. In Canada ELF is not that cheap.

I got one of the bite sized eyeshadow from their mint collection, I enjoy it but it has one of those frosty light shades too. Pretty much only good for an inner corner highlight. I've also tried that eyeliner and I agree, super dry. I love a lot of elf products but there's definitely duds in the line, and if I had to pay aus prices I would skip a lot of them. But the worst one I've tried? That ride or die lip balm. Got the berry shade and it straight up tasted like chemicals. Every time I got any in my mouth it felt like being poisoned. 🙅‍♀️

Elf is a brand I want to love but their more misses than hits has me reticent buying from Elf, having said that when they get it right they do indeed impress me. You articulated the lip balm perfectly. I have the same shade as you (I am NC42) with pigmented lips and it feels drying on my matured lips but your analysis got me thinking and yes you are right it doesn’t feel parched when it’s gone ( Vaseline and Burt’s Bees chapstick does that) but not very nourishing when I apply it, it’s O..k.. concur a 100%. Also I feel like the US based YTers I watch seem to give Elf a huge pass and recommend almost everything 🤦🏽‍♀️ whereas the two I watch outside of US , you and Angie (with her review on their bite sized palette -when she lived in Sweden 😛) are very honest

I wonder how much skin type factors in to the experience with the poreless putty primer. My skin runs on the drier side now that I’m getting older and I live in a climate with dry winter air. I really like the primer, especially for it’s moisturizing properties and it does extend my makeup. I buy backups of it. And the other primer I like is also by Elf- the one that dupes the Milk makeup primer. That said I do agree Elf can be really hit or miss but when I find a product that works from them I tend to stick with it because here in the US they are cheap but effective: Wow Brow gel, Holy Hydration eye cream are two that come to mind. I’m lukewarm on the putty bronzer (got a free one) and I got the liquid shadow (also for free as gift with purchase) and agree that it is utter crap. No budge eyeshadow sticks are cheap enough to stick in a purse and use in a rush but not on the daily. So these products do have their place and function for me. Thanks as always for the review. Always interesting.

I did like the elf putty bronzer because a) they had a cool toned shade, and being a fair olive, most bronzers are just too warm toned for me and b) it is fairly sheer and buildable, which works really well with how I like to do my makeup and c) it isn't too dewy, it just blends in with the texture of my skin or foundation, and I find that looks the most flattering on me. I understand why other people don't prefer it, but I will be repurchasing mine whenever I run out, which, despite using it nearly every time I wear makeup, I haven't even hit pan yet.

I’m glad you enjoy it! There are many out these days that meet your requirements. The NARS one I showed is less dewy/tacky feeling than the elf one because it’s more of a mousse than an oily balm consistency. It also blends down to a sheer shade or can be built up. I also don’t like a heavy bronzer, but I don’t want it so sheer that there’s no point using it, you just use a fraction of what you need with the Elf one to get the same effect but with more ease.

Yeah, I was underwhelmed by the putty blushes. They are fine, but not something I feel like I need to have. There is nothing about the formula or shades that stands out to me. Same with the entire Camo line, I don't think there is anything I actually like from it, other then the Camo Concealer Sponge lol. But I do honestly love the Putty Bronzers, I love sheer bronzers and the shade, Tan Lines, is one of the few bronzer shades that works well for my fair skin.

I agree, some elf products are half amazing like how do they do this for $3-5 (USD) and some are useless. In the US most stores let you return with no question so you can try them & not even out money if you hate it. Also if you sign up for the points club shipping in the USA is almost always free even with no purchase min. I love the hydrating core lips, I love the delightful & ecstatic shades. If not for mask life & only going to the office 1 day a weeka t most now life I would have gone through a few of these. I usually use pressed powder blush but tried the elf putty blush & liked it (shade Maldeves (wine)) and I am going to try the luminous putty blush in St Barts next elf order. I like the elf putty eye primer. I don't use foundation much (face makeup often breaks me out,), I got lucky the first one I bought off the shelf was perfect for me, though I'm super pale and the lightest cool tone or neutral is usually for me. I have used the $4 length & volumizing mascara & liked it, not sure if same wands since I got mine a while ago. I also like smashbox & essences's mascaras. My moisturizer was discontinued a few years ago & while desperately searching for one that didn't break me out I tried the holy hydration cream which gave me white bumps like most do (I have settled on Hyram's Selfless), but if that's not an issue for you it is a great face cream IMO. I use it on my neck, I don't get breakouts there. I am a fan of cruelty free drugstore brands and indie brands, I don't really go much for luxury makeup but I will pay a little more for skin care that works if I have to.

I think ELF can be pretty hit or miss but in The States they're usually so cheap that I find it like a scavenger hunt to see what's worth the gamble lol. I continue to be surprised at how expensive their stuff is in Australia! I really like some of their skincare -- the Holy Hydration moisturizer is a lovely thick moisturizer for me. I also love the SPF 30 version. The hydrating camo concealer is good for light foundation or spot concealing for me. The bummer is some of my favorite stuff from them is in limited edition collections! The Electric Mood stuff -- the disco eye kit, the glassy skin balm and the cream blush and highlight quad are good but they're being phased out. I agree with the shadow sticks -- I wanted to love them but the metallic ones never quite set for me and they make my hooded eyes feel like they're just sticking together. I have one matte one though and I like it. The 4-pan eyeshadows are hit and miss. I love the grungy green jalapeno one and one of the mint melt ones but was underwhelmed by the berry and purple ones. Sorry for writing a novel lol.

I have textured skin, but the Sephora powder foundation looks fine on me and is only $2 pricier. On the other hand, I don't mind the eyeshadows in the more lurid shades, because I only use a bright green or blue enough to want to spend $6 on them, and I like the wow brow for soft hold and a natural colour.

In the UK not sure if its everywhere elf make my all time favourite black liquid eyeliner. It comes with a brush application which for me is my favourite as it gives sleek, thin, perfect lines great for cat eyes. I find personally felt tips are too thick,dry out instantly and are too bulky/uncomfortable to hold. This eyeliner does not budge one bit no matter how much i touch my eyes or cry which is great as i dont need to ever look in a mirror throughout the day to check it! I wish they would make a brown version because im trying to only wear true brown mascara and eyeliner now as black is too heavy looking. I watch a lot of declutter videos and never see them decluttered anymore because they're already long gone from their collection. I gave mine away soon after purchasing because they were crap. All the complexion products are yellow or orange on me. I gave up on shade matching after the 1st round. My concealer was orange and darker than the yellow foundation despite the shade numbering system. I like their Holy Hydration face cream so it's not like I hate the brand completely. Thank you Kat. I have tried various Elf products and the only thing I have kept and liked was the primer infused powder blush. Everything elseI have tried to make work and eventually just decluttered. I will say that I had the same bites quod as you, and a different one rose water and the difference in quality between the neutral one and the pinky one was massive. But it dropped and the one shade I could use for one and done shattered. And did not want to spend the £4 to replace it for 1 shadow. The only possible thing I might look at is the pen concealer but not going to go out of my way.

I really like the rosy-browny toned matte eyeshadow pots for a base. It is sort of skintoned almost. It reminds me of the Mac Paint Pot. I have a fee shades but the sort of skintoned colors are the best. Although they can dry out a little bit and need to use your finger to warm it up, especially having it for a while.

I love the Bite Size eyeshadow in Rose Water and have almost fully panned 3 shades. It is ideal to keep in my car for quick looks and I am less worried about my toddler destroying it because of the price. BUT I don't use the darkest shade at all - I suspect it might be patchy - and really didn't like the Cream and Sugar one so I decluttered it. I think these are a bit hit or miss. Fully agree that Natasha Denona and Viseart options are better.

I have also found the 16h camp concealer to be temperamental, as well. I'm planning to try the hydrating version, because from the sounds of it it'll be a better one for my skin. I'm in Canada though, so it's financially reasonable for me to try a different formula or shade in elf products. 😜

Yeah they are more, but they include taxes and factor in things like higher minimum wage. So they do cost more than in the US, but they still occupy the same low price position in our market

You probably would be shocked to buy anything AUS. That NARS bronzer she also mentioned is $38 in the US. She said it was $57 in AUS. That seems hard to stomach at that price. AUS prices are insane by comparison
@KitschSnitch
@KitschSnitch 2 жыл бұрын
But that’s a direct conversation plus tax equation. US$38 = AU$54 and tax is an additional 10% that’s built in to the price, so $57 is actually a bit cheaper than buying it in the US (plus tax). So it might seem crazy, but it’s just currency conversion that makes it seem high

The bite size eyeshadow surprised me...The only palette in my collection I wouldn't give up for it, is my Nabla Dreamy 2...Nabla's formula is a dream coming true.🥰 I was not amazed by the elf formula at all, but I have combo skin and a bit wrinkly, oily, hooded eyelids, and that elf palette stayed on for 13 hours in 38°C (100.4 °F) without any creasing, eventhough I spent most of the day walking outside...😯 I had way more expensive palettes (bite size is 5€ and those palettes were in the 25-35€ range) that wouldn't even last for two hours during winter (-15°C/5°F usually can't melt makeup off of my face) ...😅

Powder foundations usually need to be worn with a sticky primer and they also do darker up once applied due to the moisture. So you wanna order a few shades up than your usual when purchasing powder foundations. So maybe that's why it applied darker than it looked in the pan. Hope that helped. xP
@KitschSnitch
@KitschSnitch 2 жыл бұрын
I use powder foundation often and I don’t need to use a sticky base because I have oily skin that holds it on well. It does apply darker which is why I can’t wear this, but if I purposely go a shade down or pick the wrong undertone it can make me look too ghostly or pink, so if I could see this in person I definitely would have gone lighter, but it was very hard to pick from the swatches online 😊

I actually enjoyed most of the Elf products I have tried. Some of it possibly has to do with the fact that I live in the US and the price seems unbeatable to me. I love their brushes and face sponges! I have enjoyed their bite size eyeshadows and putty blushes. The shadow sticks are 'meh'.

I think ELF is definitely worth it if you're in the States. I usually will stock up on a few things when they do a big sale, like I'll spend like $25 and get brow pencils to last me a year. I also think the hydrating version of the camo concealer is much nicer even though I'm a combo skin person.

The cheaper products are worth it here too, it’s almost impossible to find a $7 full priced brow pencil, which can come down to $3.50 on sale. We just have higher prices which reflect currency conversion, taxes included in the price, and higher wages

Thanks for the in depth review. The only product I’ve tried from elf is their putty eye primer in cream. The colour is way to darker than I expected and it looks quite yellow on me. Besides it is sooo dry that I can barely pick up any product nor can I really put it on my lids. If by any chance I’ve managed to get the primer on it looks patchy and to top it all the eyeshadows don’t really stick to it… I bought it after a YT mentioned it was supposed to be a dupe for Nars’ eye primer. I have never tried Nars products so can’t really compare the two. Anyway that putty primer is something I regret buying

Interesting about the shade - I also use light 26N in the Flawless concealer and I'm quite a bit deeper than you. I found that the formula oxidizes on me, so the initial shade is too light, but it oxidizes to my depth. The shade I originally got, medium 30W, leaves an orange/dark cast on my skin. That concealer, the wow brow, and precise brow pencil are consistent elf products in my collection. Everything else, I'm either not interested, I'd rather pay more for better, or doesn't add much to my collection/stand out compared to what I've got.
@KitschSnitch

26N is a really good match on me, and I don’t notice any oxidisation, it might apply a smidge lighter than what it dries down but it matches well. I think people often think I’m a lot more fair than I am in person because I tend to look lighter on camera, usually neutral beige shades work well on me

Haha Tony moly is the best! There's no point me buying any more lip stains because they are never as good!
