What is it about this piece that so perfectly reaches into the soul to inspire hope and resolve? A truly majestic performance.

At first, I didn't think the piano alone could convey the power and emotion of this piece.. How wrong I was. Well done you.!
@klausbambey1246 жыл бұрын
Magnificent!!! At first I thought only the organ or an orchestra can convey the power of this piece but you showed that also the solo piano can do that. The trill before the finale is thrilling.

Yes, it's as if the entire piece builds towards that moment. Mr. Barton does a great job with the bass line throughout.

Was the Harmonic pedal used during this performance? I feel it was. This has life and breath I have never heard in piano performances of this before. And after two years, it is still soul-stirring and majestic as I remember.

Great performance! Is the first time I hear about Elgar. Some parts of this "enigma variation" remember me Beethoven 2nd movement of Sonata No. 8 “Pathetique” and others Bach Air on G string.
@danielbaker70647 жыл бұрын
The second movement of the Pathetique was actually used as loose inspiration when Elgar composed "Nimrod", so you're absolutely right to be reminded of it.
@lefinlay7 жыл бұрын
Nimrod is the ninth of his Enigma Variations. I don’t doubt that inspiration may have come from the adagio in the pathetique, but it all goes around one common theme
@MyNguyen-ph5si7 жыл бұрын
A man has no name, but call me James No it kind of did come from Beethoven's Pathetique Sonata. Variation no.9 is basically a memory, of an incident where Elgar was cheered up from his depressive slump by a friend, who hymned the 2nd movement of the Pathetique Sonata to him. This variation is dedicated to that friend.

It also reminds me of the opening 1st movement of Beethovens Piano Sonata No. 31

@Radiatoron886 жыл бұрын
Go to the website IMSLP, and then under Scores click on E to bring up the list of composers whose last names begin with "E." Then click on Elgar, and then click on "Variations on an Original Theme, 'Enigma," op. 36." Then click on "Arrangements" and scroll down to find Elgar's own piano solo transcription of the work. I think Mr. Barton is playing Elgar's own piano solo transcription. Gorgeous work and beautifully played by Mr. Barton!

Far too heavily played in places. I agree it should be double Forte in places but he is too clumpy. He would be better playing the whole piece quieter and then reaching for a louder effect as required from a quieter mean base. Of course it could be the piano that is not doing the player's rendition justice ....

Just doesn't quite work as well on piano as it does on the Organ. The dynamic contrast needed for this piece is insane, and one that could only be truly done with a full orchestra, or an Organ. Beautiful either way.
