This video shows a method to check or check if a regulator - rectifier is in good working order or on the contrary it is burned and it has to be replaced.
The video shows it in the regulators - rectifiers of the Yamaha XT 600 from the years 1986 - 1998 more or less, but in fact it is applicable to verify any regulator - three phase rectifier. To do it in any other, all you have to do is identify which are the 3 pins of the phases coming from the stator or alternator cable and which is the positive output pin and the negative output pin.
The function of the regulator - rectifier, as its name suggests, is to first rectify the alternating current that the stator or alternator of the motorcycle sends (and it does it by means of 3 cables, which correspond each of them with each one of the three phases) to direct current, which sends it to the battery to be able to recharge it. For this, the rectified alternating current is also regulated to a voltage between 12.7 and not more than approximately 13.4 volts and is sent to the battery through a positive output and another negative output.
The colors of the input cables corresponding to the phases are usually yellow, or white, and the colors of the output cables are usually; red for the positive and black or sometimes green for the negative.
It is very important to do this check or verification, to have previously identified which are the pins of the three phases and which are of the positive and negative.
In the case at hand, the video shows them clearly; By placing the regulator - rectifier in the position where the connector has the coupling flange on top, the pins of the three phases are the two upper and the lower left. The pin of the output to positive is the lower right and the negative, in this case, has no pin but is obtained from the housing of the regulator - rectifier.
This test would not be applicable to regulators - single-phase rectifiers.
