As far as I'm concerned, Elgin played in that 1972 season and therefore won a ring. I don't care what anyone says. One of the most underrated players of all time. In the top 15-20 players ever for sure.
@M.L.76 жыл бұрын
Jerry West mentioned in his book (West by West) that he found it beyond frustrating when he (Jerry) and the Lakers finally won the championship in '72. Jerry said the only thing on his mind was that Elgin was missing. If memory serves, Elgin retired from basketball the day before the Lakers went on their legendary win-streak of 33 games on their way to the championship. It would have been wonderful to see Jerry and Elgin win a title together. Nevertheless, Elgin is a living legend.
@jshudo446 жыл бұрын
The biggest crime is the fact that the Lakers are honoring a man that should have had a statue years ago. All that aside, I'm glad Elgin finally gets his place in Lakers history.
@M.L.76 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Sad, too, that Kareem had to kick and scream a bit for them to follow through on their promise to get him his statue. In my opinion, Kareem is the greatest player of all-time. Even Magic said that he (Cap) should've had the first statue.
@jshudo446 жыл бұрын
M. L. Him and Kareem both deserved statues years ago, absolutely.

True!

I may be the black sheep in the conversation, but from the show-time era, I've always felt that Michael Cooper should have had his jersey retired. He was there for all 5 rings, and he is THE ONLY Laker in franchise history to be awarded the defensive player of the year award. When you think about all the greats, especially the centers that the Lakers have had through the years, I think it's an absolutely amazing feat.

Very entertaining video. I started feeling emotional when Jerry West spoke about how he felt about Elgin. I hadn’t seen this since I saw it on TV live. Elgin Baylor was my favorite player of all time in terms of how much joy he brought me watching him beginning in 1964. I also will never forget watching him and the Lakers play an intra-squad game at my HS in ‘65 (San Fernando) which was actually a fundraiser for rookie Gail Goodrich’s HS football field lights. Held at our school because we had one of the biggest gym capacities in the city at the time. Elgin scored 36 while barely breaking a sweat.

Most underrated player in NBA history. The forebear to Dr. J, Jordan, and all the generations of athletic wings to come after.
@qhom156 жыл бұрын
Gregory Sweer what’s incorrect about that?
@gregorysweer99516 жыл бұрын
Quinton Hom it's incorrect the simple fact is dr. J was in a class all by his self he didn't copy anyone moves what dr. J did in the ABA in the NBA he did it in the playground he knew his shots were going to go in today's players hope their shots will go in Elgin Baylor is nothing like dr. J nothing dr. J was smooth he was cool he was the ambassador of the NBA there will never be another guy like him dr. J it's not Elgin Baylor Elgin Baylor is not dr. J or Michael Jordan

Gregory Sweer he talked about Elgin’s influence on his game growing up in his autobiography. Sure Doc was more graceful and athletic, but he perfected a style that Elgin first started.

At his peak, Elgin led the Lakers in every statistical category. Watch the films. His FG% slipped because he was playing 1 on 5. Literally, the whole other team was quintuple-teaming him. In the league, he was the best rebounder among non-centers, the best assist man among nonpoint guards and the leading scorer except for Wilt. Today, kids can learn from him and other greats but he was making it up as he went along.

@MrTrininick0986 жыл бұрын
When you listen to the humility of guys like Elgin, Bill Russell gives you real appreciation of what essence of sports were and especially the black athlethe. Most my favorite guys Elgin is my number 1 guy, Penny Hardaway probably right behind him they both can score, set up team mates but Elgin Baylor rebounding and dominance can only be compared with Wilt, the record books just filled with their greatness. People have to remember back in those days you left your feet, guys bridged you on purpose as it was disrespectful to dunk, to be black and be kind of player he was, greater appreciation for his inner strength to express his game. Then he lead Lakers with Jerry West, how many teams have had two 30pt scorers have gone to finals or have accomplishments these guys have, they just ran it better oiled machine at the time and Celtics were a defense transition team in era of defense and rebounding. The better teams won but the character of Elgin Baylor just speaks loud in way others speak of him, wish Bill Russell or Oscar Robertson spoke it would've added to a great moment. Thanks to old school for bringing us here today.

Thank you for putting this so well and just exactly right. Elgin was in a class by himself. Humble and an extraordinarily great player - the best all around player I have ever seen. And an extraordinary human being as so many, including his 'bother', the incomparable Jerry West, attest to.
