I've watched her channel for quite sometime, way back before the current war. She has and continues to show life within Russia and her travels to other countries too. Since the start of this war she's referenced it several times, as best she could under the current limitations of doing so within Russia. Not once has she EVER promoted, agreed, nor condoned Putin/Russia's actions. She even interviewed a pro-Putin American whack-a-doo living in Russia. Her facial expressions alone when he spoke let you know exactly where her heart is. She has a lot to lose if she escapes Russia- family and finances. My sister-in-law is from St. Pete now living in the US. She got out several years ago but is now cutoff from her family and finances she left behind because of Putin's war. Not all Russians are bad my friend. It appears you've attempted to get views by disparaging someone else with a larger and more popular viewer base. I'll cover your same treatment of NFKRZ on that video's comments. If you want to berate Russian vloggers that are pro-Putin, go take a whack at Sergey Baklykov and his channel Baklykov. Live kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5OpfmqPZqdpeck This guy originally had some pretty decent content walking the streets of St. Pete showing Russian life. I had to unsubscribe from him when he became an arrogant, condescending, sarcastic, douchebag with his attempts at comedy in multiple videos mocking his unaffected lifestyle under sanctions. He's a full on "whatabouter" whenever he's questioned about the invasion of Ukraine. Pro-Putin POS that deserves your negative review. Leave Eli and NFKRZ be, they are a few of the good ones. Just watch ALL their videos in their ENTIRETY not just snippets you can mold to meet your agenda that all Russians suck and are propagandists.

I chose their videos because they are Russians who don’t appear to support the war but were not willing to take risks to oppose it and both whined on KZbin as if they were ‘victims’ … the only way ultimately to have peace is if there is a change of system in Russia otherwise Russia will continue to attack its neighbors when they disagree with them. As for other ‘worse’ Russian KZbinrs, sure I could react to all of them but what’s the point if they openly support the war? 🤷🏼

@@ConorClyneTsarExperience So you do understand the possible consequences of those risks for them if they were to openly and singlehandedly express their dislike for the war/Putin, right? Unfortunately it will take the masses of unhappy Russians to change their country not just a couple of vloggers spending 15yrs in the gulag for posting a video on their channel that Putin sucks. Again, your videos appear to be an attempt to garner views by bashing popular Russian vloggers that OPPOSE Putin's war and are stuck in a shitty situation. And yes, they are victims of being born into a backwards ass country with a bastard ruler and it's hell trying to change the system because that's how they designed the system.

@@ConorClyneTsarExperience I have been watching NFKRZ since 2016 and he is from the young generation whose parents did not like to publically about politics. This has left a mark on him because he did mention somewhere in his videos Russians in the Soviet era people disappeared when they spoke against the government something which Eli also mentioned in her Gulag video (if I remember correctly). NFKRZ is unlike other brainwashed Russians and he showed it time and time again by talking about the corruption of buisness men and politics numerous times even before the war started. Even before the war started Roman has been very careful with his wording for many years when he talks about Russian politics which is something he also mentioned in one of his videos when the war started. Russian citizen like him, even if they live abroad, try to either avoid political conversations on camera or are very careful with their wording because they dont want their relatives get in trouble with authorities something Roman also explained. This is exactly why Russians like Eli, Niki, Roman etc. can't directly tell their viewers donate money for Ukraine.

For Conor's education - it was when the USSR stole North Bucovina and Bessarabia from Romania that Romania decided to join the Nazi cause. It might be that Antonescu was predisposed to join the Nazi's because he himself was (as far as I know) ultra-right-wing, and was able to accept the Legionnaires into the government (only to eject them a couple months later when they tried to overthrow the government). Another aspect is that Romanians have been fighting for survival against Slavs for hundreds of years.

Highly highly recommend watching the Russian Roulette series - which actually started with the Russian takeover in Crimea. There was a related documentary he created, Selfie Soldiers, that documented postings on VK (Russia's equivalent to Facebook) by Russian soldiers, traced some of them into their involvement with the Battle of Debaltseva in 2015, and then he flew to far East Russia to a Tuvan city to try and talk with one of those soldiers. Simon is currently reporting for PBS News Hour and NY Times,

You touched on the issue of whether Russia is committing Genocide in Ukraine CURRENTLY. I have read the UN Convention on Genocide carefully, and have compared it to Russia's actions. The Convention does not focus solely on deaths, but for example creating conditions where so horrid for a population that they flee, or the act of taking children from their native population and giving them for adoption into a host population. Both are ways to eradicate a culture without taking the step of large-scale murder. I would like to hear your take - as a lawyer who formerly worked in International Relations - on what I've just said. And, yes, I 100% agree with you having carefully read Timofey Sergeytsev's article in Ria Novosti, that in the Russian Elite there is a call for mass scale killing and/or reeducation of Ukrainians meant to eradicate the Ukraine government/culture/language/etc, and having read carefully the Wikipedia article on Russification in Ukraine, I know that this has been a project of Russian Empire / USSR / Russian Federation for 300+ years. When I read up on Ukrainian Nationalism in the Wikipedia - I came away not knowing about Bandera's ideology, but knowing clearly that he stood for the principle of Ukraine being ruled by Ukrainians. The red/black flag coupled with the "Blood and Soil" phrase seems to have a different meaning from the similar Nazi phrase. Who are the Fascists? The ones who are effectively fighting to protect their government and cultural identity from aggressors? Or the ones who want to destroy another culture, believing that other culture is less-than? I think it's the latter.

Russians do their usual plan of acting all confused and innocent as if they have no idea why every single nation around Russia hates them and many despise Russia for the vast amounts of death and destruction they caused. After "liberating" half of Europe from German control Russia just replaced one type of dictatorship with another in many ways worse. The Germans system never put the entire planet at imminent risk of being murdered in nuclear war. Soviet Russia was so evil they simply had to develop nuclear weapons which they knew was a risk to all humanity, even now Russia is busy developing more nuclear weapons that could be used even though there is no situation where launching nuclear weapons is better than not using them.Even if Russia is attacked the better option for them and the world is to not launch their nuclear weapons, so there is no point in Russia having them. Its time all those Russian nukes were removed now that Russia has demonstrated they dont have the intelligence to have a single nuke, never mind thousands of them. The entire world would be so much better off not being threatened with total death and destruction twice a week by Russia. I think its time for the Russian empire to be broken up into around 23 new nations so that the those held under the dictatorship of Moscow can at last be the masters of their own destiny and vote for a government thats not thousands of miles away. There are nothing but advantages to breaking up this evil Russian dictatorship, its better for the planet and the people under the Russian empire, the quicker the break up of Russia the better for everyone.

"this has been a project of Russian Empire / USSR / Russian Federation for 300+ years" To expand, Russification isn't limited to Ukraine: you see the same pattern in the Baltic states, Crimea (the Tartars), Ossetia, Transnistria and so forth. Alas, not entirely unique to Russia either. The Swedification of Scania when annexed form Denmark was particularly brutal, but as late as in the 1960's, the pupils in Tornedalen routinely had their fingers smacked with a ruler for speaking anything but Swedish, which is the direct reason neither I nor my cousins speak meankäli as our parents did not pass that along to us.

I don't know whether you know it or no, I won't be surprised if you familiar with it, but this concept of the "Great Patriotic War" was made up in 1965, in twenty years time after World War II ended. That year, it was the first time when Victory Day (it was intentionally "postponed" from 8th of May to 9th) was widely celebrated in Soviet Union. Before this, there weren't even an attempts to celebrate it, because a lot of survivor veterans were still relatively young and perfectly remembered all the horrors of this war. That there wasn't a lot to be proud, it was just a long sequence of mass murders, rapings, lootings and other war crimes from both sides. They knew that actually war isn't only about heroism, honour, nobility and bravery; it's mostly a blood, dirt, fear, intestines sticking out of stomach, torn up bodies, cut off legs, hands and heads. But new generation was growing up, and Communist party decided to create such a holiday for them "to get them remembered a great feat of Soviet people". For this purpose, they dropped off only a part of world war since 22nd of June 1941 when Germany invaded USSR, and called it a "Great Patriotic War". Soviets skipped an "awkward' part of it when they divided seized territories of Eastern and Central Europe with Germany: they've already basically participated in the war not only by seizing but also by murdering (Katyn' massacre) and deporting many thousands of Poles, Ukrainians, people from the Baltic states (mostly Latvians) to Siberia and sending them to Gulag. They deliberately diminished a role of American lend lease to create a facade of "decisive contribution by USSR in defeating a Nazism" by writing in a history books that an overall share of lend lease was only 4% while actually it was just huge. Soviet Union simply couldn't have resist without lend lease. And gradually a Victory Day became the main holiday in Soviet Union, probably, right after New Year. And there was an interesting tendency observed in Soviet Union and Russia: the less achievements they had, the bigger and pompous this "holiday" became, with all these foolish parades, they tried to create an impression for their citizens and for all the world that USSR was almost the only one who defeated Nazis. Especially in the latest years of Putin it acquired blatantly ugly forms with fake veterans and the same fake "grandfathers on sticks" (with photos of them) in the hands of "immortal Regiment" procession participants (and most of them didn't even knew the names of their "grandfathers" who were fighting in this war). So, the last 5-6 years conscious people call it a "победобесие" ("victory-madness"). But most of Russian people, and this Eli among them, take this "victory-madness" for granted, not even thinking that maybe it's worth to celebrate it in some other way. Just as a Memorial Day, without these noisy processions.

The successor to the Polish Home army continued on resistance to Soviet oppression until the early 1960's. In post war Soviet films they are the bad guys - the bandits. But Andrzej Wajda's early films give an alternate view, particularly the classic Ashes and Diamonds. Some of the Ukrainian films give an inkling of the complexities of a country in effectively a civil war among nationalists, Soviets and Romanians. I doubt many countries have historically unwilling suffered so much at the hands of others than Ukraine and Poland. However my great grandfather’s father (my great great grandfather) was a winemaker in Romania and he said when the Russians passed through his village, the Russians would just enter into any house or establishment and took whatever they wanted. They found out about my great great grandfather’s wine cellar and they stormed in there and drank nearly all the wine from their dirty stinky boots. That’s right, they took their boots off and used them as cups. My great great grandfather also said most of them were wearing clocks around their necks for some odd reason. Now my great great grandmother from my grandmother’s side of the family owned a small pub during WWII and she said the Russian troops drank at her pub until they were past out drunk, and surprisingly they even paid for the drinks. However they overstayed their visit and my great uncle (my great great grandmother’s nephew) was getting mad that they were still in the pub, so he grabbed a bunch of soda foam and sprayed it on all the Russian soldiers until they cleared out of the pub. My great great grandmother said she was scared for her nephew’s life when he started spraying them with foam thinking that the Russian soldiers would kill him for that, but they were so drunk that couldn’t even stand let alone put up a fight.

Russia did not win the war by itself. Russia likes to ignore the fact that the Western Allies had to commit huge naval and air resources to keep supply routes open, keep Japan off Russia's back and deny Germany important metals, oil and access to Russia''s back door. The strategic air war gave Germany no other choice than to put most of it''s resources into air defence, keeping a vast amount of materiel away from the Russian front. Russia relied on US vehicles for transport and the aircraft they received could have been enough to tip the scales. Stalin was so concerned about the narrative that he had the labels changed on American rations. Basically, Russia only had to operate in one theatre thanks to the Western Allies.

They can be split into 2 categories: the ones that are directly supporting the Russian politics (usually they made videos regarding the 9th of may filled with patriotism) and others that are ambiguous and don't adopt a clear tone. For day-to-day news from Russia I watch the subtitled videos of Maxim Katz - he has a very clear position. I also watch the videos of Ilya Varlamov: he's a bit nostalgic for the Soviet Union, mocks the current politics and realities of Russia and criticizes (although on a more subtle tone) Putin's war.

In the memoir by George Robertson, the former UK Labour politician and Secretary General of NATO, he recalls a conversation he had with Putin in the early 2000s. Putin asked why Russia hadn't been invited into NATO. Robertson replied. You don't get invited. You need to apply. That Russian exceptionalism has now fed into the Russian nationalism which permeates through Russians. I see it in Russian friends and in some of the Russian KZbinrs I watch. The worst thing about nationalism is that it creates an enemy. And for that enemy there is no empathy. With people adopting grievance, victimhood and self absorption. Admittedly we have English exceptionalism here embodied by Johnson, but it seems on the wane, but that is for another discussion. I've watched Eli's content for quite a while, through her time studying in Italy, and particularly since the invasion. She demonstrated the same exceptionalism. In one she was upset that people were commenting in an aggressively rude manner about her and her parents. I'm not condoning people being aggressive in their comments, but she seemed affronted. The exceptionalism of how dare you. Where she became the victim rather than the real victims in Ukraine. The strength of feeling seemed to completely surprise her, when such an act of aggression by Russia on Ukraine, completely unprovoked, was obviously going to raise passions and anger when innocent people are being bombed and killed. She also did a video where she was shopping for refugees in Russia that had fled Ukraine. But didn't seemed to see any irony in that, that they wouldn't have had to flee if it wasn't for the invasion. As one Russian friend said to me, who had studied both in a Russian University and one in the UK. In Russia they teach you what to think, rather than to think. That was completely different in the UK. You were taught to research, analyse and weigh probabilities of different views. So the march of the Immortal Regiment is a moving sight to see. But it is only a partial history. Of sacrifice and victory, that feeds into the grievance that the west doesn't understand it was the USSR that won the war. Their grievance has some truth to it, but until there is also a understanding of what went before and after to have the bigger picture, then it is fertile ground for Putin to whip up nationalism and convince many there are nazis everywhere but in the Kremlin.

"She also did a video where she was shopping for refugees in Russia that had fled Ukraine. I think Eli's understanding was that the refugees were poor Russian-speaking civilians from the Donbas who had been brutalised by "Azov Nazis" for years but have now been rescued by that nice Mr Putin in his special operation. Remember one of the commonest propaganda tropes is that Kyiv has deliberately bombed 14,000 innocent Russian speakers in the Donbas. It's still endlessly repeated in KZbin comments by Kremlin bots and western useful idiots alike. And I'm sure Eli believes every word.

Your post reflects the typical Western ignorance about the war. Russia has been receiving refugees from the war since 2014. Western Ukraine has a nationalist ideology and views the people of Eastern Ukraine (who are genetically identical to them, btw) as "Orcs" to be exterminated. In the UK, all you get is propaganda. It is a full on New World Order society where statues to the past are destroyed and even the events of last week are memory holed if they conflict with the narrative the government is pushing this week. In Russia they teach actual history. Even a not terribly educated Russian knows more about the history of Ukraine than a Western "expert" who works for the US State Dept or British Foreign Office.

I have watched these Russian interviews Russian street interviews for three months now, and I must tell you, while many of you seem sweet and inoffensive, there's no way I can't notice, NO ONE IS BOMBING THE STREETS YOU ARE FILMING ON. Or ANYWHERE in Russia. That no one since WW2 has actually invaded Russian soil, even then when YOU THOUGHT that included countries that have since decided, since the WALL fell, they wanted NOTHING TO DO WITH YOU. That they were sovereign countries. Yet, you have repeatedly attacked them. And the West has, stupidly chosen to look the other way. For various reasons, often civil war .BUT NOW, YOUR , AND I REPEAT, YOUR GOVERNMENT, has gone WAY TOO FAR. Ukrain was SUPPOSED to be a sister country. But from Feb 24, YOU HAVE BEEN, for ALL PRACTICAL PURPOSES, NOT JUST NAZI GERMANY, but so much WORSE than Nazi GERMANY.

SO ...all you "supposedly sweet people. I have to notice.. you are ALL IN CITIES where the western ECONOMIC influence, and affluence, are happening. The Russian boys that are dying, many horribly, burned to death in tanks, ARE ALL RURAL. The economic blooming of Russia never made it to RURAL RUSSIA. That is 5/6 of Russia. Most are economically desperate. The military seen as the only economic way out for THEIR FAMILY. THOSE ARE THE RUSSIAN BOYS, DYING HORRIBLY IN UKRAIN. But ALL OF YOU, FAT AND HAPPY IN THE CITIES...are unaffected by this. THE DEAD, ON BOTH SIDES. ARE STILL...DEAD. Your lack of interest only affects...their friends and loved ones. Because, you seem to feel, there is no end to...poor Russian boys. SO WHY SHOULD IT AFFECT YOU. IN WW2 Stalin threw Russian bodies against the Germans, until the Germans ran out of ammunition. Only the soldiers at the front had guns. The ones at the back were told "take the guns off the dead". What the hell makes you think you're NOT the guys at the back??? And since when did you become a country when POOR RUSSIAN BOYS ARE NOT YOU ???

@@JohnBuck-rc5te I'd like to explain something, since you seem a fair man, and receptive. No one except for Napolean and Hitler, has ever been stupid enough to think invading Russia was a good idea. And they lost. Badly. And inspite of the paranoia carefully nutured by all you past leaders, to unify Russian people against a common enemy, to take their mind off their REAL problems.... ...There is NO ONE in the West who spends any time plotting to invade your. country. It is not even remotely a "thing", much less part of our culture. I would have noticed. The two World Wars were ghastly for everyone. Europe and America were determined that the human race would, FINALLY, never make that mistake agiain. Nuclear War was unthinkable, to the sane. We would learn, also finally, to play nicely with others. As well as insure the safety of those now civilized enough to agree to this. Nice often comes off as weak, to a would be aggressor. The EU and NATO agreements, as well as others across the World, would be mostly ALL ABOUT THAT. Unfortunately Russian leaders took exception to that. Communism they decided, would consume the World. So there was STILL someone who would destroy our way of life. I don't mean perfect. We are hardly that. But we try. The Cold War years were terrifying. The posibility of Nuclear War should terrify anyone. And if you look at a map of the time, you'll see, In sheer land mass alone, Russian influence, Communism, China included, seemed to be winning. In Asia, Africa, and South America. Our President Kennedy would see Russian Nukes in Cuba, right on our doorstep. Much smaller proxy Wars would be fought because of it. We won in South Korea. We lost in Vietnam. It was 20 yrs between WW1and WW2. IT would be 40 yrs till 1990. And it was an uneasy peace, held together mostly with glue. We ALL knew that. So it was with great relief in the West, when the WALL fell. Frankly, we were as startled as you. But you might listen to a Rock song at that time, that sums up our hopes for Russia, and Russians. It's"Winds of Change". It's poignant and sweet. America has an extroidinary habit of extending a hand to former enemies, fairly quickly. A sort of all's forgiven lets move forward. Possibly because we are such a polyglot of nationalities. Or maybe because it is most practical.Japanese and Germans would be far better off, inspite of actually LOSING.. They would have a new very beneficial, direction. And they would run with it. This would be Russia, we thought. Putin would play Mr Nice Guy, to the World. Russia was in tatters, with hopes but no real direction, or idea how to get there. Putin saw Russia seriously needed both Foreign investment, and foreign expertise. Unlike Germany or Japan, capitalism was not only an alien concept, but illegal. You were clueless. We gave you McDonald's. They never expected a profit. They were too far from their wholesale supply line. It was illegal to take rubles out of Russia, anyway. But McDonald's said, Hi. We are America. We are not scary. We are fun. We are only hamburger. You'll like us. And you did. McDonald's would be followed by others, and an introduction to the wonders of capitalism. Goods unheard of before A better, more comfortable life. There would be, we thought, a real possibility of World Peace. Of leaders with shared goals and values. Of mutual commerce that would bind us together. But Putin would play MR NICE GUY, until he didn't. Moldova and Georgia weren't NATO members. There was little we could do. But that would be a dress rehearsal for the invasion of Ukraine. But, unlike the other two, Ukraine was in a position to fight back, themselves. "I don't need a ride out," Zalenski said. "I need ammunition." Which is where we are now.

Hello. Pleasure to have encountered your channel. I have some questions for you or for anyone reading this that has some knowledge on this situation. Ive watched many of Eli's videos and enjoyed them so my knee jerk reaction was to think that you were being overly critical of someone using generalizations. However, I am also critical enough of myself to wonder if maybe I'm being niave. For example, she claimed 23 million Russians died in WWII. You contend that she should have said Soviet citizens because Ukraine, Beleruse (forgive my spelling) were part of that number. The impression this leaves me with is that you dont think this is a generalization that she would make? Refering to Ukrainians as Russian soldiers in WWII? I'm a U.S. citizen so if I said nearly 420 thousand New Yorkers lost their lives in WW2 would I be making a comparable mistake to her rather than saying 420 thousand U.S. citizens? Also, is not much of her favorable language do to concern of government reactions such as her interview of spitznatz (again, spelling..sorry) or her favorable view of her relative who fought in Ukrain? I admit that you make a good point about your concern for propoganda when you bring up the fact that she is speaking in English so who her audience is makes a huge difference when talking about who her relatives in armed service were and what they did or when interviewing Russian soecial forces. Thankyou to whoever responds to all this. I know its long, with spelling errors and shot out from the hip. Im typing this from my phone.

Even though history of my country i.e. history of Finland, has been some kind hobby for me, I do not like the situation that we have to discuss on WW2 era and what happened that time so much. The whole world should build better future instead of being stuck in the past. However, I think we have no choice because Russia is spreading its misinformation and blatant lies what happened back then. I guess we could still accept e.g. victory day celebration in Russia without criticism if history were not distorted to give reasoning for modern day atrocities by Russians. After all, even though Finland lost in WW2 (but never surrendered) after being surrounded by two horrible dictatorships (Nazi Germany and Communistic Russia), it was better that Germany was defeated. Certain Russian special forces known as partisans in Finnish history writing committed horrible crimes for Finnish civilians such as killing very young children and rapes before kills (just like what takes place in Ukraine now) during continuation war 1941-1944. Of course, I do not know if Eli's grandfather was part of these criminal military units (I do not know if special forces equals to partisans in Russian history writing) but if he were, maybe Eli should not be just less proud of grandpa's actions but totally ashamed and sorry for his grandpa being possibly a murderer and raper. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_partisans_in_Finland By the way, in Russian counterpart wiki-page, Russian writers start in the first paragraph "The raids killed hundreds of Finnish soldiers and civilians (many of whom were armed)." Well, people of small villages were all killed among those were tens of young children and women and elderly men. Why that is not emphasized in Russian language wiki-page? Besides, what I have learnt about Russian partisans they mostly tried to attack unarmed civilian villages and reported to their superiors about "eliminating garrisons". That is why I consider "many of whom were armed" part in Russian wiki-page very misleading in its starting paragraph based on Russian partisans willingness to kill civilians. Hopefully, Russians meet the true nature about their deeds in WW2 on some day.

One in this should mention that the partisan groups had quotas given by high command to fulfil, so if their sector did not contain actual military, they went and attacked villagers instead to avoid charges of treason, much like the NKVD had their quota of spies to catch that got filled regardless if there was any actual spies or not. What I am getting at here is that these actions can not be attributed to simply some front line men going rogue, it was a system designed by default to produce such actions; whether that was deliberate or not is up for debate given the remarkable lack of organisation that characterised the Soviet system. Applebaum's book Gulag gives an excellent insight of this, and also shows the parallels to the Nazi concentration camp (dis)organisation.

In 1938 (despite France and Britain backing down at Munich) the Soviets continued to offer military assistance to Czechoslovakia including 700 fighter aircraft and parachute regiments (if requested). This they hoped would force Germany to back down. Germany was weaker in 1938 than a year later. (Partly because they took all the Czechoslovakian military equipment) Despite interest from the Czechoslovakian military the civilian government refused the Soviet offer, and simultaneously Poland attacked Czechoslovakia along with Germany. Not an Eli fan myself. She did two very highly propagandistic videos on visiting Chechnya which, honestly, look as if they were done with the cooperation of the Kadyrov Tourist Board. She interviewed someone who was (as far as I can tell) part of Kadyrov's security forces about "what's Chechnya like." Is it naivete? I seriously doubt it. She had another video asking Russians if LGBTQ people should be concerned about visiting Russia. None of the people she interviewed were LGBTQ (or, at least, willing to ID as such). The Spetsnaz one (which I think has been taken down) was just disturbing... like she was just doing outdoor recreation instead of trying to discuss government forced who've committed genocide. She also mentioned how Russia is "helping" Ukrainian refugees without explaining how those refugees are either pro-Russian from Donbass or were Ukrainians who were forced (really kidnapped) to go to Russia by the Russian military. They're mostly being warehoused in the Russian Far East. I would categorize that as ethnic cleansing. Her remarks about the Russian invasion are almost exclusively concerned about "Russophobia". Again, if you saw a German fraulein making such films about Germany in 1941, you would call it ugly propaganda.

She said she's not proud of what is going in ukraine but she have not taken the step of rebutting kremlin's war. About her economical.means and the never stopping travelling inside Russia, well I think she was approached by some gov people and offered money and logistics if she travel around Russia promoting tourism which is not a bad thing but please in Cecenia Italy and Usa issued a warnong not to travel in these regions so are our govs totally stupid? I am mixed about Eli.. I had been watching her travel videos around Russia before the invasion of Ukraine. She makes some very good ones. I didn't think that she was political. Most people have a pride in their country.. maybe take for granted what they are taught about their country's history etc without putting thought into it. She did interview a horror of a foreigner in Russia who was stomach churching in his attitude to Ukraine and his support for it's destruction by Putin. She let him speak but later did a joint video with another Russian vlogger who has since left the country and they discussed that interview because she got a lot of hate comments and accused of bring financed by the government or tourist board and a supporter of the war. She described how she has always been totally self made instead and self supporting. I keep in mind when assessing Russians that many are non political, don't get involved, as most people don't in other countries, and if they do they risk fines, loss of jobs or possible imprisonment. How many Russians, not exposed by their job on social media, have just continued doing their job, living their lives, and if they are against the invasion of Ukraine don't say it for those reasons but are not cancelled for it because they are not online figures? There seems a huge divorce in Russia between the political gangster rulers and elites and the ordinary civil society. People seem to just get on with their lives and avoid what the government may or may not be doing and public debate cannot happen. Is Eli just doing that? Like probably most Russians? Just continuing with her video job as always? Is she guilty for not becoming a political opposition vlogger instead? I don't know the answer. Am I to judge her on that? It's often easy for people in safe places, not directly affected by what is going on in another country to judge others.. others who may have to tread a fine line we don't fully know about.. between family, job, public and private survival requirements... Maybe not possible to talk about certain matters without falling out with family.. or even having to leave your country possibly never able to return.. as we know many Russians have been forced to do losing everything.. How many in Europe or North America would be willing to do that? I don't know what Eli's views truly are on the invasion of Ukraine and I don't feel I can make a judgement of her apparent apolitical stance, or silence on political matters in Russia.. I'm not the one who would be putting my livelihood at risk - or possibly rejection by family if they are brainwashed by propaganda - by making an anti government statement if those are my feelings. In comparison I know people not under the dangers of speaking out in the West and who could inform themselves but who have been brainwashed by Ritter and Redacted into believing the Putin propaganda about Ukraine.. which shocks and appals me.. Who is more guilty eh?

@@shooster5884 Yeah, but she has on her own made statements about "Russophobia" and the like, which we all know is the propaganda creation of the Kremlin. Any dislike of Russia in the West is the direct result of its actions, and there is no independent phenomenon of "Russophobia". She makes her income from KZbin, so will not directly state her position as it would lose her 90% of her revenue, but her position is clear nevertheless.

The Charge of the Light Brigade BY ALFRED, LORD TENNYSON Half a league, half a league, Half a league onward, All in the valley of Death Rode the six hundred. “Forward, the Light Brigade! Charge for the guns!” he said. Into the valley of Death Rode the six hundred. II “Forward, the Light Brigade!” Was there a man dismayed? Not though the soldier knew Someone had blundered. Theirs not to make reply, Theirs not to reason why, Theirs but to do and die. Into the valley of Death Rode the six hundred. III Cannon to right of them, Cannon to left of them, Cannon in front of them Volleyed and thundered; Stormed at with shot and shell, Boldly they rode and well, Into the jaws of Death, Into the mouth of hell Rode the six hundred. IV Flashed all their sabres bare, Flashed as they turned in air Sabring the gunners there, Charging an army, while All the world wondered. Plunged in the battery-smoke Right through the line they broke; Cossack and Russian Reeled from the sabre stroke Shattered and sundered. Then they rode back, but not Not the six hundred. V Cannon to right of them, Cannon to left of them, Cannon behind them Volleyed and thundered; Stormed at with shot and shell, While horse and hero fell. They that had fought so well Came through the jaws of Death, Back from the mouth of hell, All that was left of them, Left of six hundred. VI When can their glory fade? O the wild charge they made! All the world wondered. Honour the charge they made! Honour the Light Brigade, Noble six hundred! Citation link: www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/45319/the-charge-of-the-light-brigade

The non-agression pact between nazi Germany and the USSR is the consequence of the Munich agreements between nazi Germany, France and the UK. Stalin offered 100.000 troops to curtail Hitler's expansion but the western powers expected nazi Germany to invade the USSR, the Lebensraum and General Plan Ost was well known to them. For this, they declined. So you are projecting the standard anti-communist western propaganda.

I stumbled on one of her videos -- one was more than enough -- where she was yammering on about volunteering to help refugees from Donetsk and Lugansk. Not once did she mention why those people were refugees: It's a footnote to the current war, but a day or two before the Russian invasion, those people were rousted from their homes and told to hit the streets and head east, because (according to the Kremlin) an invasion *from* Ukraine was imminent. It was a pure propaganda stunt, ginned up to manufacture a cassus belli. Arguably those refugees (nearly all pensioners, women, children) were the very first people to be displaced by Putin's little adventure -- in the name of "protecting" them, naturally. And darling little Eli mentioned this not at all. It was enough to convince me that she's got no integrity, so why bother watching? Anyway I'm glad to see her dishonesty and complicity skewered in this video.

You have the right to be critical of Eli but in doing so do not use gender as a starting point for being dismissive. It undermines your valid premise that the Russian invasion of Ukraine is wholly wrong and the Russian people should recognise how the past is being used as justification for Putin and his acolytes to wage an imperialistic war. A nostalgic lens distorts this reality and you are right to highlight this.
