Welcome to the Far East. It's the least populated region of Russia - only about 5% of the population lives here. Vladivostok is the capital of Primorsky Krai and it’s the second-largest city in the Russian Far East with a population of about 600,871. The city is famous for its harbor location as the home port of the Russian Pacific Fleet and being the final stop on the Trans-Siberian Railway.

Hello from Minnesota USA! We are at the approximate same latitude as Vladivostok. We have a "piece" of Vladivostok here in our Minnesota Zoo in our Russia's Grizzly Coast section with amur tigers, Russian grizzlies, and exhibits relating to Lake Primorsky area and Kamchatka region. Exhibits are all in English and Russian as well. We do have a lot of Russian speaking immigrants here. So fascinating!

The lovely Vladivostok! My first ever exposure to Russia the Country, Russia the People, and Russia the Culture! That was in 1998, I was a young US Marine, we did a port-of-call in Vladivostok as a visiting US Military forces, pretty much a political dog & pony show between the US and Russia politicians & military leaders. We stayed there for a week to help boost the local economy through commerce and building good foreign relations; i.e. by partying, getting drunk, meeting some partying Russian people, and shopping! Awesome experience, interactions with locals were amazing, they were very receptive to us, and it was great all around. I think, and I can speak for the other fellow US Marines in my squad, was one of best experience was we were just hanging around outside a bar, with some old timers, just drinking, talking about home, families, and showing pictures of each others families. No politics BS. Just regular people from having fun & getting drunk with Stoli! The coolest thing happened though was, the Russian merchant marines we met in Vladic, we met them again in Quingdao port! This time in Quingdao, us the US Marines, Russian merchant marine, and a Chinese Army Officer, was actually getting drunk and hanging around at the Chinese Officer's home/store....and just having fun! No politics - Russians, American, & Chinese...all regular people...just hanging around telling stories about home to each other. Best ever experience. After Vladic, we went straight to Quingdao for another another political dog & pony show, stay a week to get drunk and party, and onward to Korea's Chinhae & Pohang port for similar thing.

Greetings from Arizona (a U.S. state bordering California) Thank you for sharing this video. I really enjoyed your chat with the Oceanographer too. I'd love to hear his stories of traveling on that research ship. 🙂 When I was in school and we studied Russian geography, I wondered why this area of Russia was not an economic powerhouse given its location and access to East Asia and the sea. Your video taught me that it was a "closed city", and it seems like it was closed even to other Russians. 😞 My classmates and I also asked our Geography teacher about why we never heard much about the eastern areas of Russia, and the focus was always on the western side of Russia and its interactions with Europe. We did not get a good answer from our teacher at that time. Now many years later, videos like these help fill in those knowledge gaps. Thank you again for sharing.

Warm greetings from Russia. The far eastern cities are just a bit younger than Russia's west part, where russians come from, so they have a bit less history in them. And during all times of history the main points of power concentration was capital cities, so cities of the far east were a bit on their own. Vladivostok is definetly one of the hidden gems of Russia. I have visited the eastern part of the country and I simply loved it there. The population at the far east is not that big. Therefor the communities there are more dence, people are different, they are more helping and responsible, compared to huge western cities like Moscow, I highly respect that. The nature is beautiful there - a crazy mix of russian taiga and asian rainforests, bears and tigers roam the woods, all these rocks and ocean, and the vibe of chinese, korean and native far eastern siberian cultures. Winters are still quite harsh there due to cold currents in the seas nearby. I haven't manage to see the Vladivostok myself, but I hope to go there one day. I know a few people from Vladivostok and I always asked them "why people are tend to leave it?" because honestly for me it looks like a great city to live. Well the problems are quite obvious, there are less jobs, and not many companies and businesses presented at Vladivostok. Inconvenient time zone makes it not easy to work with Moscow, where most of companies' head offices usually are. The far east also lacks a lot of basic infrastructure - there are less cities, less highways and roads, less factories and production in general, less jobs and the cost of living is quite high, because of people of all the federal district tend to move there and real estate is not enough for everyone, so for locals it make sense to move to Moscow, since real estate prices are around the same, but salaries are at least two times higher in Moscow than in Vladivostok. That's a shame, because Vladivostok is a special place, one of a kind, uniquely combining many very different cultures. Awesome place, may it never lose its unique spirit. And I hope that more foreign guests will be able to see it too

Oysters have no taste, but if they’re salty and big and juicy… much better to the palate…!! We, in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA., eat them, raw and fried, if fried, oysters are covered in a flour mixed with other ingredients, and tossed into the hot oil, very briefly and they are delicious… for raw oysters, we make a sauce of ketchup, horseradish, Worcestershire sauce, plenty lemon juice and Tabasco sauce to spicy it up… and oysters are dipped into this sauce and swallowed one by one… also delicious.. may eat soda crackers too and your favorite drink…!!! Also, fried oysters are used to make a sandwich on a loaf of French bread 🥖 or baguette, with just butter on it…. Other dressings are optional..! Good video, certainly shows the other side of Russia, much more cosmopolitan city..!! The USA should conduct turist tours of the city and surroundings..!! It’s beautiful…!!!! Вы дали мне представление о культуре, из которой она происходила, и многое в Диане теперь приобретает больше смысла! Большое тебе спасибо, Эли! ---------- Greetings from Scotland! I enjoyed your video of Vladivostok so much Eli! For 6 years I have followed an incredible young Russian singer called Diana Ankudinova who was born in Ussuriysk, just North of Vladivostok. She was adopted by a nice family in Arsenyev who moved to Togliatti, then Moscow. Now she is 19yo and rapidly becoming famous in countries all around the world! You gave me an insight in the culture that she came from and a lot of things about Diana now make more sense! Thank you so much Eli!
