Traveling through Eastern Europe's Buddhist republic... on a camel

400 years ago the descendants of Mongolian Oirats (The Kalmyks) migrated to Europe. They created the Kalmyk Khanate from 1635 to 1779 in the south of the European part of Russia territory. Today they form a majority in Kalmykia, located in the Kalmyk Steppe, on the western shore of the Caspian Sea. They are the only traditionally Buddhist people who are located within Europe.

This is from Aryan (either East Iranic: Khotanese Saka, Sogdian; or Siberian Aryan: Tagar culture, etc.). The same like bağator < bagatura and otsog < Bactrian-alike āčšo(-go), Persian âtišak "small fire" > Russian očag "fireplace". Compare to Persian ore "yes".

Oirad means forest folk, Dzungars means left flank in Mongolian. Literally the tribe from the forest made up the left flank of the Mongol empire at its peak expansion. So Pushkin didnt like our tea. Well its his loss. Its a hearty drink that helps you survive the harsh winter.

Excellent video! We also have Bactrian camels with double humps in the cold desert of Ladakh, India of all places, especially in the Hunder area, part of the old Silk Road. The locals also fallow the Gelugpa sect of Buddhism as in Tibet.

As long as the arms merchants make money off wars, they will always want to frame somebody as the evil meanie nation. Buryatia is another region of Russia I find very fascinating. I know you covered this region a lot in many videos, Eli but this area fascinates me a lot. I love the national costumes and festivals of this region.

Kalmyks are very similar to Mongolians in terms if culture. And Mongolians are super close to Buryats, their languages are pretty close. Back in the early 1920s they were considered the same people. I'm from Irkutsk oblast, Buryats live there traditionally. My best friends in high school were Buryat girls.

p.s. I follow another source out of Russia that also does throat singing, and I’m sure you’re familiar with them, the Siberian indigenous folk-rock-jazz fusion group Otyken. They are doing a lot to preserve and revive their culture. A piece where you visit with them when you get up Krasnoyarsk way would be a great treat.

Interesting to have a strong Mongol based culture so far west. Did not know Kalmycia was a western region Mongols stayed and their culture endured. Right next door to the Caucus and just above Iran. Russia truly is highly diverse with the good thing cultures have been conserved similar to their ancient heritage. So windy there - and then so hot in the summertime. Hi Eli! It must be recognized that these Republics, in which nomadic peoples and people of other religions live, have many things to teach. First I noticed the importance of knowing the Russian language because, knowing this language, allows you to communicate with any ethnic people of Russia, therefore, go anywhere in Russia. Knowing Russian is also useful for traveling by speaking to the local people you visit and having interactions with them, otherwise it doesn't seem like a journey, but a simple sterile transit through any Russian place. I would like to drink the drinks you described in the video because they sound very interesting and great. Furthermore, I don't know Russian drinks, apart from vodka, but they really attract my curiosity and I think they are very special. It is equally wonderful to see and listen to these emigrants from Mongolia with their traditional clothes, songs and music that seem to have stopped time many centuries ago. I really appreciate that people like them, in such an advanced world, have made the choice not to abandon their ancient customs and, as a livelihood, continue to be shepherds, taking their sheep and camels to graze on the Russian steppes which are lost as far as the eye can see. I wonder how good the products they produce will be through the milk of these animals or the processing of their meat. It amazed me and I understood the guttural sound because they do it. It is a sound that surely only Kalmyks can make and it would be interesting to hear choirs of Kalmyk singers in plays or operas. Kalmuchya may seem like a cold and uninhabited Republic, but if people so rich in customs and traditions live there, you can most likely become attached to such a place. I thank you for having brought us to know this other Republic and its wonderful people and I greet you and hug you. 😊

@francescocursio....I like your explanation as to the use of the Russian language by ethnic minorities. By mastering the official language they avoid being second-class citizens and further get exposed to the whole world as in this vlog. This is a wise decision, Russian is a powerful international language, What I find interesting is that even larger national groups such as Chechens, Tatars, Buriats, Degastanis and others speak fluently Russian. Kazakhstan is an independent country yet Russian is their official language.

There is certainly a certain importance in knowing the Russian language because in addition to communicating with 145 million Russians, you can also communicate with the people of all the nations that were part of the former USSR. This is not the only importance, it is also the fact that you can travel in the largest country in the world, therefore, knowing the Russian language breaks down those mental borders for which it acts as a passport to go anywhere in Russia and speak with any Russian and we must remember that in Russia English is not that well known, therefore, in some places knowing English is totally useless.

All education in Russia is in Russian. In republics you will have 1-2 lessons of the language of the Republic in a week too. No mater you are Russian, Kalmyk, Mari, Sami, Tatar, etc.

2:50 This is a classic yurt just like would be found in Mongolia or Yakutsk. With enough carpeting on the floor and lining the walls, a fire in the middle with a smoke vent at the peak can keep people reasonably warm even when outdoors the wind chill is minus 80 Fahrenheit. For every mile per hour of wind, subtract about two degrees F to get the approximate wind chill adjustment. Americans started using the wind chill factor to scale cold equivalence because of the severe cold and simultaneous wind we encountered during the Korean War circa 1950.
