Toyota Hilux Surf 1996, Mod Overview and Demo Run (3rd Gen 4Runner)

Here is a modification overview video of my gen 3 surf.
This was made as a sort of farewell to the mighty truck which has served me nearly 3 years now, as well as an advertising aid to show potential buyers the efforts that have gone into this vehicle.

Thats a sick rig man, I have a 2000 4runner with factory manual and the 3.4 V6 here in the states, and I'd really like to get one of these turbo diesels with the manual but cant seem to find them very easily on the net. Are the manuals with the turbo diesels more rare in the 3rd gens down under as they are in America? Cheers

Here in Argentina most of them are turbo diesel 3.0. They were sold under the name of SW4.

Hey Man, Love the setup, just bought a 94 Surf absolutely love it, now anting to do some upgrades and the engine is definitely on the priority list, where about did you get your top mount from and how difficult was it to install? Cheers

Top mount was from a later model 1kd I think 🤔 Obviously with my custom intake manifold and throttle body delete, things were easier then trying to make the non intercooled manifold suit the intercooler. But if you were to look for a setup, you're best to look for one which includes the manifold and piping required. You'll see with my one, on the output side of the IC the flow goes rearward, that is the later model intercooler. On the earlier model the output goes downward, can be harder to fit without the correct adapter plate or intake setup

We have to run some sort of flare if the wheel sticks out past the factory ones, the further you go, the bigger rubber or plastic flare you gotta put on.

Kia ora, question bro - did you do much towing. Got the same rig, tempted to buy a small 11ft caravan but a little nervous - knowing Surf's reputation for overheating. Hopefully the intercooled 3l are a bit better though. Anyone else with an answer, be stoked to hear from ya. Chur

An intercooled surf runs better than an none intercooled. For towing, it’s really depends, how far the trip and the weight cap of what you are towing. An intercooler should keep you going without overheating but it all depends on what you are towing and how much you push your engine on your trip. I hope that helps? cheers

Yep sure did, went to 4.3s first, then when I broke them I went to 4.5s. Absolutely a great thing to do! 4.5s with 35s, was like 4.1s with 31s on my speedo. Healthy as f*** for the motor too

@@israelrodriguez6986 yup for sure, but if you can't find them, and you find 4.5s instead, then that would be perfect too. 4.8s obviously the best, but you can't get them for Kzn185s unless you buy brand new crown & pinion sets (as far as I'm aware). You won't find them out from factory it rigs being scrapped unless you're in the USA

We have a very limited supply in both tyres and wheel selections. Being part of a few 4runner pages on fb that are states based has shown me that. There are so many wheel options you have that I wish we had. And tyres, well heck I swear there's 20x more makers and styles to choose from. You guys are very lucky 😊 We just get cheap knock offs

There's a factory bung in there on the intake side, between piston 3 and 4, around the oil cooler area. Take the bung out and find a suitable adapter Bush to fit in your water temp probe

Yes that is true, however the new power output of the motor ment that it did not feel much extra strain when some extra load was added. But yes correct, and also the 'throttle up' button does not work anymore either which was always handy when jump starting someone elses vehicle
