Wow - so well explained, clearly I was one of your time bombs once I got over 60, stopped flexibility and weight training but still kept bombing it out there with many much younger than me. Unfortunately something had to give and that was my lower back - now time to rectify as best possible to still allow me to continue to play the game for years to come...

I just did the mobility test for my hips and I’m probably getting 10 degrees on my lead leg (left leg for a right handed player) and my back pain is so much worse after a round of golf. Do you have any recommendations?

What about thoracic soreness? Feels like poor posture inline with shoulder blades.

Definitely a common issue with deadlifts and other hinge exercises. Most commonly occurs when the shoulder blades are not squeezed back enough (retracted). A good thought is to try and pinch your shoulders together or pinch the spine. Often times that'll fix thoracic issues in the hinge!

Great presentation! As a PTA for 30+ years, and a avid golfer the last 6 years. This information desperately needs to get out to the golfing community. After playing twice a week and hitting hundreds of balls a week I injured my lumbar spine. It has been a slow challenging 10 months of recovery. Several levels of lumbar dermatome patterns from L2-S1. L5-S1 is the last to go.

What if you have 3 bulging discs in your lower back and arthritis

Not sure if the arthritis is in your spine as well? As for the bulging discs, these are often a result of the lower back compensating for a lack of mobility somewhere else, most often the hips. If you restore mobility to the hips, it will likely reduce the stress on your lower back. How is deadlifting going to help back pain when that is literally compressing the discs in your spine. This is literally the opposite what my PTs have told me.

Thank you for your response Kasper. While there is measurable compression of the discs in your low back during a deadlift, this is not necessarily a bad thing! Our low backs are capable of adapting to the stresses we put on it. One example of a movement that causes a high compression of the lower back discs is, in fact, a golf swing! By building a stronger back in the gym, you can better prepare your low back for the stresses it encounters on the golf course. With all this being said, it is best to consult with your coach or PT about the appropriate starting point for the hip hinging motion to be able to perform a proper deadlift.
