This video saved me a lot of headaches and time. The flat sections on the bushings is easy to miss and the housing of the wormgear will not go back together unless the bushings are setting flush. Thanks again this was super helpful.

Good demo for the rebuild. With the impeller out…. I’d have done the impeller mod at the same time since it would have been easy. I did the impeller mod and now my blower never clogs with slush and it made a noticeable improvement in blowing the fluffy stuff. 😊

Great job! FYI, the reason there is an inside and outside hole for the wheel retaining pin is for those that do a lot of turning, the machine will operate as if it had an "open differential" and they won’t be fighting a “locked” drive axial as they try to make turns

Thank you for this awesome video on how to replace a broken gear box gear! My son-in-law's craftsman snow blower is only 1 year old and already have to deal with this kind of repair. But we have a gravel driveway so it's to be expected. So, I guess I have some work to do. I'm a retired auto mechanic, but by watching your video I'll GET-ER-DONE! Thanks again for part 1 and part 2 step by step repair! WELL, DONE! 😎👍🙏

Not going to lie I wish I had found your channel last year! I bought the exact machine and the guy before me has bolts in for the pins. Paid 150$ for it because the guy thought it was leaking gas out of the block but it turns out it was just a fuel line cracked and I thought I had won a little lottery but I guess I will see what happens when I get it running if the gear is pooched. I am hoping not! Great videos!

I have the same exact model Craftsman 9HP, 26", so this was a fantastic and invaluable video on rebuilding the gear box. I've learned so much and hopefully repaired my machine on my own. I was unable to join the 2 sides of the snowblower alone, until the augur lever was depressed, which I may not have done, if you hadn't explained that. There is one thing. After everything was back together and tested, I noticed the augur blades kept turning, even when the augur handle was not depressed? Is there something I missed? Thanks again, I'm definitely a subscriber!

Likely the cable for auger set with too much tension so the brake isn't engaging, or it's the belt that's too tight. Also check to make sure the idler return spring is still connected. If not, it won't pull back the idler pulley enough and the belt will stay slightly engaged.

Excellent 2 Part Video especially pointing out the significance of the flats in the housing in relationship to the bushing flats. Without that information someone might break a housing if they did not realize they had interference. Presently Stens offers FREE shipping on orders over $150 Cdn but you need to set up a prepaid (credit card) account with them.

Yes, install a pin on 1 wheel to the outside of the wheel to allow it to spin. Both wheels pinned to the axle drives both like pozi in old muscle cars, better traction but harder to turn

Yes like the old pozi traction on muscle cars, I find it better when it's locked, and the snow/ice makes it easy enough to turn the snowblower. These are quite small units anyway, and I find them easy to maneuver.

WOW, THANK YOU!!! What detail you provide. I just picked up a MTD 8x26" blower with a busted auger. Not ever done one before I'm waiting for the gear box. This is a 1994 blower, very well cared for. There is NO gasket between the two halves. Seems odd, but do you know if back then they were built that way? I was given a CUB CADET 28" blower, big hole in the block. For my limited knowledge all else appears good. I was looking to get a predator replacement engine, trying to keep cost down as much as possible. I want to give one away to help someone out. A friend has a TORO, tracked 3 stage. It has set outside for at least 3 years. The thing started right up, runs a little rough but runs. It probably doesn't have 4 hours on it. The linkages are messed up, due to setting out no doubt. It doesn't seem to go through the snow worth a crap, it blows and in forward gears goes fine but a wheeled unit seems to have a lot more balls than this does. How do the gearing work? Are they like a pressure on the pulley? Never owned a blower so have zero experience in this area. Again, I thank you for your knowledge, and for taking the time to produce such high end instruction!! Dave in Vermont, 100% off grid for 43 years and counting

An excellent video! Thank you very much! I do have a question however... In part two, when you're reassembling the gearbox, the worm gear is already covered with a white grease. What type of grease is the white grease and why why did you need to use it instead of just the STENS "00" that you used in the rest of it?

Some greases are incompatible with each other and can actually harden the mixture of greases or make them lose their viscosity. If it's all in the same housing I'd stick with the same type.

@@TheJaydub83 maybe the bushing are getting bound up? Worse case is you pull it apart for an inspection... Without me seeing it/feeling it rotate it's hard to say! They usually don't spin very fast, but if you can rotate it 360° without it binding up, there shouldn't be a big issue!

Hey great videos! While my machine was a different model it still helped me enough to get everything done in the correct manner and now it's working great. Just need snow to test it here in North East Pennsylvania. I do have one question I am using the OEM sheer pins which came with the machine when I purchased it new about 9 years ago. I broke my 1st one last season and my 2nd earlier this season then the next day the worm gear completely failed. Is this common or do you think the pins even though they are the correct ones per the manufacturer were to hard?
@EliminatorPerformance
@EliminatorPerformance 5 жыл бұрын
Good question, sometimes the shear pins can shear half way and still transfer some force into the gears in the gear box. Glad to hear things are back up and running! And yeah we don't have too much snow in southern Ontario either. Thanks for watching Green Man!

I tried to get both gears to mesh dry before I use 00 grease. The worm gear alone spins and fits. When I add the round gear things bind up. Is it a bad gear. Its new . The company is no longer on Amazon??? Did they make bad gears. I am frustrated as I got every part so clean.

A 75w90 cold weather oil should be fine if you can't get 00 grease, although any tractor store should be able to get 00 grease, maybe even a John Deere dealer.

@@EliminatorPerformance hello we’ll I finally bought some grease 90 weight small amount wasn’t sure if I needed a large amount. When I got home today I checked the Aguer housing by removing that Square bolt. And I stuck a Q- tip into it. The thick grease was at the beginning of the opening it was like a dark Yellow or mustard color. It was packed. I tried to add a bit. Which came back out. So I said ok and secured the bolt nut back. Eliminator what I having trouble now is with a few things, 1. Getting it to run, 2. Getting 1st. C n 2nd, gear. 3rd and reverse I got good. 3, adjustment or the 2st n 2nd gear. Big storm heading my way tonight into tomorrow. I was able to get my Mechanic fix the skid he put a piece of steel on bottom same size as the other one. The 622 Power Trhow 6 ho from the year 2000 sat for. 6 years with the gas on. That carburetor on the Tecumseh was caked with fuel and the bowl was not silver more like chocolate in color. I was able to clean it all out and put it back and cleaned the idle jet. Today it finally started after trying for ten minutes. It stall when I try to ideal the machine what do you suggest Thanks Bud. Any suggestions

Another carb clean is most likely needed if you didn't flush the tank and blow out the line, other than that, if it's adjustable carb, give it more fuel by unscrewing the bottom jet and the drive can be adjusted by either moving the rod further down, or further up, it should be threaded, think of it like a tie rod on a car

@@EliminatorPerformance Thanks, I have adjusted the rod earlier. Not a adjustable it’s a fixed jet. When blowing snow is the engine throttle on full speed or 3/4.

@@EliminatorPerformance how do I blow out the line? I do not have any air around. Also I did clean out the tank with a Turkey baster. I didn’t want to undo the lines. Eliminator can you tell me the size of the fuel line that goes on to the carburetor. Is it a standard size. Maybe I should just go to a shop and see what they have instead of my local hardware.

been searching multiple websites, and my manual for the proper shear pins for my 9hp 29" dual stage Craftsman. Can't find the proper part number ANYWHERE! What part number did you use in this video where you replaced the worm gear? Mine bent but didn't break :(

Does brass shavings in the housing indicate worn gear? The second stage spins powerfully but the first stage is anemic (almost like I could grab the first stage with my hand and stop it). The worm gear looks good and the brass gear has all the teeth with almost all of them the same height and looks similar to the new one in the video. Could they be worn down enough that a good positive meshing with the worm gear is not occurring? Also, there was a bent shear pin that I had to hammer out.
@EliminatorPerformance
@EliminatorPerformance 3 жыл бұрын
Yes most likely this is a sign of damage. If you have a bent shear pin, it means it didn't shear and transferred some of that force.
@scottWILSONvtbeekeeper

@@EliminatorPerformance Thanks, so essentially there was a meshing but not sufficient enough to maintain proper rotation.
@EliminatorPerformance
@EliminatorPerformance 3 жыл бұрын
Yes most likely. These augers spin incredibly fast so you have to have everything perfect. The worm gear is slightly dished to allow the worm shaft to rotate, usually the damage starts in the middle of the worm gear. Normally the worm shaft (hardened steel) doesn't get damaged, but sometimes I've had to take a file to them to clean them up

Great video. I have the same problem with my Craftsman 42" snowblower tractor attachment. Mod.no.486.248381. I've found a lot of gears but I can't seem to find a schematic for the part no. My shaft has a keyed bushing on it and the ID of my gear is 1.50/20 teeth. Do you have the information that I need. Thanks again
