Part 1
In today's video I'll be showing you how to fix an Auger Gear on a Craftsman 9/24 snow blower!
My friend said he would try to use it, but it just wouldn't throw snow, he said the 2nd stage would spin, but the 1st stage (Impellers) wouldn't.
In PART 1, I show you how to remove the 1st and 2nd stage auger from the auger housing, and how to disassemble the gearbox to access the worm gear inside of it!
Once we have everything disassembled, I show you how I go about ordering parts. Specifically, how to find the right parts, using your model number!
Once PART 2 is uploaded, you can watch that here: • How to Fix a Snowblowe...

As an ex Sears Tech, you need to replace all the bearings and clean off the rust and notice that the gear in the box was brass and the other steel this is done so that the brass gear is meant to wear out, but the owner put in the wrong shear bolts! You use Bentonite grease for the gear box only! Good luck!
@derekwilson4419
@derekwilson4419 Жыл бұрын
Just for "novice" DYI's those were bolts that were bent bolts not sheerpins at the start of video that he removed. The owner did a quick fix and never bought proper pins. Bolts are hardened steel and sheer pins are a soft brass material made to break off before damage to the gear. Always good to buy spare pins with purchase or to have on standby so this doesn't happen. Good job with the video, it will be helpful for lots of people.

Good video. My auger was spinning freely so I watched this and didn’t get the part about the shear pins early (was fast forwarding to where I could see video of the repair). After I took everything out and removed the left auger I saw it was just a busted shear pin (which worked as designed). Craftsman included a couple spare from when I purchased it and I still had that bag of leftover parts. Easy fix but I took way too much apart, all I needed to do was a 3 minute replacement of the shear pin. Learnt sumthin tho.

The easiest way to get the grease and bronze broken gear bits out of gear case is to put the parts in a container of boiling water. Let it sit 5 / 10 minutes and the grease will melt and then you can use a air blow nozzle to clean out the housing. Allot faster than trying to use brake cleaner and all it cost you was a couple of quarts of water.

You most likely installed the gear box upside down, unbolt it and rotate it 180 degrees Or, you have your auger blades on the wrong sides If the snow is pushing left and right, instead of towards the center, then it's the blades If the snow is being pushed farther out, like a sidewalk sweeper, then the gear box is probably upside down

What recommendations do you have for penatrating oil? I recently bought a used, older, Craftsman 8.5 - 26" blower that needs some TLC. Cleaned up the non adjustable carb and got it running but found out that the impeller had taken a good hit and 2 of the 4 impeller blades are slighty bent causing them to touch the backside of the housing. Got that problem taken care of but moving forward, I noticed that the auger blades are seized to the auger shaft. I retired and no longer have my welders, touches or access to a hydraulic press. Not in a hurrry to get it running for this winter but looking to find a product to help break down the rust bond between the shaft and auger blades this winter. One recommendation is a blend of ATF and acetone. What would you suggest? Thanks in advance, Mike
@EliminatorPerformance
@EliminatorPerformance 9 ай бұрын
Atf and acetone or atf and diesel fuel works great, I've unseized some cylinders doing that before. I also used Kroil and Thrust is good too.
@michaelbeckman1794
@michaelbeckman1794 9 ай бұрын
Thanks, used the ATF and acetone on one side. After 3 hours I was able to get it to start moving with the help of two pipe wrenches, one on the stub shaft and the other on the auger shaft so there is still hope. The auger gear box appears to operate smoothly but it only has a fill plug so will check that out after I get both auger blades off. Thanks for your great informative videos 👍

@@dougsfan9984 it surges because the idle circuit (low idle speed jet) is most likely clogged, or too small. Dude looks like you got lucky getting the pulley off, most of the time they need to be heated with an oxy acetylene torch to expand the ID of the pulley for removal. What kind of lubricant did you use ie: Liquid Wrench, PB Blaster etc. Feel sorry for your customer since the incorrect $2 shear pin will cost him $80+ for the gear plus your labour charges, an expensive mistake!

The ones like these with set screws seem to be easier. Not sure who made this machine (MTD?) but on my Murray 5/24 I am having a hard time getting the pulley off (it has the nut on the end of the shaft holding it on and a square key keeps it from turning on the shaft). I have been putting PB Blaster on it since Wednesday after another few days I will buy a puller and drill two holes in the pulley and also heat it up with a torch and try again.
